    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Murillo’s performances have caught the eye, with his physical qualities being complemented by ball-playing flair that is expected of South American performers that line up in any position. The 23-year-old is a lot of fun to watch.

With there still plenty of potential to be unlocked in his game, it has been suggested that Murillo could go on to become the first £100 million ($132m) defender in world football – with his skill set considered to be a good fit for Clasico rivals in La Liga.

    WHAT PEARCE SAID

Forest legend Pearce – speaking in association with Freebets.com, home of best casino sites – told GOAL when asked if Murillo is destined to reach the very top: "I really like him. He’s one of these that churns the games out, plays all the games, reads the game really well.

"He’s not your stamp of a central defender. He’s got a physique that makes him look like SpongeBob, but I think he’s a real talent. Comfortable on the ball, can find a pass. He does the unusual at times as well but when you consider his age, he is a real talent.

"He’s one that Forest, with the addition of [Nikola] Milenkovic to partner him and the way they play, they fit the counter-attack method. Murillo probably could go and play at another club that play more expansive, and he’ll deal with that. I think it suits Milenkovic to play at Forest, because they cover him a little bit, he’s got to defend the 18-yard box, and that suits him brilliantly. Murillo is a wonderful talent and really important they keep hold of him."

Sangakkara: Maturity and hunger set Riyan Parag 2.0 apart

“He understands his game more and taking on more responsibility has become non-negotiable to him”

Shashank Kishore27-Mar-2024Riyan Parag is set to get an extended role at No. 4 at Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024. For his team, it’s reward for his work behind the scenes, his impressive domestic form, and the upsides he offers as an “all-round batter”, something he couldn’t put on display while playing as a finisher.Last season, Parag made 78 runs in seven innings. In IPL 2022, he made 183 in 14. In 2021, he made 93 in ten. These are underwhelming numbers. Yet, Royals believe they have seen enough in Parag that points to something special in the offing.”It was a cricketing decision,” Royals’ director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara said of Parag’s promotion in the batting order. “We looked at how he has performed over the years. It’s a very difficult thing for someone like Riyan, who has an overall game, just to always only get the toughest parts of the game where he has to come in and up the run rate at the death.Related

“We all felt that he has a much more important role that he can play for us. And the hard work that he did leading up to the season, all the runs he scored at domestic cricket, all played a part in that decision.”Riyan, and all the players, of course, have to repay that faith. He’s off to a great start. He just has to keep working on making sure he reads the game well and keep trusting what he can do at No. 4. He’s good against pace and again so that important position of four was ideally suited for him.”Parag opened IPL 2024 with a 29-ball 43 against Lucknow Super Giants, putting together a match-turning 93-run stand off 59 balls with Sanju Samson. Parag didn’t try to take down the bowlers from the get-go but played himself in and attacked once set. It’s in line with the role he has played at Assam. It’s a role that has brought him a truckload of runs in the domestic season, especially across the white-ball formats.

“He’s still a very, very young cricketer. We shouldn’t forget that. He’s also been hugely in the focus over the years as one of the faces of the franchise, of the younger brigade”Kumar Sangakkara on Ruyan Parag

At the Deodhar Trophy, the inter-zonal 50-over tournament, he was the highest run-getter, highest six-hitter, and third-highest (joint) wicket-taker. Two of his five List A hundreds came in that tournament. He was Player of the Tournament too.His first century there, a 102-ball 131, took his team from 57 for 5 to 337 for 8. His second, a 68-ball 102 not out, decimated West Zone. In the final, his team was tottering at 72 for 4 in a chase of 329 and Parag brought them back with a blistering 65-ball 95.He followed that with another chartbuster at the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s. He made 510 runs in ten innings at a strike rate of 182.79. This included a sensational run of seven back-to-back half-centuries. He subsequently earned a call-up from the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy to be part of a targeted pool of players.Riyan Parag had a sensational 2023-24 domestic season•PTI “The biggest thing we’ve seen in Riyan is maturity,” Sangakkara said. “Irrespective of the support we offer players, self-awareness of your game, knowing what is good for you, how your lifestyle is both on and off the field – all of that has changed in Riyan.”He’s still a very, very young cricketer. We shouldn’t forget that. He’s also been hugely in the focus over the years as one of the faces of the franchise, of the younger brigade. He’s also seen the huge jumps that [Yashasvi] Jaiswal and [Dhruv] Jurel have made, and he’s got a hunger there now and an example to follow into the national team.”We know players have a variety of ambitions – IPL is one of them. He understands his game more and taking on more responsibility has become non-negotiable to him.”Since Parag’s IPL debut in 2019, only Rahul Tewatia has played more games than his 55 in the tournament among uncapped Indian players. If Sangakkara’s reading of Parag is accurate, that “uncapped” bit against his name could change.

