Derbyshire chip away at 132-run deficit with unbroken opening stand
ECB Reporters Network21-Jul-2023England fast bowler Matthew Potts paraded his batting credentials as Durham piled on the runs in the LV=Insurance County Championship match against Derbyshire at Derby.Potts scored 64 and shared an eighth-wicket stand of 110 from 113 balls with Brydon Carse who made 80 on a day of stoppages at the Incora County Ground. The Division Two leaders secured maximum batting points for the sixth time this season before they were bowled out for 575 with fast bowler Sam Conners claiming 5 for 115. That gave Durham a lead of 132 but Derbyshire responded strongly in their second innings to close on 89 without loss, 43 behind, with Luis Reece 54 not outThe prospects of a positive result on a pitch where more than 800 runs had been scored on the first two days receded further when only 47 balls were bowled in the morning because of rain. There was time for Conners to take his fourth wicket when Migael Pretorious was lbw playing back to a full-length ball but after lunch the game was held up again but this time in bizarre circumstances. A coin or a washer was found embedded in the pitch resulting in a delay of several minutes before the umpires decided it did not pose a problem and both teams agreed the match could continue.Potts and Carse took advantage but only after two excellent catches had stalled Durham’s advance towards a full house of batting points.Ollie Robinson was looking to the cover boundary when he drove Zak Chappell powerfully but Anuj Dal showed why he is rated one of the top fielders on the circuit by taking off to his right and holding a stunning one-handed grab.Graham Clark’s edged drive at Chappell was almost past Harry Came at first slip but he swooped to pull off a superb low catch. At that point, Durham were still 33 short of 450 but Potts continued to exude confidence, putting away the bad balls with crisp drives and cuts.He reached his third first-class fifty by turning Dal off his hip to the fine leg fence for his seventh four and with Carse quickly finding his range, Durham were motoring along at nearly five an over.Carse straight drove Dal for six and he also hit nine fours in a 41-ball fifty that underlined the dominance of bat over ball. The lead was 86 when Potts drove at Reece in the final over before tea and Wayne Madsen pouched his 26th catch in Championship cricket this season. But there was no respite after the interval as Carse and Ben Raine added 43 before Carse was caught behind down the leg side off Reece.Conners quickly cleaned up Matthew Parkinson to claim his fifth wicket and leave Derbyshire with 27 overs to bat until the close.Reece and Came had some anxious moments against Raine and Potts with the new ball but once they settled in, played with increasing assurance on a pitch which shows no sign of deteriorating.Reece came down the track to dispatch Parkinson for six and although Came edged Raine just over the slips, Durham could not break through and with heavy rain forecast for much of day four, a draw looks increasingly likely.
West Indies captain Hayley Matthews continued her rich and dominating form against Ireland with both bat and ball, and sent the visitors back home without a win on the entire tour after whitewashing them 3-0 in the T20I series. West Indies had won the three-match ODI series 2-0 after the second ODI had been washed out.On Saturday, Matthews first took 4 for 14 – including a hat-trick – to restrict Ireland to 116 for 9, and then hammered a 34-ball 48 to set up a commanding eight-wicket win with 11 balls to spare. She finished as the Player of the Match in all three T20Is, the Player of the T20I Series, and had started the ODI series too in similar fashion, having scored a hundred and taken three wickets.Put in to bat, Ireland were propelled by a rapid second-wicket stand of 66 in 62 balls between Amy Hunter and Orla Prendergast after Matthews had trapped Gaby Lewis with her first ball. However, Ireland stuttered as soon as that partnership was broken with Hunter’s run-out at the non-striker’s end after a deflection off the bowler’s hand, for 44, and only one other batter – captain Laura Delany – scored in double digits after Hunter and Prendergast.Once Prendergast holed out off Afy Fletcher for 40, Matthews wiped the middle and lower orders out with a hat-trick in the 18th over that reduced Ireland to 110 for 7. Delany was left unbeaten on 14 off 18 as she saw wickets fall around her, and stretched the team score to 116.West Indies, too, lost an early wicket and were led by a second-wicket stand between Matthews and Aaliyah Alleyne worth 80 off 61 balls, as it crushed Ireland’s chances. Matthews struck eight fours, and fell just short of fifty when she was bowled by Georgina Dempsey in the 12th over. But Chinelle Henry sealed the chase with a boundary, and Alleyne remained unbeaten on 49 off 51, her joint-highest T20I score.”I’m just happy I was able to contribute to the team win,” Matthews told CWI Media after the game. “It was great to see some of the younger players getting the opportunity this series and coming into their own. We’ve had debutant players perform really well. We’ve had Chinelle Henry get her maiden ODI half-century then back it up with a second one (in the series), then two not outs in the T20 series.”I just want to thank all the girls who have supported me since I’ve become captain. Thank you for backing me up out on the field, we have bigger challenges ahead and I look forward to their support.”

