Wrestlers' protest: 1983 World Cup winners 'distressed and disturbed' at developments

BCCI president Roger Binny has clarified that he wasn’t a part of the group that issued the statement on the matter

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Jun-2023The surviving members of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning cricket team – with the exception of Roger Binny, currently the BCCI president – have said they were “distressed and disturbed” at leading Indian wrestlers being “manhandled” by security personnel in the national capital of Delhi earlier this week.In a statement, the squad members also said they are “most concerned” that that athletes might be “dumping” their medals in the Ganga river as part of their ongoing protest against the non-action against Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, against whom the wrestlers have levelled accusations of sexual abuse and exploitation.”We are distressed and disturbed at the unseemly visuals of our champion wrestlers being manhandled,” a statement released to PTI on Friday by members of the squad said. “We are also most concerned that they are thinking of dumping their hard earned medals into river Ganga.Related

Wrestlers' protest: Kumble and Uthappa call for quick resolution

“Those medals have involved years of effort, sacrifice, determination, and grit and are not only their own but the nation’s pride and joy. We urge them not to take any hasty decision in this matter and also fervently hope that their grievances are heard and resolved quickly. Let the law of the land prevail.”Kapil Dev, the captain of that side, said that “the whole of 1983 team stands by the statement we have issued”. But Binny, the highest wicket-taker in the tournament, later clarified that he was not among the signatories.”Contrary to some media reports, I would like to clarify that I have not issued any statement regarding the current situation of the wrestlers’ protest,” Binny told PTI. “I believe that the competent authorities are working on to resolve the issue. As a former cricketer, I believe that sports should not be mixed with politics.”

The update came two days after Anil Kumble, Robin Uthappa and a few other former cricketers expressed their anguish at the situation. On Sunday, images of Vinesh Phogat, among other wrestlers, being dragged away from the site of their protest in central Delhi had emerged. Delhi Police acted against the wrestlers – whose protest has been led, since January, by Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, the last two of whom are Olympic Games medallists – when they breached the security barriers and started to march towards the new parliament building, which was being inaugurated by Narendra Modi, India’s prime minister, at the time. The protesters were pushed into buses and taken away, and police personnel cleared the protest site – not far from the parliament building not long after.Apart from Kumble and Uthappa, there was a message from Irfan Pathan, who tweeted “I’m so sad to see the visuals of our Athletes” on Sunday night itself, and from Manoj Tiwary, now a Member of the Legislative Assembly in West Bengal, who offered his support to the wrestlers.

The tweets from Kumble, Irfan and Tiwary came around the time of the IPL 2023 final, which Chennai Super Kings won off the last ball against Gujarat Titans. The morning after the final was completed – after rain in Ahmedabad caused long delays over two days – Malik had even tweeted out a jibe of sorts directed at the Indian cricket community.

Not long after that, Malik, Phogat and Punia made public statements saying that they would be immersing their medals, earned at competitions around the world including the Olympic Games and the World Championships, into the River Ganga, which they have since opted against. The wrestlers’ protest started in January. They have alleged that Singh sexually abused and exploited women wrestlers – including a minor – over the past decade. That was after Delhi Police agreed to investigate the charges against Singh a week after the complaint was first filed and only after the wrestlers moved the Supreme Court for action. But the wrestlers’ larger mission has been to remove Singh from his position, and to draw attention to the charges against him.Just around a month ago, Kapil Dev, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Shikha Pandey were among the cricketers to speak up about the protests being carried out by India’s top wrestlers demanding Singh’s dismissal.”Will they ever get justice,” Kapil had asked at the time in an Instagram post with a photograph of Phogat, Punia and Malik, who have been the faces of the protest. They were part of a group of 30-odd wrestlers at Jantar Mantar in January, too, when they made public the allegations against Singh, a member of parliament from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

“You do come forward to congratulate us when we win something. Even the cricketers tweet when that happens. [What has happened now]? Are you so afraid of the system? Or maybe there’s something fishy going on there too?”Vinesh Phogat, on April 28