BCCI warns players: Don't prioritise IPL over domestic cricket

Non-participation in domestic cricket will lead to “severe implications”, secretary Jay Shah has said

BCCI secretary Jay Shah has asked centrally-contracted India players to “prove” themselves in domestic cricket if they aspire to play for the country and warned that non-participation will lead to “severe implications”. In a letter Shah wrote to the players earlier this week, which has been accessed by ESPNcricinfo, he said the “trend” of prioritising IPL over domestic cricket was a “cause for concern”.While saying the board was proud of the IPL’s success over the years, Shah wrote: “However, there is a trend that has started to emerge and is a cause for concern. Some players have begun prioritising the IPL over domestic cricket, a shift that was not anticipated. Domestic cricket has always been the foundation upon which Indian cricket stands, and it has never been undervalued in our vision for the sport.”It is essential to recognise that domestic cricket forms the backbone of Indian cricket and serves as the feeder line to Team India. Our vision for Indian cricket has been clear from the outset – every cricketer aspiring to play for India must prove themselves in domestic cricket. Performance in domestic tournaments remains a critical yardstick for selection, and non-participation in domestic cricket will carry severe implications.”Related

Shah said the letter was “not a critique but a reminder of the values that have shaped Indian cricket over the years. It is a call to collectively ensure that we do not dilute the significance of domestic cricket or weaken its core structure. The responsibility rests with each one of us, as custodians of the game, to uphold the essence of domestic cricket and work together to elevate Indian cricket to newer heights.”The letter will put the spotlight on players like Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar who have been out of the India squads recently for various reasons. Iyer has a Grade B BCCI contract whereas Kishan holds a Grade C contract. Chahar was not included the last time the BCCI renewed the contracts.Kishan last played for India in the T20I series against Australia in November before he pulled out of the South Africa tour at the turn of the year for personal reasons. He was then left out of the ongoing Test series against England. He has in the interim not decided to play the Ranji Trophy for Jharkhand and was reportedly training in Baroda along with Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya.Iyer, on the other hand, was dropped for the last three Tests against England after managing a top score of 35 in the first two Tests. Even though he played one round of the Ranji Trophy in January before the Tests, he didn’t play the last round of the league stage of the tournament.Chahar had also asked for time off because of personal reasons and has since regained his fitness, but he has also not played for Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy and last played a competitive game in December. He did, however, play the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy and the 20-over Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy late last year.

Viktor Gyokeres smashes record for Arsenal shirt sales just days after completing £64m move from Sporting CP

Arsenal supporters have emphatically welcomed Viktor Gyokeres to North London — and the numbers prove it. The Swedish striker's No.14 shirt has already smashed previous club sales records for a new signing, with early figures showing unprecedented levels of demand across both physical and online retail platforms.

The Gunners completed the high-profile capture of Gyokeres on July 26, paying an initial €63.5 million (£54.8 million or $74.2 million) to secure his services from Sporting CP. Ahead of the friendly clash against Newcastle United at Singapore’s National Stadium, Gyokeres was formally introduced to the crowd and was met with thunderous applause. The excitement among the fans was palpable, with many seeing him as the solution to the club’s long-standing search for a clinical centre-forward.