Jaffer: Powell’s innings the difference in the game
After winning the first of five T20Is against India on Thursday, Rovman Powell said that West Indies’ batting against India’s spinners in the middle overs will hold the key to the outcome of the series.”It was difficult,” Powell said of West Indies’ slowdown in the middle overs – they went from 54 for 2 after six overs to 96 for 3 after 14 – in the first T20I. “We always knew that the new ball was going to give us runs. It was always going to be a good powerplay and then it [was going to] slow down in the middle, because they have a lot of very good spinners.”This series will be decided on how West Indian batters bat spin in those middle overs. If we bat spin good during the middle overs, then we have lot of batters at the back end and we have a lot of power in the back end. That makes left-handers – [Shimron] Hetmyer, [Nicholas] Pooran and Kyle Mayers – very, very important for those middle overs.Related

Tarouba Thursday offers glimpses of a future with a lot of Tilak Varma in it
“It was going to be difficult to start, it’s always difficult to start in the Caribbean. But once you get a start, runs is there.”After losing the ODI series 2-1, West Indies fought hard to clinch the first T20I in Tarouba narrowly by four runs after putting up 149 for 6.On a slow and tricky pitch, India’s spin trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel bowled a combined nine overs, accounting for three of the six West Indies wickets to fall. When Pooran left West Indies at 96 for 4 in the 15th over after a 34-ball 41, it was Powell’s 48 off 32 balls that lifted the team to what seemed like a below-par total at the halfway point. While India played with three spinners, West Indies opted for just one specialist spinner in Akeal Hosein. The left-arm spinner gave away just 17 runs in four overs, bowling 14 dots and also removing Shubman Gill in the third over of the chase. Though Jason Holder’s 2 for 19 – including a double-wicket maiden – took West Indies home in the end, did West Indies miss an extra spinner?1:26
How did West Indies outbowl India?
“Yeah, after watching what the Indians bowled, I was thinking if we were a spinner short, to be honest,” he said. “But we’ve got to utilise what we have, and back our skills. We know what our fast bowlers bowl, with many change-ups, it will be difficult for the Indians.”The game was still evenly poised when India needed ten off the last over with three wickets in hand. However, Romario Shepherd bowled an excellent final over where he conceded just four runs and knocked off Kuldeep and effected a run out to dismiss Arshdeep Singh, stopping India at 145.”I think it was a game [for West Indies] to lose, to be honest,” Powell said of the last over. “Because they didn’t have a set batter, one of their top six batters wasn’t there. So I was confident going into the last over.”Not just the 18th over, he [Holder] summed up the conditions very well. At the interval, he tells us in the dressing room that ‘pace off – force the Indians to hit the ball, not use the pace’. And I think today Jase was fantastic.”
We’ve still got a couple of months before the 2024/25 season wraps up, but the new regime at Everton are already whirring away at the negotiating table, finding ways to strengthen David Moyes’ squad.