Following that, the union sports ministry, of which former BCCI president Anurag Thakur is the man in charge, tasked its oversight committee to investigate the matter and submit the findings by February. The committee included, among others, boxer MC Mary Kom and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, both Olympic Games medallists (Mary Kom is also a former member of parliament). Reports say that the findings of the oversight committee have not been made available to the wrestlers.Support for the wrestlers from the cricket community had been limited all along, and Phogat had even issued a plea of sorts to the Indian cricket community, asking why they had been silent on the plight of their fellow sportspersons.”The entire country worships cricket but not even a single cricketer has spoken up,” the quoted Phogat as saying. “We aren’t saying that you speak in our favour, but at least put up a neutral message and say there should be justice for whichever party. This is what pains me… Be it cricketers, badminton players, athletics, boxing…”It’s not like we don’t have big athletes in our country. There are cricketers… During the Black Lives Matter movement in the US, they showed their support. Don’t we deserve even that much?”You do come forward to congratulate us when we win something. Even the cricketers tweet when that happens. [What has happened now]? Are you so afraid of the system? Or maybe there’s something fishy going on there too?”

According to the Red Devils have placed a hefty £70 million ($95m) valuation on Garnacho, with several elite clubs across Europe keeping a close eye on his availability. Club officials believe Garnacho is one of the few players currently on the books who could fetch a sizeable transfer fee and help fund their broader recruitment plans. While not actively pushing him out, United are understood to be open to negotiations if the right offer comes along.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea and Aston Villa have both been mentioned as domestic suitors, while on the continent, Napoli, Atletico Madrid, and Bayer Leverkusen are also exploring the possibility of a move. A move to the Bundesliga would see him reunite with Erik ten Hag. Villa’s interest is more unexpected, though any formal offer could hinge on the sale of Morgan Rogers, who is himself being pursued by Chelsea and Arsenal.

  • WHAT GARNACHO SAID

Garnacho’s own comments following United’s Europa League final loss to Tottenham Hotspur have further stoked speculation about his future. The winger, who was surprisingly benched for the decisive match in Bilbao, appeared disillusioned in the aftermath. In a candid post-match statement, he described the campaign as “s***” and left his own status uncertain, saying: "I’m going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens next."

The situation with Garnacho is part of a broader attacking reshuffle at Old Trafford, with a number of other forwards also facing uncertain futures. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony are all reportedly on the chopping block as United look to reshape their frontline.

Man City are brewing Pep's new Busquets in their young "Rodri back-up"

One of Manchester City’s premium January signings was midfielder Nico Gonzalez. The former Barcelona star, who is a product of the esteemed La Masia academy, made the move to the Etihad Stadium for £50m from Portuguese side FC Porto.

So far, the 23-year-old is only a short way into his Citizens career. He has only played eight times so far for Pep Guardiola’s side, starting six times in the Premier League and Champions League.

It was the latter competition in which he scored his first, and to date, only goal for City, although it was a consolation strike against Real Madrid.

Playing as a number six so far for City, Gonzalez was partly signed to help ease the blow of Rodri’s absence, who is still sidelined with injury.

Based on the statistics above, he’s done a pretty good job of covering.

The latest on Rodri's injury recovery at Man City

It has been a tough season for City on the pitch, which has not been helped by the fact that Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, a key player in the middle of the park, has been out injured. The Spaniard picked up a serious knee ligament injury against Arsenal in September and is yet to return.

However, at the start of March, there was some positive news to come out of the City camp surrounding the midfielder’s return to action. Guardiola said he was unsure if Rodri would make it back before the end of the season, but did not rule it out, saying “maybe it’s going to happen”.

Incredibly, the Spain international, who won Euro 2024 last summer, has already returned to training on grass. City’s official account posted a video on social media at the end of February of their star man sprinting and training with a ball at his feet.

So, there are encouraging signs that the Spain international will be back before too long. Even if he doesn’t play in the Premier League this season, then perhaps he will feature in the Club World Cup over the summer.

Either way, there is no doubt he has been a big miss for City. Perhaps Guardiola wishes they had kept one player at the club over the summer, who could have helped City in Rodri’s absence.

Manchester City's in-house Rodri alternative

City have plenty of exciting youngsters on their books, so finding a way to fit them all in the squad is not necessarily easy.

One of the players they loaned out in the summer was midfielder Maximo Perrone, who could have been a perfect Rodri alternative.