The No.14 kit holds a revered place in Arsenal folklore, having previously belonged to Thierry Henry, the club’s all-time leading scorer. Although Gyokeres reportedly would have preferred the No.9, his willingness to wear 14 has only further endeared him to fans who view the number as symbolic of Arsenal’s attacking legacy.

To celebrate his signing, the club rolled out a promotional offer allowing fans to have “Gyokeres 14” printed on any new-season Arsenal jersey at no extra cost. This service, typically priced at £16, was made available both at official club stores and via the team’s online shop. The promotion was met with such overwhelming enthusiasm that Arsenal’s online store briefly crashed due to the sheer volume of traffic.

The giveaway is set to continue through Thursday, and analysts expect the total sales to climb even higher as more fans take advantage of the free name-and-number offer. Importantly, the final tally will also include data from third-party retailers who are not participating in the promotional campaign, meaning the final numbers could be even more staggering.

Paine 'very interested' in Adelaide Strikers role if jobs are split

Tim Paine would be “very interested” in putting his name forward to be Adelaide Strikers’ head coach if South Australia decide to split the state and BBL coaching roles following Jason Gillespie’s departure. There is a significant overhaul going on at South Australia this off-season with long-time general manager of high performance Tim Nielsen departing along with Gillespie. Luke Williams, who has become a sought-after coach in T20 leagues, has also stepped down as head coach of the women’s state team although will remain in charge of the WBBL side and has signed as an assistant coach in the BBL.Paine was an assistant coach with Strikers in last season’s BBL as they reached the Challenger final and is keen to progress his career but remained realistic about where he would stand.”Would I like to coach the Adelaide Strikers? Of course, I would,” Paine said on . “But at the moment, they have no GM of cricket and a number of other roles that need to be filled before any of that happens.”They need to decide with South Australia and the Strikers, do you go down the same model they’ve just had of one coach, in which case I cannot do it, [but] if they were to split the roles, I would be very interested certainly in having a crack at getting the job.””But I’ve been coaching for about six months and it’s a big job and I’d imagine it would get a lot of experienced coaches interested in that job as well. But I would love to go through the process because, one, it would be a great learning curve for me as a professional coach, to go through some sort of process would be awesome for my development, but like any coach of course you want to coach in the biggest leagues you can get in.”Paine added that it wasn’t the right time in his career to consider a combined state and BBL role as he would not want to move his family out of Tasmania. “If you are looking at a Big Bash job and state job, that is enormous,” he said.Currently, the four states with a single BBL team – South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia – have opted for a unified head coach across the state and BBL set-up. Brisbane Heat, the defending champions, are also in need of a new coach after Wade Seccombe stood down.

Head coach admits top three remains a concern as Sciver-Brunt, Ecclestone remain cut above

Jon Lewis calls on England’s T20 top three take more risks

Jon Lewis, England Women’s head coach, has hailed the impact of Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone as “two of the best cricketers in the world”, but admits that the rest of the squad has a challenge to keep up with their standards, as they finalise their preparations for October’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh.Speaking at Chelmsford in the aftermath of England’s 178-run victory in the third ODI against Pakistan, Lewis insisted that the team was “tracking really well” after victories in all five of their completed matches in the 20- and 50-over formats, but acknowledged there remain a number of unresolved issues ahead of next month’s visit of New Zealand, particularly on the batting front.”We came into both series as really firm favourites,” Lewis said. “With due respect to Pakistan, they were a team we should beat. We played some good cricket at times, we were unconvincing at times, but today was a very convincing victory.”It was made all the more convincing by a stand-out display from Sciver-Brunt, whose ninth ODI century propelled England’s total past 300, before her two middle-order wickets wrecked any hope of Pakistan recovering from a slow start in their powerplay. By the time Ecclestone had swept through the tail with three late wickets, including her 100th in ODIs, the gulf between the teams was plain to see.”Sophie very, very rarely bowls poorly,” Lewis said. “I’ve not seen anyone get the better of her yet. We’ve got two of the best cricketers in the world playing in our team, which is a really fantastic thing for us as a cricket team.”Although it counts as a good problem to have, Lewis was mindful of the need for the rest of England’s line-up to raise their games, to mitigate against the off-days that can strike even the most consistent of batters.Even allowing for the truncated nature of the ODI series, Sciver-Brunt’s century was the only time that any batter in the series past fifty, while Danni Wyatt’s 87 in the T20I leg similarly stood out from the crowd.”They’ve got a tough act to follow, but they are tracking really well,” Lewis said of the rest of England’s batting line-up. “We’ve got a really talented group of young cricketers that we’re trying to develop. Would I like more consistent performance from our more senior players? For sure. But the competition between the players in the squad is really fierce. Our training sessions are really competitive. I’m really excited about where this group could go, but there’s always room for us to improve.”England’s main focus since the start of the year has been on their top three. Maia Bouchier emerged from a breakthrough winter in New Zealand as Wyatt’s preferred opening partner for the T20 World Cup, but her promising knock of 34 from 33 balls at Chelmsford was her highest score in five attempts.Tammy Beaumont was bowled attempting a ramp•Getty Images

