Netherlands vs Nepal – the one match neither team can afford to lose

Both teams have exciting cricketers, their head-to-head record is almost dead even, and with higher-ranked teams in their group, this is a game they can’t lose

Dallas, 10.30am localBig picture – Netherlands favourites, but only justThere are two obvious groups of death in this T20 World Cup, and Group D is one of them. Netherlands and Nepal are the two lowest-ranked sides in the group, but one of them comes into the tournament with serious pedigree in punching well above their weight at World Cups.Remember this? And this? And this? And more recently, over the last two years, this, and this? Before they can try and pull off results of that nature against South Africa, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, however, Netherlands will have to get past the one team they are favourites against. And it won’t be easy.Related

Netherlands have a 6-5 T20I record against Nepal overall, and their six meetings in the pandemic and post-pandemic eras have been dead even. They met three times earlier this year, in a triangular tournament in Kirtipur, and won once apiece in the league stage before Netherlands won a closely fought final.Netherlands may have been here and done it before, while Nepal have only featured in one previous T20 World Cup, but the results they achieved in that tournament – in 2014, when they beat Afghanistan and fell short of a Super 10s spot only by virtue of net run-rate – should tell you that this could be a seriously tight contest.Form guideNetherlands LLLWW

The South Africa-born Levitt has scored 349 runs in eight T20I innings so far, at an average of 43.62 and a strike rate of 156.50. He made Netherlands’ highest T20I score in only his second T20I, smashing 135 off just 62 balls against Namibia, and he comes into this tournament with form behind him too, scoring a 28-ball 55 in the warm-up victory over Sri Lanka. You probably remember him for scoring the fastest T20I fifty, off just nine balls, against Mongolia during last year’s Asian Games, but Dipendra Singh Airee, Nepal’s highest run-getter in T20Is, has shown his quality against higher-ranked teams too. Netherlands know what he’s capable of; earlier this year, Nepal were six down against them in Kirtipur, needing 57 off 24 balls, when Airee went ballistic. His 34-ball 63 took Nepal to the doorstep of victory, before Roelof van der Merwe bowled him with four runs needed off three balls and Netherlands sealed a two-run win.Team newsSince Levitt’s emergence, Vikramjit Singh has dropped out of Netherlands’ first-choice opening combination. Sagar Dhakal was one of only two Nepal bowlers to complete their four-over quota in their warm-up game against Canada. It suggests that Nepal may be mulling starting the 22-year-old against Netherlands, if they decide to go with two left-arm spinners.Nepal (probable): 1 Kushal Bhurtel, 2 Aasif Sheikh (wk), 3 Anil Sah, 4 Kushal Malla, 5 Rohit Paudel (capt), 6 Dipendra Singh Airee, 7 Gulsan Jha, 8 Sompal Kami, 9 Karan KC, 10 Lalit Rajbanshi, 11 Abinash Bohara/Sagar Dhakal0:50

Which team is the likeliest to be upset?

Pitch and conditionsDallas was where this World Cup got underway, and it got underway with a bang, as USA chased down 195 with 14 balls remaining. Twenty-one sixes were hit in that game, ten coming off the blade of Aaron Jones, who smashed an unbeaten, match-winning 94 off 40 balls. Prepare for more big hitting if the conditions remain similar. The threat of rain hangs over the match, though, with Dallas experiencing stormy weather in the lead-up, and there’s a 20% chance of precipitation forecast for Tuesday.Stats and trivia Sompal Kami is the only survivor from Nepal’s last appearance at the T20 World Cup in 2014. The seam-bowling allrounder, who was 18 at the time, made his T20I debut in that tournament, picking up 2 for 13 in an 80-run win over Hong Kong In the same match where Airee broke the record for fastest T20I fifty, Kushal Malla scored a 34-ball century, which at that time was a T20I record too. That record has since been broken, with Nepal at the receiving end as Namibia’s Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton tonked a 34-ball ton against them in February Malla (167.24) has the fourth-highest T20I strike rate among all batters with at least 500 runs in the format. Of batters from teams featuring in this tournament, only Suryakumar Yadav (171.55) is ahead of him Logan van Beek is playing his fifth T20 World Cup, having previously featured in 2014, 2016, 2021 and 2022.Quotes”We know the Nepal team quite well because we’ve played against them recently. But we’ve also played against South Africa, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka very recently as well … in the 50-over World Cup and in the qualifiers. So really looking forward to our group and I’m sure there’ll be a lot of jostling within the group.”

Gianluigi Donnarumma's agent threatens legal action against PSG after Luis Enrique's decision to cast aside Champions League-winning goalkeeper

Gianluigi Donnarumma's agent has threatened legal action against PSG after the goalkeeper was dropped from the squad by manager Luis Enrique.

