Toby Alderweireld leaving could solve Spurs’ biggest problem

[ad_pod ]

Toby Alderweireld’s departure from Tottenham Hotspur may well fix one of Mauricio Pochettino’s biggest problems at a stroke.

The Belgium international has a £25million release clause in his contract and doubts persist over  whether the defender will remain north London beyond the summer.

Indeed, Alderweireld has spent a total of four years in the capital and has emerged as a genuinely world-class centre-back.

But this season he has been at the centre of one of Pochettino’s biggest problems.

The Argentine has continually rotated between a back three and a back four throughout the campaign.

When playing the former, he has partnered Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez with Alderweireld. When using the latter, he has cycled through the three and has occasionally used Juan Foyth too.

It should be no surprise, then, that the uncertainty surrounding the defence has adversely affected the club.

This season, Spurs have conceded 34 goals in the Premier League in 31 games. In 2017-18, Spurs conceded 36 in 38 games. Indeed, they have not kept a clean sheet domestically since February in a 1-0 win over Newcastle.

Since then, Spurs have let in one against Leicester City and Arsenal, as well as two versus Burnley, Chelsea, Southampton and Liverpool.

Across the club’s last five games, they have played a back three, three times – in the 2-1 losses to Liverpool and Burnley and the 1-1 draw with Arsenal. In those games, Alderweireld, Vertonghen and Sanchez played together twice, but Alderweireld was not involved versus Burnley.

In the two games in which they used a back four, Alderweireld and Sanchez played together against Chelsea but the Belgian was replaced by Vertonghen against Southampton. Alderweireld was not even in the squad that day.

Last season, Spurs utilised a centre-back pairing of Sanchez and Vertonghen because of Alderweireld’s injury-riddled campaign.

The defender missed 23 Premier League games in a row through injury. In that time, Spurs lost just four times.

They beat the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea in that time period, and also recorded Champions League wins over Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund without Alderweireld on the pitch. Indeed, he sustained his injury against the Spanish giants and lasted a mere 24 minutes. When he was substituted, the two sides were level at 0-0. Spurs won 3-1.

Football FanCast quizzed Football.London’s Tottenham correspondent, Alasdair Gold, on this very issue.

He said: “Last year, Pochettino may have been weirdly helped, if that’s such a way of describing Toby Alderweireld’s injury, but Alderweireld’s injury meant he had to play Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez. They formed a very solid partnership and they knew what each other were doing and when it went to a back three, it was purely Eric Dier coming back into that back three. It was very settled.

“This year, he looks like a man who is thinking ‘I have to play Alderweireld, because he’s class’ but it’s now giving him an issue with Sanchez, who Pochettino absolutely adores, so he’s now got a thing of ‘I really want to play a back three but I can’t do it every match’ and it’s messy. You can see it in the goals conceded tally.”

Of course, much of the furore surrounding his future revolves around the asking price. Alderweireld is not a £25m defender; he is worth at least double that in the current transfer market.

And many believe that whichever club triggers the clause and acquires his signature will receive a genuine bargain. That may be true.

But, by the same token, Alderweireld departing will allow Pochettino to properly bed in a central defensive partnership that has already proved its worth in north London.

It is that rarest of things: A win-win situation.

Pundit View: Alasdair Gold tells Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen to step up vs Ajax

[ad_pod ]Football.London’s Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has called on Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli to step up and prove that they belong at this level in the Champions League semi-final first leg clash against Ajax on Tuesday.

What’s the situation?

Well, the north London outfit welcome the Eredivisie giants to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium looking to take an advantage ahead of the second leg in Amsterdam, but they will be without the injured Harry Kane and the suspended Son Heung-Min.

As a result there will be a bigger onus on both Eriksen’s and Alli’s shoulders to deliver for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, whether it be in terms of goals or assists.

Gold tweeted on Tuesday: “Massive night for Spurs and Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli in particular. Those two have the ability to sparkle on any stage and if they can bring their A game tonight then that should make all the difference for Spurs going forward. Time to show this is their level.”

Is he right?

He certainly is.