Sophia Dunkley, meanwhile, was initially dropped from the squad after a collapse in her form over the winter, but was back as No.12 for the last two ODIs in Taunton and Chelmsford, after a run of impressive scores for South East Stars in the regional competitions. The other key consideration is Tammy Beaumont, England’s senior opener in the longer formats, whose bid to up her tempo, T20-style, at Chelmsford, ended in her being bowled for 11 from 22 balls via an ill-conceived ramp shot.”We’re getting there, but I could do with some of them putting our hands up a bit more, to be honest,” Lewis said, when asked whether the series just gone had helped or hindered his thought processes. “Batting in the top three, in T20 cricket in particular, is a really tricky thing to do. You have to take risks, but it’s about managing the amount of risk you take.On Beaumont’s shot selection, he added: “There was a big space on the ground [behind square]. It was a nice option, and I’ve seen her play that shot lots of times, it’s a strength of hers. Obviously, you’d like your players to hit the ball and not miss it, but what I don’t mind is the thinking behind the shot and the timing of the shot. I’m more than more than happy with that.”Lewis cited a recent ESPNcricinfo interview with Phil Salt, conducted during his break-out campaign with Kolkata Knight Riders at the IPL, as a template that he wanted his top-order to follow, particularly faced with potentially challenging conditions on slow, spinning wickets in Bangladesh at the World Cup.”[Salt] talked about the confidence of taking the risk from the first ball, and taking the powerplay on, and I would love our players to be able to do that,” he said. “We’re learning to do it, but managing and balancing risk is fundamental to those top three spaces. But the great thing that we have is depth at four, five and six in Nat, Heather [Knight] and Amy [Jones]. It feels like a really good combination of players to be able to play the spin bowlers in Bangladesh.”When it comes to the anticipated World Cup conditions, England have a trio of trump cards in their spin attack, with Charlie Dean and Sarah Glenn also ranked in the ICC’s top five for women’s T20I bowlers, alongside the world No.1, Ecclestone.Related

At the age of 25, Lewis admitted that the sky is the limit for what Ecclestone could hope to achieve in the rest of her career. However, he warned that the biggest challenge might be to ensure she remains motivated, particularly in contests such as the one just gone when the gulf between the teams is so pronounced.”She has an incredible talent and now our job is to is to make sure that she keeps enjoying her cricket,” he said. “She talks about that a lot about how much it needs to be fun for her. I never had this problem myself, but I can imagine that, when you’re one of the best players in the world and you’re playing against a team that isn’t challenging you as much as you as you would like, it can actually can get a little bit frustrating for you.””So it’s important we keep challenging her, and pushing her on, whilst making sure that she’s having a lot of fun along the way.”

Stuttering Royals look to find their form and firm up top-two spot

Rajasthan Royals vs Punjab Kings
Guwahati, 7.30pm IST (2pm GMT)

Big picture: Who will replace Buttler for RR?