Maximo Perrone

The 22-year-old midfielder has spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Como, managed by legendary midfielder Cesc Fabregas. Playing as a number six, Perrone has featured in 18 games this season, grabbing two assists.

He does have an eye for goal, too, as he showed in pre-season. The Argentine youngster scored for City in one of their games, slotting home from close range and showcasing his ability going forward.

Perrone has featured twice for City so far in competitive action, with both appearances coming in their treble-winning season, 2022/23. He played in the FA Cup and Premier League, before going on loan to Las Palmas the following season.

In Spain, the youngster was impressive. He completed the most progressive passes per game by a U21 player across the big five leagues in Europe, with 8.41. That is according to Wyscout via football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

This term, his numbers from FBref are also impressive. He is impressive on the ball, completing 55.69 passes per 90 minutes on average, ranking him in the top 11% of Serie A midfielders. He also averages 2.86 tackles and interceptions each game. It’s easy to see, therefore, why he’s allegedly modelled his game on one of Pep’s favourite ever players; Sergio Busquets.

Football analyst Ben Mattinson said that City should have “used Perrone to manage Rodri’s minutes”, labelling him the “ideal Rodri back-up”, which is backed up well by the stats. He is quality on the ball, which is demanded of him in Guardiola’s side and is defensively astute, too.

Looking ahead to next season, the Citizens might well look to integrate the youngster into the side, to help take the burden off Rodri and provide an excellent alternative.

Worth more than Phillips: Leeds have hit the jackpot with "monster" star

In recent days, Leeds United have been linked with a fairytale reunion with former midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the summer should they achieve promotion from the Championship.

The 29-year-old departed Elland Road back in the summer of 2022, joining champions Manchester City in a £45m deal – allowing him to take the next step in his career after racking up over 200 appearances for his boyhood side.

However, the move hasn’t worked out as either party would’ve anticipated, featuring just 31 times for the Citizens before being sent on separate loan spells to West Ham United and Ipswich Town.

Kalvin Phillips for West Ham

It would be a special transfer should the ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’ return to the side where he made his name, potentially allowing him to get his career back on track after a stop-start few years.

One thing is for sure, the hierarchy conducted phenomenal business with the funds generated from his departure, allowing them to sign numerous stars as a result.

Leeds’ signings made with the Phillips fee

In the summer of 2022, Leeds managed to pull off a deal to land Tyler Adams from RB Leipzig, offering a direct replacement for the departing Phillips.

The American would join in a £20m deal, making 28 appearances during his solo year in Yorkshire, departing for a £23m fee 12 months after joining, allowing for a quick £3m profit.

Georginio Rutter was another player who joined in the same season, costing £35m from German outfit Hoffenheim – taking his time in being a success at Elland Road.

The Frenchman failed to score in his first six months at the club but sparked into life in the Championship last campaign, notching eight goals and 16 assists, leaving in a £40m to join Brighton – also netting a profit in the process.

One other player moved to Elland Road during the 2022/23 season, with his market value soaring as a result of his showings during his own stint in Yorkshire.

The player who’s now worth more than Phillips

The Championship has been a fiercely competitive division this year, with Leeds still in the race for promotion as the season edges ever closer to its conclusion.

Daniel Farke has done a superb job in leading the side to another promotion battle after picking up from their playoff final defeat against Southampton last season.

Wilfried Gnonto has played a key part in the club’s success in recent times but has dropped out of the side as of late due to the form of others around him.

The Italian cost just £3.8m from Swiss side FC Zurich back in the summer of 2022, with very few supporters having any idea how impressive he would turn out to be in Yorkshire.

The 21-year-old has registered 18 goals during his three seasons at the club, with five of his efforts coming in the second tier this campaign, playing an important role in their quest for promotion.

Gnonto, who has previously been dubbed a “monster” by one analyst, has registered over 100 appearances for the Whites, highlighting his importance to the club after his bargain move.

Given his displays, he was valued at £50m by the club at the end of January amid interest from Saudi Arabia – desperately wanting to keep hold of the 21-year-old who could improve further given his tender age.

His subsequent value is higher than that of former midfielder Phillips, who’s now valued at £16.8m by Transfermarkt after his failed move to Manchester City a couple of years ago.