Incoming Director of Football Angus Kinnear needs to navigate through an overload of contractual issues. 15 players, including loanees and those out on loan, are out of a deal this summer, and while some may be retained, Everton need to bolster.
More firepower is needed, but the Toffees aren’t going to neglect their defensive ranks.
Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski make a formidable and physical pairing, but Everton may have received a boost in a long-standing target and could act in the coming months.
Everton back in for exciting target
In 2023, Sean Dyche submitted an enquiry regarding Juventus star Federico Gatti, 26, as he looked to bolster his Everton defence. The Merseysiders were rejected.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
However, according to TuttoJuve – translated by Sport Witness – Everton have received fresh hope in their long-term interest as Gatti’s contractual renewal at the Allianz Stadium have been put on hold until the end of the season.
This is an exciting development for Everton, but they are not alone. Both the Toffees and Newcastle United are named as suitors. Now, it’s up to Everton to work out whether they want to meet Juve’s €30m (£25m) asking price.
What Gatti would bring to Everton
Gatti joined Juventus from Frosinone in January 2022 and he has since been fielded 102 times, scoring seven goals and lifting last season’s Copa Italia trophy.
He’s immensely crisp in possession, also ready to make clearance after clearance. Keeper of nine clean sheets in Serie A this season, Gatti would be a firm addition to an Everton side looking to take the next step in their development.
And what a story. The 26-year-old was in the fifth tier of Italian football only six years ago, when he was 20. Now, he’s a regular starter for one of the biggest clubs in the country and a five-cap international besides.
Described as an “absolute hero” by talent scout Jacek Kulig for his rise and rise through the levels, Moyes could land his own Branthwaite signing by getting this one over the line.
Branthwaite has become one of the most coveted centre-backs in England over the past year, with Manchester United failing with a series of bids last summer. However, he too is a player of humble beginnings.
Not actually a member of Everton’s Finch Farm academy crew, in January 2020 the Toffees signed the 22-year-old from Carlisle United for a £1m fee; he was only 17 at the time.
Now a fully-fledged star in Everton’s make-up, Branthwaite started life in League Two and enjoyed a loan spell in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers.
He’s a different type of defender to Gatti, more grounded in defensive quality and relentless in protecting his goal, but this contrasting skill set could be perfect for Moyes’ project as it looks to step up the table for good.

Barcelona are set to announce the signing of Joan Garcia from city rivals Espanyol, with reporting that La Liga have confirmed his €25 million (£21m/$28m) release clause has been paid. The 24-year-old goalkeeper will be presented this week, with personal terms already agreed. Meanwhile, Ter Stegen has reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Galatasaray amid his fury at the club's conduct surrounding the transfer, though now reports he remains defiant and vows to stay.

The Catalan giants' goalkeeping shake-up reflects their broader financial struggles. Garcia, much cheaper in salary terms, represents a long-term solution as the club look to rejuvenate the squad and comply with La Liga’s financial fair play rules. Ter Stegen’s possible departure could save the club millions in wages and unlock space for other reinforcements.
DID YOU KNOW?
The 24-year-old will jump from a €400k salary at Espanyol to €3m (£2.5m/$3.4m) at Barcelona, but couldn’t comment publicly until La Liga validated the clause payment. Meanwhile, Ter Stegen, one of Barca’s top earners with three years left on his contract, edges closer to a shock move to Galatasaray who recently signed Leroy Sane and are now targeting another high-profile addition.

Once La Liga approves the transfer, Barcelona will officially present Garcia. The goalkeeper is expected to release a farewell statement to Espanyol fans. On the other side, Ter Stegen’s uncertainty continues.
After what has been a disappointing campaign for Tottenham Hotspur this season, there will surely be plenty of transfer business done in the summer.
As things stand, the Lilywhites will not be playing in Europe next season, given they are languishing in 14th in the Premier League, with just 34 points to their name.
In fact, Ange Postecoglou’s side must win the Europa League in order to qualify for European competitions in 2025/26. Winning that particular competition will see them play Champions League football next campaign.
