    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Antony spent the latter half of the 2024-25 season on loan at the Benito Villamarin, scoring nine goals in 26 games across all competitions as Manuel Pellegrini's men earned a runners-up medal in the Conference League and a sixth-place finish to qualify for this season's Europa League. With Betis remaining hopeful of signing the former Ajax wonderkid, and no other teams showing serious interest, the Red Devils decided to sell Antony for a cut-price €25 million (£22m/$29m) fee. He joins Los Verdiblancos on a five-year deal, until 2030.

GOL CEDO DO GLORIOSO

PRESSÃO DO YPIRANGA

O jogo terminou 2 a 0.

After battling back from a serious knee injury in the 2023/24 season, he featured 27 times for the Blues last term, scoring three goals and providing two assists. But he was allowed to leave for AC Milan this summer in a £36 million ($49m) switch, having cost Chelsea £52m ($70m) in June 2023.

WHAT NKUNKU SAID

Nkunku told Tuttomercatoweb: "I think everything was perfect when I arrived, but then I got injured and was out for many months. I was really eager to return, and then I had another muscle problem. I was fine in my second year, but then the coach made other decisions. I’m still the same player who scored twice in Bergamo."

Chris Gayle: T20's biggest visionary and revolutionary

The man from Jamaica, who first turned chaotic T20 hitting into a science, continues to mould his batting to suit the circumstances – to brutal effect, as always

Sidharth Monga20-Apr-2018Junior Bennett, who coached Jamaica to five straight regional first-class titles without any experience of having played first-class cricket himself, loves to tell a story of Chris Gayle’s evolution as a batsman. Back when Gayle hadn’t yet made it, most people in Kingston would turn up, Bennett says, just to watch one shot. When the ball would be short of a length, even higher than the hip, Gayle would go back, get tall and punch it “down the road”.Now Gayle hardly plays that shot. Bennett has also spent time with Jamaica Tallawahs, once upon a time Gayle’s Caribbean Premier League team. In the nets Gayle sometimes still plays that shot, looks straight at Bennett, and says: “I still have it, coach.”Yet Gayle knows the shot gets you only one or two runs in limited-overs cricket once the field spreads out. And Gayle was the first one to actually teach us that the first casualty of Twenty20 cricket was the importance of the single. So now when you pitch short of a length to Gayle, you will find he has his front leg out of the way and, depending on the width available, he either slogs over midwicket or goes over extra cover.Gayle is the biggest visionary, and revolutionary, of the T20 era. He turned chaotic hitting into a science, converting slow risk-free starts into big hundreds, picking his targets within the opposition ruthlessly. His batting laughs at commentators who say taking a single just after hitting a six is “intelligent”. For if he had batted “intelligently”, he wouldn’t have registered a six every nine balls. He has hit 10 sixes or more in an innings on 16 occasions, which is eight times the next men on the list. He has 21 T20 centuries, three times the next best. He has hit 100 more IPL sixes than anybody else.Off the field Gayle has led the freelance revolution. He was among the first to risk the traditional international career in order to keep playing T20 cricket for different franchises. Mind that the national and regional boards could still make or break careers. Gayle took them on. He honed his T20 game so much no league could afford to not have him.Sometimes lack of self-awareness brings great revolutionaries down, but Gayle is probably the most self-aware T20 batsman. He has reinvented himself again and again. He was supposed to be done in 2011 when he was at loggerheads with his own board and when no IPL team bid for him. He came in as an injury replacement and changed the landscape of IPL. Last year you thought he was done for good. The back, the knee, the low scores. Even Royal Challengers Bangalore – how much Virat Kohli loved him – gave up on him at this year’s auction. No team asked for him on the first day of the auction.ESPNcricinfoYet here he is, seven years since the IPL first rejected him, consigning the best T20 bowler right now to his worst figures, helping his side score 190 against a team that had conceded 150 in only one of their last seven games. Virender Sehwag, another visionary who revolutionised Test opening, has indeed saved the IPL, as Gayle joked during the post-match presentation. The Kings XI Punjab mentor first bought Gayle at the reserve price, then asked him to spend as much time as he could with a yoga guru and a masseur. Two guys who make a smaller deal of their genius you will struggle to find.Even in his latest century, Gayle displayed evolution and revolution. Time waits for no one, he admitted later. He realises he can’t probably make those dramatic accelerations after slow starts, so he is taking more risks at the start. In his previous match, the first ball he faced was from his nemesis, Harbhajan Singh. Gayle of old would have tried to see him off, bide his time and then take off. Here he hit the first ball for four. In the IPLs after that 2011 comeback, Gayle’s Powerplay strike rate has ranged between 6.72 and 9.2. This year he has been going at two runs a ball in the Powerplay, taking those risks early. The dot-ball count is coming down too; this innings featured the least dot balls he has faced in an IPL hundred, third-lowest in all his T20 centuries. Part of bringing that count down was Gayle running four twos, another thing he is not usually known for. “I did some running today,” he said with a laugh in a post-match interview with the IPL website. “It’s a big outfield and you can’t hit every ball for six, hopefully tomorrow the body will actually feel a bit better [than just after the game], so much running… I thought it was going to be a bit difficult. But at the same time it was calculated, that innings, that kind of play, that’s how I do it. You got to run sometimes, eh? Can’t walk all your life! I’m happy, everything was calculated well, and I got a hundred.” At the twilight of his career, Gayle is becoming more efficient in the traditional sense of the word.