The opportunity to land the 29-year-old this summer would undoubtedly inject excitement into the fanbase, given his previous run of form in the first team under Marcelo Bielsa.

However, there’s no denying the club made the right call in allowing him to leave, banking a huge profit and allowing for investment in the likes of Gnonto, who too could also command a mammoth fee in the future.

Everton may now sign shock 120-career goal star in discounted £25m transfer

In what would cause a major shock in the summer transfer window, The Friedkin Group could now land a bargain £25m deal to sign a European striker for Everton who has scored over 100 career goals.

Everton eyeing shock DCL replacement

Of course, what should not come as a shock is Everton’s pursuit of a striker. As things stand, the Toffees are set to lose Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the end of the season when his current contract expires. Leaving David Moyes with just Beto – who has only impressed in glimpses – to lead the line, the Toffees desperately need fresh firepower.

On that front, the transfer rumours have already been arriving thick and fast with names such as Hamza Igamane threatening to steal the headline in recent weeks. The Rangers forward has enjoyed an impressive season in a struggling side and could now earn a move away from Ibrox as a result.

Hamza Igamane

Friedkin certainly haven’t been afraid of ambition since taking over in Merseyside back in December before almost instantly sacking Sean Dyche in favour of Moyes in what has proved to be a successful decision.

Now, however, they could be preparing to make their most ambitious move yet. According to GiveMeSport, Friedkin may now sign Dusan Vlahovic at a discounted £25m price for Everton this summer in a shock deal for a striker who was among Europe’s best not so long ago.

Having initially arrived for a hefty £67m at Juventus in 2022, the Serbia international has struggled to truly replicate his Fiorentina form, albeit whilst the Italian giants continue to rebuild.

He earns more than Ndiaye: Everton must axe Thelwell's "disaster" signing

valuation his valuaiton crashing down to just £25m, Vlahovic could now emerge to become the bargain of the summer, especially if he went on to rediscover his most clinical form.

Still just 25 years old, the forward is certainly a player worth taking a gamble on and someone who is still more than capable of adding to his tally of 120-career goals.

"Strong" Vlahovic would be an instant upgrade

If Everton were to shock the rest of Europe by landing a player of Vlahovic’s calibre then there’s no doubt that he would be an instant upgrade on Moyes’ current options. In one summer swoop, Juventus’ trash can become the Toffees’ treasure and the goalscorer that they’ve been crying out for since Calvert-Lewin’s form became suffocated by injury struggles.

Even though he’s not the first choice in Turin, Vlahovic has still been at the centre of Thiago Motta’s praise in recent weeks. The Juventus manager told reporters at the end of last month: “He plays because he deserves it. We have an extraordinary relationship.

“He has a strong character and mentality. Today, he showed great professionalism and helped his teammates. It’s easy to manage a champion like him.”

With 14 goals to his name in all competitions so far this season, it would be easy to argue that the forward has been hard done by at times this season. Alas, if his talents aren’t appreciated at Juventus, then it could be Everton who are left to take full advantage this summer.

Asia Cup 2023 set to be played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka

The PCB’s proposed hybrid model for the Asia Cup is likely to be approved by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), with Sri Lanka as the neutral venue where India can play their games. The model sees four – and possibly five – of the tournament’s 13 games being played in Pakistan. All the India-Pakistan games will be played in Sri Lanka, as will the final if India is involved.ESPNcricinfo understands an official announcement is likely after the weekend. The window set aside for the tournament currently is between September 1-17. For the Pakistan leg, the games are likely to be played in Lahore. The likely approval represents a significant breakthrough in an impasse which has not only dragged on for some time but has also threatened fallout for ICC events, most pressingly the World Cup in India this year but also the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. There is a possibility now that an agreement here could ease Pakistan’s path to traveling to India for the World Cup.The hybrid model was proposed as a solution due to India and Pakistan unwilling to travel to the other’s country. India’s refusal to tour Pakistan prompted Pakistan to go with this model in order to retain the hosting rights.Pakistan initially offered UAE as a second venue citing the lucrative opportunity for gate receipts during Pakistan-India matches in the tournament, but Bangladesh raised concerns over the extreme weather in the middle east in September. The PCB head Najam Sethi had presented details of the hybrid model to Pankaj Khimji, head of Oman Cricket and the ACC’s vice-president, in a meeting in Dubai a couple of weeks ago. It was the solution the PCB had proposed to account for the fact that India will not travel to Pakistan for the tournament because of ongoing political tensions between the governments of the two countries. Those political ties have led to a long and cumbersome path to this solution – the PCB, as appointed hosts, have been keen to ensure that at least part of the tournament is played in Pakistan. The UAE was in the running as a neutral venue, and Sri Lanka was keen to host the entire tournament. At one stage the BCB and SLC had said no to a hybrid model.India and Pakistan have been grouped together along with Nepal in the six-nation Asia Cup, scheduled to be held in the 50-over format as preparation for the World Cup. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are in the other group.A total of 13 matches, including the final, are expected be played across 13 days. Like the format from 2022, it is expected that the top two teams from each group will advance to a Super 4s round, before the top two teams from that contest the final. That leaves open the possibility of India and Pakistan playing each other three times, should they make the final.

