Harry Maguire issues 'no excuses' warning to Man Utd team-mates after getting a 'lot better' acquainted with Ruben Amorim's system during 'tough' pre-season

Harry Maguire has warned his Manchester United team-mates that there can be "no excuses" heading into the 2025-26 campaign after a strong pre-season under Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils fell to a shocking 15th-place finish in the Premier League last term, their lowest position in over half a century, marking one of the darkest chapters in the club’s storied history.

  • Maguire says United must deliver

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

For the first time in years, United will be completely absent from European football after their painful Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao back in May. Without continental competition on the calendar, their fixture count could drop significantly. Should they exit early from the League Cup or FA Cup, the team could even end up playing only 40 matches over the course of the campaign.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The reduced workload puts an even greater emphasis on excelling in the Premier League, which now becomes the club’s undisputed priority. United’s top brass have made it clear that a return to European football by the 2026-27 season is non-negotiable. For that, the team must perform well domestically to earn a place among the continent’s elite.

  • WHAT MAGUIRE SAID

Maguire, who has featured sparingly in pre-season preparations, starting just one of the club’s opening four summer friendlies, is fully aware of the significance of this season. Speaking to , the centre-back emphasised the need for accountability and unity as the club seeks redemption.

"I just want to be part of a successful team this season," Maguire said. "I think last season was a tough season for everyone individually, but also as a team, as a squad, as a club. This season, there are no excuses. We're going to have a lot of time to prepare for the Premier League games, and we've got to make sure we're ready. So, for myself, it's making sure I'm available, I'm fit, I'm ready to go, and give everything I can to this team and this club."

United have had a gruelling pre-season under Amorim, and Maguire believes that the Portuguese manager has built a strong tactical foundation for the upcoming season.

"It's something that [Ruben Amorim] reiterated, that we didn't have enough time on the training pitch," Maguire continued. "This pre-season, it's been tough on the legs, but the majority of it has been tactical. So, it's nice to do the drills that are tactical rather than running around poles and running around the pitch.

"It's been an enjoyable pre-season, but a pre-season that we've all learnt from. We know the system a lot better, and we've just got to take that into the games now."

Gilberto Mora, 16, has stolen the spotlight with his recent performances for the Mexican national team and Tijuana’s Xolos. He’s quickly becoming one of Mexican football’s rising stars – but this week, he found himself at the center of a prank that went viral.

A few days ago, a video circulated showing a fan asking Mora for his jersey after Xolos’ 5-2 loss to LA Galaxy in the Leagues Cup, a match in which Mora scored both goals for his side. Mora responded by saying he couldn’t give it away because Marco Reus, who now plays for the Galaxy,  had asked to swap shirts. The clip sparked excitement among fans, who were impressed that a legend like Reus – former Borussia Dortmund and German national team star – would recognize a young talent like Mora.

But the story took a turn. In a press conference, Mora clarified that it had all been a joke.

“It was just a prank from my teammates,” Mora admitted. “They told me he wanted to swap with me, and I believed them. They even showed me the shirt. But in the end, he gave it to another teammate.”

Du Plessis, bowlers seal see-saw win for Royal Challengers Bengaluru

RCB lost six wickets for only 25 runs in the chase after a strong start, but Karthik and Swapnil counterpunched to complete the win

Rapid Fire – What made RCB’s quicks so effective in Bengaluru?

Four overs of craziness aside, Royal Challengers Bengaluru played the near-perfect game at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to roll Gujarat Titans over for the second time in a week.Riding on the back of their seam-bowling success and a blistering opening stand between Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli, RCB dominated for the first 26 overs of the game. But a middle-order collapse – where GT picked up six wickets for only 25 runs – briefly put them on the back foot. However, Dinesh Karthik (21*) and Swapnil Singh (15*) counterpunched to complete a four-wicket win.RCB’s victory with 38 balls to spare also takes them from tenth to seventh on the points table. They are on eighth points, as are ninth-placed GT, with both sides holding slim chances to make the playoffs.RCB make use of conditionsPitch number eight was the same surface on which Sunrisers Hyderabad pumped 287. But Saturday’s version of the pitch was different, courtesy the few hours of rain on Friday that made the pitch sweat overnight.Mohammed Siraj and Yash Dayal utilised that little assistance to move the ball in both directions in the powerplay, and found success with balls from behind a good length. Siraj dismissed Wriddhiman Saha for the fourth time in six innings and then had Shubman Gill playing away from his body for a catch at deep point. Sai Sudharsan also failed to get going, and GT could post only 23 for 3 in the powerplay, their lowest score of all time in that phase.M Shahrukh Khan, David Miller and Rahul Tewatia then scored in the thirties to keep the GT innings moving. Despite the occasional boundaries, the RCB seamers did not let them get away.Vijaykumar Vyshak pushed them back with short balls, as did Cameron Green, and helped by an electrifying fielding effort, the bowlers’ combined pressure soon brought about a lower-order collapse. GT slid from 131 for 5 to 147 all out, and their innings had two run-outs including a Kohli direct-hit dismissal of Shahrukh.Du Plessis, Kohli dazzleAfter surviving a close run-out chance on the first ball of the chase, Kohli brushed off all jitters by hitting Mohit Sharma for a six over cover and one more over midwicket in the opening over. Du Plessis then took Josh Little for 20 runs in the next over and RCB were off.1:46

Was that the best du Plessis knock of IPL 2024?