“[Rashid] is a key bowler, he has been bowling phenomenally well in this IPL, but I just wanted to put him under a bit of pressure, let him know the Universe Boss is here”Chris Gayle

He might talk of himself in third person, but Gayle the batsman has the humility to acknowledge he needs to find ways to keep scoring the big runs or there will be no place for him in the freelance world. And, in scoring this hundred, Gayle might have once again shown the world the way.Rashid Khan is a bowler so good his four overs are almost a write-off. You take a run a ball off him without giving him a wicket, and you consider yourself successful. Against him, Gayle scored 24 off four successive balls. Play him like an offspinner, was the message. Go over the leg side only if he bowls a bad ball – half-volley, full toss or a long hop. It might not always come off, but this could be the answer against Rashid. And, Gayle said, it showed him who’s boss: “He is a key bowler, he has been bowling phenomenally well in this IPL, but I just wanted to put him under a bit of pressure, let him know the Universe Boss is here. Just one of those things, let bowlers know who’s in charge.”There is another story that Junior Bennett likes to tell. After a training session during an Under-19 tournament in Trinidad, Gayle told Bennett, “Coachman, I have 35 centuries now.” He had been counting from elementary school, primary school, even backyard cricket. “Every level of cricket I play, I score a hundred,” Gayle said. These were the words Bennett remembered when Gayle kickstarted the inaugural World T20 with the first T20I hundred of all. His 21st has come on a day that a new format – the English H100 – has been announced. There is a new level, Chris. Lead us into it before you go. We are not betting against you getting the first hundred in H100.

Du Plessis satisfies his needs, Elgar fulfils his wants

Du Plessis was coming off low scores which is why he needed the hundred more than he wanted it. Elgar didn’t need a hundred because he already scored a big one in this series but he still might have wanted it