Goalkeeper dropped for Super CupDonnarumma upset by decisionAgent hits out at PSGFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The PSG stopper looks destined to leave the club this summer after being dropped from the squad for the Super Cup clash with Tottenham. Manager Luis Enrique has taken responsibility for the decision and said he wants a "different profile" in goal, but the decision has not gone down well with the Italy international. Donnarumma has issued a furious statement, saying he's "disappointed and disheartened," and his agent, Enzo Raiola, has now spoken out about the situation.

AdvertisementWHAT DONNARUMMA'S AGENT SAID

Raiola told Sky Italia: “We are shocked by PSG. There’s zero respect by the club after four years together. PSG had made various demands. In the end, we accepted an offer lower than Gigio's current salary because he wanted to stay. Then they changed the rules, and at that point, we broke off negotiations to meet again after the Champions League final. We met again before the Club World Cup, and they confirmed their willingness to continue. We didn't expect what happened in the last ten days.

"I understand the need to buy a new goalkeeper, but dismissing Gigio after everything he's done for the club is a huge lack of respect that I will assess with my lawyers. Beyond the fact that it was the coach who made this decision, he also works for the club, and my lawyers and I want to better understand their position.

"A month ago, we were talking about renewing his contract, it's strange that in a month, the coach changed his mind about Gigio as a player. This is what saddens me the most and makes me think that in the end, it was better not to renew his contract."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lucas Chevalier looks set to replace Donnarumma after being brought in from Lille, while the Italian could now head to the Premier League. Manchester City and Manchester United have both been linked, and his agent added that a move to England could be on the cards.

He said: "Perhaps only in the Premier League can they satisfy the club's exaggerated financial demands. They talk about respect, but at this point perhaps the respect is only financial. It's not about abandoning a project and finding the best for Gigio. Even from an image perspective, we need to take our positions to understand how to deal with the club."

Manchester City are thought to have initiated talks with Donnarumma over a transfer but any move will be dependent on Ederson being offloaded. However, the Italian goalkeeper certainly appears destined to move on just months after winning the Champions League with Luis Enrique's all-conquering PSG side.

Inter Miami player ratings vs LA Galaxy: Lionel Messi bails out uninspiring Herons with late goal and assist in return from injury

It was an uninspiring performance, but Messi magic bailed out club late as Miami take three points

Lionel Messi returned from injury to play hero in an otherwise flat Inter Miami performance, lifting his team to a 3-1 win over the LA Galaxy on Saturday after missing two matches with a right hamstring issue.

Miami looked uninspired for much of the night, but late goals from Messi and Luis Suárez in the 84th and 89th minutes, respectively, secured three points after the reigning MLS Cup champions had held firm for 83 minutes.

Messi entered at halftime with Miami up 1-0 thanks to Jordi Alba’s strike just before the break. The Galaxy equalized 15 minutes into the second half when winger Joseph Paintsil sliced through two defenders and beat goalkeeper Oscar Ustari at the near post.

After a tense 20-minute spell, Messi produced a moment of brilliance, weaving through defenders before finishing with his trademark left foot to restore Miami’s lead. The Herons rode that momentum to the finish, capped by Suárez’s late dagger – set up, fittingly, by Messi.

The Uruguayan forward found the back of the net from open play for the first time in 12 matches, while Messi earned his 10th assist of the regular season. His strike, meanwhile, was his 19th of the season, which puts him in the lead of the MLS Golden Boot race.

With the season winding down, it was a crucial three points for Miami in the race for the MLS Supporters' Shield and their standing for the postseason. It was a solid response from a squad who were coming off a 4-1 battering at the hands of Orlando City.

Now, with Messi back in the mix, the Herons will look to work their way up the standings in the East. With their win, they end the weekend in fourth place, six points back from conference-leading Philadelphia Union, while having three matches in hand.

    Goalkeeper & Defense

    Oscar Ustari (5/10):

He will want the goal conceded to Paintsil back. Poor, poor goalkeeping on the Galaxy's opener – just inexcusable.

    Jordi Alba (9/10):

Tremendous run and finish for Miami's opening goal, and a superb defensive performance to pair with it. Top showing.

    Maxi Falcon (6/10):

Was solid under pressure, and gave Ustari a passing outlet out of the back. A good performance overall with no real errors.

    Gonzalo Lujan (7/10):

Solid next to Falcon, and particularly impressive in 1v1 moments. Solid.

    Marcelo Weigandt (6/10):

Wasn't particularly noticeable, which isn't a bad thing. Quietly did his job and was composed under pressure against a talented Galaxy attack.

    Midfield

    Sergio Busquets (7/10):

So composed in the middle of the park. Quietly pulled the strings and controlled the tempo all evening long. A good showing from the veteran.