West Ham ruined Arsenal’s unbeaten record at the Emirates in 2007 and history repeated itself at the weekend. Spurs fans don’t take it well in the video below…

Neither player has been at their best this season in terms of consistent form, but they are two stars their teammates will be looking at to make a difference against Ajax.

Tottenham may not have such a great chance of reaching the Champions League final again, and they must take the opportunity rather than bottling it – something we have seen from them on many occasions previously.

In addition, Eriksen and Alli are two players that are yet to prove themselves at the very highest level by helping Spurs win trophies – now is their ideal chance to be an influential part of a team to do exactly that.

No thanks: West Ham fans do not want Gary Medel to arrive

[ad_pod ]

According to Super Haber, Gary Medel has agreed terms with West Ham United over a summer move to the London Stadium.

Medel will see his contract with Besiktas expire in the summer of 2020.

The 31-year-old has previous experience of Premier League football having turned out for Cardiff City during the 2013-14 campaign, before joining Italian giants Inter Milan.

And it appears that the midfielder is heading back to England’s top flight.

According to Super Haber, Medel has already agreed terms with West Ham, where he will link up with fellow Chilean Manuel Pellegrini.

However, it would be fair to say that the London club’s fans are not overly pleased with the news.

Indeed, it is expected that Medel will be on big wages if he moves to London and the West Ham supporters are struggling to make sense of the transfer.

Arsenal fans call for Joe Willock to replace Mohamed Elneny

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal fans on Twitter have been calling for Joe Willock to play over Mohamed Elneny after his impressive performances for the Under 23s this season.

Elneny had a shocking game against Everton as the Gunners were beaten 1-0 at Goodison Park and fans have been lobbying for Willock to take his place in the team.

Willock has made cameo appearances for the London club in the Europa League this season – the midfielder has made two appearances in the competition so far and even netted himself a goal against Vorskla Poltava.

The midfielder has also made appearances in the Checkatrade Trophy for Arsenal’s youth side where he netted three goals in two matches.

The 19-year-old was on the scoresheet again on Monday, this time for the Under 23s in the Premier League 2 as the Gunners comprehensively beat Derby 5-0.

Performances like this have seen fans of the London club on Twitter wanting to see Willock in the first team as a replacement for Elneny.

Newcastle fans react as Dave Kitson makes takeover revelation

[ad_pod ]

As reported by Chronicle Live, Dave Kitson has revealed Newcastle United will be sold before the season ends for between £300million-£400million, and Toon fans have understandably taken to Twitter to discuss the latest in a long list of potential takeovers.

The most recent of which was supposed to be by Peter Kenyon but of course, the deal never quite materialised.

Previously there was the Amanda Staveley saga – Mike Ashley and Staveley even met in a restaurant to discuss the potential takeover, all the while making sure the press spotted them together at every possible occasion. The British-born billionaire then failed to make any progress in negotiations and that was the end of that.

Now with the season approaching the end and Rafa Benitez’s future still up in the air, another takeover rumour has emerged which has caused sceptical Magpies fans to respond.

It’s fair to say that most have taken Kitson’s latest claim with a pinch of salt, questioning his credentials and one even pointing out that the former Reading striker’s comments came on April Fool’s Day. Here’s a look at what Newcastle fans have been saying on Twitter…

Newcastle fans desperate for Perez to return for Liverpool game

[ad_pod ]

Ayoze Perez scored his 12th goal of the season (11 in the Premier League) in the 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion at the AMEX Stadium on Saturday.

The Spaniard collected a knock-down from Salomon Rondon and hammered the ball into the roof of the net, but his celebration was muted as he was carrying a knock and soon after Rafael Benitez had to take him off.

The injury to the 25-year-old occurred after he had danced past a few Brghton players and then skipped over Shane Duffy but the Irishman caught him on the hip and Perez couldn’t continue.

The change spoiled Newcastle’s momentum and without their star man Brighton clawed their way back into the game and equalised through Pascal Gross.

Newcastle fans were quick to respond to Perez’s post-match tweet in hope that he will be fit, one fan said “get that hip sorted for Saturday bonny lad” and another added “get well soon Ayo.”

With a potentially title deciding match at St James’s Park on Saturday Newcastle will hope that Perez is fit so they can have a say.