So, there could well be a squad overhaul for Spurs in the summer. Already, they have been linked with one addition in midfield.
Latest on Spurs' midfield search
One of the biggest bargains of the summer could be Angel Gomes. It seems like the England international will not renew his deal at French outfit Lille, and will depart the Ligue 1 club upon the expiration of his contract at the end of the season.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
Well, according to a report from Pete O’Rourke for Football Insider, the Lilywhites ‘are leading the race’ to sign Gomes on a free this summer. This move comes as part of a ‘planning a potential midfield overhaul’ from Postecoglou over the summer.
One of the teams thought to be interested in signing Gomes at one stage was Manchester United, from which Gomes is an academy graduate.
However, the Red Devils are not thought to be in the running, as per the report. Instead, the North Londoners could face competition from clubs across Europe, from the likes of France, Spain and Germany, should they wish to sign Gomes.
Why Gomes could be Spurs' own Rice
Despite being just 24 years of age, Gomes has been in and around professional football since 2017. As a 16-year-old, he made his debut for Man United, the youngest player in 64 years to achieve the feat, beating the record held by the great Duncan Edwards.
After leaving Old Trafford on a free transfer in 2020, the Englishman joined Lille. He became an established member of their first team the year after joining, following a loan at Portuguese side Boavista.
In total, the versatile midfielder has played 134 times for the club, scoring ten goals and grabbing 19 assists. That included eight Ligue 1 assists last term, where he excelled in a number-eight role.
He is also capable of playing as a number ten and a number six, offering great versatility for Spurs’ midfield should he make the move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The 24-year-old has already made a great impact for England. Despite not being included by Thomas Tuchel in his first squad during the recent international break, he thrived under interim boss Lee Carsley.
Gomes grabbed a brilliant assist for Jack Grealish against Finland, showing composure under pressure and sliding the Manchester City winger in behind with a lovely reverse pass.
If Spurs sign Gomes, he could become their very own verison of Declan Rice. The Arsenal star was described as “a wonderful midfield player” by Jamie Carragher in February and has certainly made a big impact in his 91 Gunners appearances so far.
Indeed, there are some differences between Rice and Gomes, notably in their physicality. Standing at just 5 foot 6 the Lille star is more lightweight than the 6 foot 2 Arsenal number 41.
However, Gomes makes up for it with his ability on the ball. He is extremely press-resistant and able to evade tackles with relative ease.
Indeed, he can certainly be compared to Rice statistically on FBref, with the pair noted as similar players in Europe’s top five leagues, among their fellow midfielders.
Per 90 minutes, the former Man United star averages 5.98 progressive passes, compared to 6.21 for Rice. He also averages 0.61 successful take-ons, with Rice averaging just 0.42 per game.

As football statistician Statman Dave explained, Gomes is an “unbelievably gifted” player. He has an abundance of technical quality, and whilst he is smaller than some midfielders, he still possesses the ability to break up play, as the stats show.
For a free transfer, this could revolutionise the Spurs midfield and help them climb the Premier League table to compete for European spots again.

There’s little question that Everton’s myriad supporters allowed themselves to dream of the future under David Moyes’ management.
Why not? The past years have been fraught with strife, with suffering, but Farhad Moshiri has been replaced by new ownership and Sean Dyche’s pragmatic tactics have been ousted in favour of Moyes’ pragmatic tactics.
The difference, of course, is that Moyes’ blueprint is superior. The Scottish manager lifted West Ham United from the dregs of the Premier League, led them through three successive continental campaigns, winning the Conference League in the second.
Relegation was a very real possibility when Moyes took over in January, but he’s eliminated the club’s tactical insecurities and crafted a seven-match unbeaten run in the top flight.
The 15th-place side, well above the drop zone, now need to turn toward recruitment, with incoming Director of Football Angus Kinnear tasked with overhauling a squad yielding 15 imminent contract expiries.