    Benjamin Cremaschi (6/10):

Earned a rare start, but was played deeper than usual, limiting his ability to go forward. Still, a solid performance overall, and he looked better once De Paul entered the fray.

  • Attack

    Fafa Piault (5/10):

Provided width and pace off the ball, but not much else. Wasted opportunity to make an impression.

    Luis Suarez (7/10):

So smart in the final third. Made some brilliant runs and finally got his goal in the 89th minute. A top performance.

    Telasco Segovia (5/10):

Had a nice finish in the first half, but the goal was called back for offside. Otherwise, rather ineffective.

    Tadeo Allende (4/10):

A complete ghost. Hooked at halftime.

    Subs & Manager

    Lionel Messi (7/10):

Made his return from injury midway through the match and was rather ineffective until his late winner – but hey, a goal is a goal, and it was one heck of a finish.

    Rodrigo De Paul (6/10):

Gave Miami a much-needed midfield presence in the second half, allowing Cremaschi to climb higher. Solid showing.

    Baltasar Rodriguez (N/A):

Replaced Picault late, was lively in moments.

    Yannick Bright (N/A):

Brought on for Cremaschi with 13 minutes to spare.

    Javier Mascherano (4/10):

Miami were flat from start to finish and that falls on Mascherano. The attack lacked cohesion, with players often out of position and little rhythm going forward. Against one of the league’s worst teams, it was simply a poor performance. Messi’s return to fitness is a silver lining, capped by a great goal – but it came out of nothing, which underscores the problem. The Argentine manager will need to go back to the drawing board as the Herons would have lost against a better team with this showing.

    TELL ME MORE

Wrexham beat Preston North End 3-2 to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening, thanks to Kieffer Moore's last-minute winner.

Within six minutes, Preston had the lead, as Lewis Dobbin, on his debut, curled a brilliant effort into the top corner to give the hosts a richly-deserved early advantage.  But Wrexham levelled just four minutes later through Ryan Hardie, who collected the ball in the area, swivelled, and found the top corner from a remarkably tight angle, restoring parity in sensational style.

Liam Lindsay, though, gave Preston their lead back with a close-range header from a fine Alfie Devine corner delivery. And Preston should have had a third on the stroke of half-time, but Daniel Jebbison's chipped effort over an onrushing Arthur Okonkwo hit the post, instead of the corner of the net.

That miss proved decisive, as 19-year-old Harry Ashfield equalised for Wrexham just before the hour mark, taking aim for range and seeing his effort deflected beyond goalkeeper Jack Walton.

Wrexham grew into the game throughout the second half and exerted a great deal of pressure in an attempt to find a winner. And it came in bizarre circumstances in the 91st minute, as substitute Moore finished after Walton made a horrendous mistake, dropping a cross, and allowing the Welsh striker to pass the ball into an empty net.  A breathless end to a breathless game.

  • THE MVP

Hardie scored a sensational goal, and with it, gave fans a glimpse of true Premier League quality. His swivel and finish was remarkable, and he continued to press and harry the Preston backline as much as he could thereafter.

    THE BIG LOSER

Oh dear, Walton. He couldn't do much about Wrexham's first two goals but the third was all on him. A cross looped into the box and he absolutely failed to do his job, as he saw the ball slip through his hands and drop at Moore's feet. Such is the life of a goalkeeper.

However, Atalanta must first sell Marco Brescianini to Napoli before completing a move for Musah, and with Milan already searching for a replacement, the American's deal could spark a domino effect across Serie A.

According to , Milan are considering a late swoop for Barcelona defender Christensen as they look to strengthen their backline before the transfer window shuts. The Dane, who joined Barca from Chelsea on a free transfer in 2022, still has one year left on his contract, but the Catalan giants are open to player sales this summer. Christensen has emerged as a concrete option for Milan after their 2-1 home defeat to Cremonese exposed key defensive weaknesses.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Barcelona have already lost Inigo Martinez to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, and while they retain options such as Ronald Araujo, Pau Cubarsi, Jules Kounde, and Eric Garcia, head coach Hansi Flick is reluctant to sanction another departure in a packed season.

Milan’s interest in Christensen comes at a crucial moment, with the Rossoneri under pressure to recover quickly from their opening-day loss. Strengthening their defence has become a priority, and Christensen’s experience in La Liga and the Premier League makes him a valuable target. Alongside the adane international, Milan are also monitoring Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji as part of their late recruitment drive. For Barca, any sale could provide financial relief, but Flick’s need for depth means a transfer would risk leaving the squad short in central defence.

The 29-year-old has been a reliable figure for Barca, earning respect in the dressing room for his professionalism and versatility and even filling in midfield roles under Xavi in the past.