The Chalkboard: Ross repeats same old Sunderland mistake

[ad_pod ]

Sunderland’s automatic promotion hopes died at Fleetwood Town’s Highbury Stadium on Tuesday, and Jack Ross made a fatal error that he keeps on repeating.

The Black Cats arrived to face Joey Barton’s Fleetwood knowing only a win would keep them in the race for automatic promotion.

And while Portsmouth helped out by losing to Peterborough, Ross’ side just couldn’t hold on to the lead earned by Lee Cattermole’s first-half goal.

The midfielder headed the visitors in front after half an hour, but Paddy Madden equalised in the second half before Ashley Eastham grabbed a stoppage time winner.

Sunderland’s performance in the second half was woeful compared to their display before the interval, and it was all down to a mistake that Ross just can’t seem to eradicate.

On the chalkboard

During the Checkatrade Trophy final, with the score at 1-0, Ross introduced Lynden Gooch and Max Power for Lewis Morgan and Will Grigg.

In doing so, the Scot invited more and more pressure onto his side until eventually they caved, and Pompey went on to win the match on penalties.

At Fleetwood on Tuesday, he made an almost identical error, bringing on Kazaiah Sterling and George Honeyman for Grigg and Chris Maguire. Or in other words, he brought on two players with far inferior end product, inviting the hosts to have a go without fear of being punished on the break.

Once again, the boss put his team under the cosh with negative changes, and it was actually Honeyman who gave the ball away leading to the winning goal.

The Black Cats have drawn a frankly ridiculous 19 out of 45 league games this campaign, and just one of those was goalless. Ross has no problem getting his side in front, but the young boss has absolutely no idea what to do once that happens.

The ex-St Mirren gaffer is only 42 and has just four seasons of managerial experience under his belt, but if he doesn’t develop his game management skills, the “Ross out” calls will only get louder.

His poor tactical switches, like often moving to a 4-4-2 with one-goal leads, and uninspiring substitutions have cost the club a trophy and automatic promotion this season – will they cost him his job as well?

Make a move: Liverpool fans tell club to ignore Dybala and sign Felix instead

[ad_pod ]

According to reports from Tuttosport via Football Italia, Juventus are prepared to sell Paulo Dybala this summer to fund a move for Benfica’s outstanding young attacker Joao Felix.

Felix has scored 16 times in 37 appearances for Benfica this season, with the 19-year-old becoming one of the most exciting teenagers in world football.

Dybala, on the other hand, is a real talent, but his numbers have not been great this term. Indeed, the Argentine has only managed five Serie A goals.

With the recent speculation in mind, a Liverpool fan account on Twitter posed the question – should the Reds attempt to sign Dybala?

However, the majority of the supporters have urged the club to forget about a deal for Dybala and attempt to sign Felix from Benfica instead.

Are the media letting Jurgen Klopp off lightly for his lack of silverware? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

It does appear that Felix will have offers from a whole host of European powerhouses in this summer’s transfer window.

Man United simply have to beat City to signing of full-back following latest update: Opinion

The tide has turned fully in Manchester over the last decade in footballing terms, with City now well cemented as the number one destination for incoming players.

Success in both the league and domestic cups has meant City hold the title of leading club in one of England’s biggest cities, and United will be desperate to get back to the level which saw them previously dominate the Premier League under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Both clubs are now in the market for similar players too, meaning their rivalry only gets another layer added to it, and with news emerging this weekend from the Daily Mail that Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a target for both clubs, it seems like they will be going head to head again.

However, we here in the Tavern feel that it is United who need to ensure they capture the Palace starlet, who has been in fine form since being given his chance by Roy Hodgson at Selhurst Park.

And while City have some superb talent and would be a good destination for Wan-Bissaka, it is United who need defensive recruitments, especially in the full-back areas, where Ashley Young and Mateo Darmian continue to lack the quality a club like United need.

In Wan-Bissaka, United would be getting a player who has bags of energy, pace and willing, and he’d be a brilliant long-term fit at Old Trafford.

City already have the likes of Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy who are going to take some displacing at their respective positions, while at United, Wan-Bissaka would be able to come straight in and make the position his own.

Either way, this is a player who Solskjaer needs to be going all out to get.