From being fairly well-placed to top the points table, Rajasthan Royals now run the risk of slipping out of the top two after suffering three successive defeats at the pointy end of the tournament. Lucknow Super Giants’ loss to Delhi Capitals means Royals are already through to the playoffs, but they need to win one or two matches to confirm a top-two finish in the league phase.Jos Buttler’s departure to England for T20 World Cup duty has further complicated their path to the playoffs. It also remains to be seen whether Shimron Hetmyer has recovered sufficiently after missing Royals’ last two games with injury. Rovman Powell, who failed to finish chases against Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, didn’t even make the side as an Impact Player against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. How can Royals fill the Buttler-sized hole at the top? They can yank Tom Kohler-Cadmore from the bench or bump Dhruv Jurel up the order. While Kohler-Cadmore is now a regular in other T20 leagues around the world, he is yet to play a T20 in India. And while Jurel often takes first strike for Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy, he has opened the batting just once in T20 cricket.Related

Team news and Impact Player strategy

Rajasthan RoyalsKohler-Cadmore might make his IPL debut on Wednesday unless Royals want to use Jurel as an opener instead. Royals might pick just three overseas players – Trent Boult, Hetmyer (assuming he’s fit) and Kohler-Cadmore – and later bring in Powell or Nandre Burger as an Impact Player depending on the game situation and conditions.Probable XII: 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 Tom Kohler-Cadmore, 3 Sanju Samson (capt, wk), 4 Riyan Parag, 5 , 6 Shimron Hetmyer, 7 R Ashwin, 8 Trent Boult, 9 Avesh Khan, 10 Sandeep Sharma, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal, 12 Punjab KingsLiam Livingstone has left the IPL to get his knee “sorted” before the T20 World Cup, but his compatriots Sam Curran and Jonny Bairstow are available to PBKS for this fixture before they also head back to the UK to link up with the England squad. Karnataka swing bowler Vidwath Kaverappa will likely get another game as an Impact Player, with PBKS likely to replace him with a specialist batter. Kagiso Rabada has also returned home to recover from a soft-tissue infection, meaning a probable start for Nathan Ellis.Probable XII: 1 Prabhsimran Singh, 2 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 3 Rilee Rossouw, 4 Shashank Singh, 5 , 6 Ashutosh Sharma, 7 Sam Curran (capt), 8 Harshal Patel, 9 Nathan Ellis, 10 Rahul Chahar, 11 Arshdeep Singh, 12 3:33

Which team will be most affected by the departure of English players?

In the spotlight: Riyan Parag and Jitesh Sharma

After having reeled off a world-record seven fifties in a row for Assam in the 20-overs Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy, Riyan Parag returns to Guwahati for his third match at the venue in the IPL. After having managed only 20 at No.6 against PBKS last season in Guwahati, the local boy has a chance to go bigger this time, given his recent form at No.4. He is 100 runs away from drawing level with Ruturaj Gaikwad as the second-highest run-getter this season, with Virat Kohli being the only batter to top 600 runs this season so far.Jitesh Sharma began the IPL as India’s incumbent T20 keeper-batter, but his form nosedived so sharply that he was dropped for the upcoming World Cup. He has scored only 133 runs in ten innings this season at an average of 13.30 and a strike rate of under 125. His strike rate is the third lowest – behind Sam Curran (116.29) and Ajinkya Rahane (120.11) – among batters who have played at least ten innings this IPL. Can he remedy those numbers and end this IPL with a bang?

Stats that matter

  • Arshdeep Singh has a favourable match-up against Yashasvi Jaiswal in T20s, having dismissed him twice in 20 balls while conceding only 26 runs. Arshdeep vs Powell, though, is a more action-packed match-up: 56 runs off 28 balls with three dismissals.
  • Boult has played more than ten games at seven different opponents in the IPL. His average (43.6) and economy rate (9.98) are both at their worst against PBKS.

A concorrência, tanto no meio quanto no ataque, será bastante acirrada. No entanto, após um período de tanto aprendizado e de luta por afirmação, Giovanni retorna da Europa com fôlego renovado para acirrar a disputa no setor ofensivo e buscar seu espaço nas Laranjeiras.