Du Plessis also took on IPL debutant Manav Suthar and Mohit, and the team fifty was brought up in just 3.1 overs. Kohli then pounced on Suthar for consecutive sixes over long-on. The onslaught continued as du Plessis then reached his fifty off 18 balls as RCB went past their previous-best powerplay score of 88. By the time he was dismissed in the sixth over by Little, RCB had already razed 92 off the target.Karthik, Swapnil douse fireFrom then on, however, wickets started to fall. RCB were probably looking to finish the game quickly to give their slim playoff qualification chances an NRR boost, but their batters fell trying to go after GT’s bowlers. Will Jacks fell to Noor Ahmad’s spin while Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell and Green were all dismissed by Little’s short balls. When Noor’s googly had Kohli edging behind for 42 in the 11th over, RCB had stuttered to 117 for 6.With four overs of Rashid left – he didn’t bowl earlier due to a blow to his shoulder while batting – GT searched for a seventh wicket to put in the ultimate squeeze, but Dinesh Karthik did not let the spinner settle by clubbing three fours in his opening over to give the Chinnaswamy crowd their voice again. When Rashid returned for his second over, Swapnil gave him the same treatment, hitting a six over the bowler’s head to secure the two points.

'This is such a slap in the face' – USMNT icon Tim Howard criticizes Middlesbrough's reported ‘crazy’ low bid for Columbus Crew defender Max Arfsten

The American icon has sharply criticized the Championship side’s reported move for the USMNT left back, claiming their offer is well below his value

Howard praises Crew for rejecting Middlesbrough's initial bidCompares market value to similar European prospectsAnalyst suggests Arfsten should command higher transfer feeGetty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED

Tim Howard expressed his frustration over Middlesbrough's recent transfer pursuit of Columbus Crew defender Max Arfsten, pointing to what he perceives as an undervaluation of American talent in the European market. The former Everton and Manchester United goalkeeper dismissed Middlesbrough's reported $3.5 million bid as inadequate for a player of Arfsten's quality and potential, arguing it reflects a persistent double standard in how American defenders are valued compared to their European counterparts.

"I mean, Middlesbrough man, like, pay us like you owe us, this is crazy. You know, he's a young, up-and-coming U.S national team player, right? More than likely going to be on the World Cup roster if he continues this way." Howard said on the “The rest of the world, wake up, man. This is such a slap in the face."

Howard mentioned that when soccer fans hear about USMNT stars complaining about a bias against them, this is a clear showcase of it.

"People who constantly complain about us banging in the drum about like, ‘Woe is me with the American player.' This is an example of it. If this was a young French kid, a young French left back, who just cracked into a national team who just played [in a tournament]…maybe $20 million. You can't get a bag of balls for $3 million dollars.”

Howard praised the Columbus Crew's decision to reject the Championship club's approach, saying the club recognizes Arfsten's true market value amid increasing European interest in the 22-year-old left-back and should hold out based on comparable transfers.

"So hats off to Columbus for saying, ‘yeah but thanks for no thanks’. Like, because, here's the other thing, here's the other thing. Given what you and I have spoken about, [Djorde] Mihailovic just went for $8 million plus $1 million add-on," he said.

“So, I'm looking at this, if I'm in the league and I'm like, I got money to spend, I'm going in with a bit of $4 million bucks. I'm gonna go, ‘well, hang on, Mihailovic just went for eight to nine million, I can get a great fee, four million for Max Arfsten? And I can have him for the next five years or certainly get a sell-on for him? It’s a no-brainer. It's crazy. It's crazy.”

AdvertisementWHAT TIM HOWARD SAID

Howard also praised Arfsten's strong form despite being the subject of transfer rumors.

“So excited for Max Arfsten because what we want to see, right? And we're on the outside and we know a thing or two," he said. "But what people want to see, what Columbus and Mauricio Pochettino want to see, is you go from strength to strength, right?

“So you have a good summer, great. What do you do? Just kick back, hang out, or do you crack on? And he's shown that, like that wasn't just a one-time thing, that he's ready to keep pushing. So, you go back, the coach always tells us, right? Go back to your club team. Keep proving it, he's done that," he said.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arfsten made his debut for Columbus Crew in 2023 and has since made 63 MLS appearances for the club, contributing to 21 goals. He made his debut for the USMNT in January 2025 and has since earned 10 caps, a tally that includes five at the 2025 Gold Cup.

Speaking on podcast: “Influential? I’d probably say [Louis] Van Gaal, Jose [Mourinho], and Ole [Gunnar Solskjær]. I’ve had so many different managers, so it’s impossible to compare them all. But when you are a developing player, like at a young age, up until Jose, I’d never had a manager so fixated on winning before him.