There’s a lot of uncertainty ahead, but Everton are about to step into a new home at Bramley Moore and a few fresh faces are set to follow.
Let’s take a look at how Moyes might line his team up for the 2025/26 campaign.
GK – Jordan Pickford
What is there to say? Jordan Pickford’s going nowhere. England’s number one, Everton’s number one. He’s a modern legend for the Toffees and is joint-third for clean sheets in the Premier League this season.
RB – Vladimir Coufal
A pragmatic signing. But in fairness, Vladimir Coufal has lifted European gold under Moyes’ wing at West Ham. The experienced right-back might be pushing mid-thirties but would be a smart addition on a free transfer, especially with Seamus Coleman and Ashley Young both into the final few months of their Everton careers.
Coufal – who has been touted with a move to Merseyside – would jockey for a starting spot with Jake O’Brien and Nathan Patterson. Rich options indeed.
CB – Jake O'Brien
Let’s just preface this by stating that James Tarkowski is going nowhere, but for the sake of underlining Everton’s growing strength in depth, O’Brien gets the nod here.
He’s been a moveless pillar of strength at right-back for Moyes in recent weeks but is most at home in the centre. Last season, at Lyon in France, journalist Zach Lowy hailed the Irishman as a “revelation in defence,” words that are now beginning to ring true at Goodison Park.
CB – Jarrad Branthwaite
Brilliance comes at a price, and for Everton, that price might be £75m. Indeed, Jarrad Branthwaite has exuded quality once again this season and has reentered transfer discussion as the summer window looms large.
Everton’s star defender is on Manchester United’s radar and is sure to attract attention from other high-profile clubs, but Moyes and Kinnear must fight tirelessly to ensure he remains on Merseyside for the coming campaign.
LB – Vitalii Mykolenko
Vitalii Mykolenko divides opinion somewhat but has been a mainstay for Everton this season, hitting the third-most amount of minutes (2,544) for Everton in the Premier League this season, behind Pickford and Tarkowski.
DM – Idrissa Gueye
Idrissa Gueye is among the raft of Everton stars nearing the end of their Blue deals. Despite his twilight age of 35, the Senegalese’s performances suggest he deserves an extension.

The evergreen ace is still a player of value, and could be a priceless part of Moyes’ Everton squad next term.
CM – James Garner
Industrious and perhaps underrated, James Garner has well and truly established himself in Moyes’ system, starting Everton’s past seven Premier League matches.
With a shrewd eye for the technical side of the game, Garner will no doubt be expecting to retain his starting berth next term, a neat counterpoint to the tough-tackling Gueye.
AM – Iliman Ndiaye
Everton’s magic man. Sighted in first-team training ahead of next week’s Merseyside derby, the injured Iliman Ndiaye has been a remarkable signing for Everton, joining from Marseille for £15m last summer.
Suitors are sure to sniff around for this exciting talent, who has scored eight goals this season and carries a “dynamite” quality that will take some topping no matter the success of Everton’s summer activity.
RW – Tom Fellows
Jesper Lindstrom and Jack Harrison are both on loan and perhaps haven’t played well enough across the campaign to deserve permanent contracts at Bramley Moore. Thus, Tom Fellows could find himself playing first-team football for Everton next season.
The West Bromwich Albion talent, only 21, has racked up 11 assists in the Championship this year and has been tracked by Everton for a while now, with Football Insider recently confirming the Merseysiders are ‘well-placed’ to complete a summer deal.
His pace, power and acceleration have even led talent scout Jacek Kulig to hail him as the next version of Paris Saint-Germain superstar Ousmane Dembele, who has been in incredible form this season, scoring 30 goals from 37 appearances.
LW – Dwight McNeil
Yet to taste football with Moyes at the helm, Dwight McNeil’s blistering start to the 2024/25 season was blighted by an injury picked up in December.
Even so, he’s a magical technician and a tireless competitor besides. It’s exciting to think of the link-up play that could be forged between him and Ndiaye.