The 2023 ODI World Cup schedule will undergo a few changes, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has confirmed, with the revised version to be finalised in consultation with the ICC in a few days.Shah’s statement came after it emerged this week that the BCCI was looking at moving the India vs Pakistan fixture in Ahmedabad from October 15 to 14. While Shah did not reveal whether the India-Pakistan date was one of the changes, he did say that boards of several other countries had written to the BCCI pointing out logistical challenges their teams would face, thus requesting changes. He did not name the teams, though.”There is a possibility there could be few changes in the schedule” Shah said after a BCCI meeting in Delhi on Thursday. “Several Full Member countries have written in requesting to change two or three dates in the schedule. We are working out with the ICC, and we should be able to clear it in two or three days.”Related

India vs Pakistan could be rescheduled

The primary reason for the BCCI considering bringing forward the India-Pakistan fixture by a day was because local police had raised concerns over providing adequate security on October 15, which is also the first day of Navratri, a nine-day Hindu festival.Shah, however, categorically dismissed that as the reason. “If security was an issue then why would the match go there (to Ahmedabad). [October] 14-15 is not the problem. Two or three boards have written in, asking to change based on the logistical challenges. There are some matches where there is only a two-day gap, so it will be difficult to play and then travel next day [and then play again].”Shah said the venues of matches would remain the same in the revised schedule, but the gaps between games would be adjusted. “As far as possible, we are looking at not changing the venue as well as the matches. Not changing the venue is very important. Teams which have six-day gaps between matches, we are trying to reduce it to four-five days; and those that have just two-day gaps, we are trying to increase to three days.”The World Cup schedule was released exactly a month ago, which itself was a severe delay compared to the previous two World Cups where the schedule was released at least a year in advance. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 5, with reigning champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad, but the ICC and the BCCI have not yet announced when the tickets will go on sale.Shah said the ticketing process for the World Cup – the pricing and the platform – will be announced next week in coordination with the ICC.

Yamal had a sensational season for club and country, scoring 21 goals and chipping in with a whopping 25 assists in 62 games. He showed incredible quality in the Champions League knockout games, and played a starring role for the Catalans as they beat arch-rivals Real Madrid to the La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de Espana trophies.

Dembele, meanwhile, enjoyed his best season to date, scoring 33 goals in 49 games while playing in a new false nine role under PSG head coach Luis Enrique. The Frenchman was awarded the Champions League Player of the Season award for his immense contributions that helped Les Parisiens end their quest for a maiden UCL title. Both players have been hailed by the press, pundits, and players and have become the frontrunners to win the Ballon d'Or this year.

WHAT GERARD PIQUE SAID

Speaking at the event this week (h/t MARCA), Pique said: "I played with both of them (Dembele and Yamal). I had the opportunity to share a dressing room with Ousmane and Lamine. They're both incredible people. I love them both very much. Ousmane was like a brother to me because, when he arrived, you already know what he's like. "I would prefer Lamine because he's now at Barca and also in the King's League. He has a team, so I would like Lamine to win it. He's very, very young, very talented, and I think he's very special. But I also really like Ousmane, and if he wins it in the end, I'll be happy for him."