Firdose Moonda in Johannesburg02-Apr-2018Faf du Plessis needed a hundred. He didn’t want it, he needed it.After coming back from a broken finger to captain South Africa in this series, with no game time and a month on the sidelines, du Plessis insisted he was mentally ready for the challenge but the numbers said otherwise. He averaged 11 from the first three Tests and was plucked for a first-ball duck in the first innings here at the Wanderers. He needed a hundred. And the situation was such that he could get one. Du Plessis came in to bat late on the third afternoon, with his team well ahead and the pressure pretty much completely off. For du Plessis, whose team does not need to win this game to clinch the series, the consideration was a runs versus time equation. How much time did he need to give his attack – of which only the spinner was fully fit – to bowl Australia out? And how many runs did he need to be absolutely sure Australia could not reach the target in that time? And maybe he would have thought of how many runs he might be able to score as well.Especially when he was hit on the same finger that broke in February. Twice.Chadd Sayers struck du Plessis on that finger on the third evening, when a length ball reared up to miss the flick and du Plessis chucked the bat away in surprise. Five balls later, he hit Sayers over his head for four and three balls after that, pulled him in front of square for four more. But the real test came on the fourth morning, when Pat Cummins, bowling substantially quicker than Sayers, got one to lift and find the same finger. When du Plessis removed his glove, his finger was swollen and bloodied. He required lengthy on-field treatment and the reapplication of the protective padding he has had around his finger for the most of the series, that he went without in this innings until there was no choice. Some other player – one who knew he didn’t actually need to bat on or one who might be thinking about an injured finger and an IPL contract – might have walked off the field at the moment. Not du Plessis.”That would have motivated him more, made him hungrier to stay out there and fight through the pain. That’s his character when he’s batting,” Dean Elgar, who was at the other end said. “It was not nice for him to get hit on that finger twice. Once you’ve hurt something, you seem to keep hurting it if you don’t have time off from the game. It was nice to see him solider on, that’s what leaders do and I never expected him to do anything else.”Du Plessis was on 43 off 91 balls when he was hit. He went on to score 57 runs off his next 72 balls, including powerful sweeps one of which went for six off the top-edge, extravagant shots down the ground and an outside edge to bring up his eighth Test hundred and provide reassurance over his form.Du Plessis has made a habit out of getting to a point where questions are starting to sprout about his form and then he answers with a big score. In Australia 18 months ago, he came back from scores of 37, 32 and 7 in the first two Tests, and a conviction of ball-tampering, to score an unbeaten 118 in the day-night Test in Adelaide.Since then, he only has one other triple-figure score from five series to his name before Monday: 135* against a hapless Bangladesh at the start of this home summer.Having the captain contributing always makes a difference, which is why du Plessis needed the hundred more than he wanted it. “When he is playing well and the rest of our batting unit is playing well, I am smiling,” Elgar said. “Test cricket is such a ruthless environment that when you are out of form it can chip away at you and it can put you in a dark place. But you are only ever one knock from being back in form, that’s the funny thing about professional cricket. He showed a lot of toughness and grit. He’s the happiest out of anyone in our changeroom.”Dean Elgar launches one on the up•AFPElgar didn’t need a hundred because he already has a big one in this series but he still might have wanted it.He has, after all, seen more balls than anyone else in this series, so if anyone should have more runs, it is him. In four Tests, Elgar has faced 858 balls, over 100 more than his nearest competitor Aiden Markram (754) and more than twice what the nearest Australian, Tim Paine (426 balls) has seen. There is no greater proof of Elgar’s patience and resolve than his statistics from his half-century in the second innings at the Wanderers. The fifty came up in 199 balls, a strike rate of a shave over 25%, but of those 180 were dot balls. Elgar played just 19 scoring shots in his half-century.He finished with 81 runs from 250 balls, with 215 dot balls and only 35 scoring shots. To show that much restraint for more than five-and-half hours takes discipline and fine temperament. Elgar has proved over the course of the last year that he is stubborn and strong-willed, two of the qualities every opener needs, and he showed them here.”With so much time left in the game I knew that was ultimately my job to try and anchor the innings. I think it was important for someone to drive it home by spending some time at the crease,” Elgar said. “It comes down to trying to nail the basics of batting and just trying to be hungry out there and a lot of discipline with regards to defence.”Most pleasing for Elgar was the way he dealt with Nathan Lyon, who bowled 135 balls to Elgar and dismissed him. Elgar scored 24 runs off Lyon and though he conceded Lyon had “the edge” over him, he described the contest between them as “brilliant.””Facing Nathan Lyon bowling at 96 kph on a wicket that is very unfamiliar to Wanderers wasn’t very easy,” Elgar stated. “Strike rotation was quite tough and I just had to adopt a very simple gameplan. I thought if my defence was very good against him I could negate most of the balls that he threw my way and I knew that the right-handers would be able to score off him. I can’t wait for the next one. It’s a battle between two guys who are highly competitive. He has had the edge over me but I know he has also bowled a hell of a lot of balls at me and I’ve frustrated him. He’s someone I know I’ll have a beer with afterwards.”So Elgar didn’t get the hundred he wanted but he did get something else. He took his 50th Test catch to end the Australian innings, diving full length after running back from mid-off and though the scorecard won’t show it, it’s Elgar’s moment of the last month. “The catch is the highlight of the series for me. Leave the runs, those catches never happen. I thought, ‘Just catch it because the bowlers are hurting. They don’t want to bowl anymore’. The ball got away from me a little bit towards the end and I had to put in a big dive. The rest is history.”And soon, the series will be too and in all likelihood it will end with South Africa making history – with a first series win over Australia since readmission – and with du Plessis and Elgar getting what they want and what they need.

Hardik Pandya was dismissed in debatable circumstances in the first ODI against New Zealand in Hyderabad, with the third umpire deciding he had been bowled even though it might have been the wicketkeeper’s glove that dislodged the bails. The dismissal occurred in the 40th over of India’s innings, when Hardik tried to dab a delivery from Daryl Mitchell to deep third but checked his shot at the last moment. The off bail was dislodged as the ball passed extremely close to the stumps and the decision was referred by the on-field umpire to the TV umpire K Ananthapadmanabhan.Replays showed that wicketkeeper Tom Latham, who was standing up to the stumps, also had his gloves very close to the bails; the bails seemed to light up a fraction after the ball had passed over the top of the stumps and into Latham’s gloves.

The TV umpire checked whether Latham’s gloves were behind the stumps before he collected the ball – which they were, so it was a legal delivery – and he was satisfied that there was no conclusive evidence that the bail had been dislodged by the wicketkeeper’s gloves.Ravi Shastri, who was on commentary at the time, wasn’t convinced. “Oh, it’s been given out! Daryl Mitchell should be happy,” Shastri said. “Should really be happy, because that, if you take a look again as to where the keeper’s gloves are, where the ball is as it passes the stumps, it looked as if the ball was at least an inch, inch-and-a-half above the stumps … Ball clearly looks to be above the bail. You can see as it goes past into the gloves, there’s no red light, it’s only after that. There you go. From that angle, you can see that the gloves are closer to the bails than the ball.”Watch full replay in the UK and USA

Hardik was dismissed for 28 off 38 balls, ending a partnership of 74 for the fifth wicket with Shubman Gill, who went on to score his maiden double-century in ODIs and lead India to a total of 349 for 8.”As a non-striker, there’s a blind spot; you can’t really tell like what happened,” Gill said at the post-match press conference. “When I was watching the replay, I didn’t think the ball hit the stumps. It’s a bit weird that the ball is hitting the bail and the bail is falling towards the crease instead of the other side but these bails are different. These are heavy bails, and these stumps are different. At the end of the day, you have to go with the third umpire and respect his decision.”
