Wolves reach agreement to sign deadline-busting £17m+ Lemina replacement

Looking to beat the clock ahead of the deadline, Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly agreed a deal to sign a midfielder who could replace Mario Lemina in a deal worth over £17m.

Wolves transfer news

Whether the headlines have named Axel Disasi, Kevin Danso or Coady, it’s been no secret that Wolves have been after another central defender ever since welcoming Emmanuel Agbadou at the beginning of the window. Up until the deadline, the Midlands club have faced more and more frustration, however, with Danso eventually choosing Tottenham Hotspur, Disasi seemingly closer to Aston Villa and Coady off the table.

In pursuit of Premier League survival, Vitor Pereira’s side have a matter of hours left until the window slams shut and they’re denied the chance to welcome what would be a crucial addition. It’s not just potential incomings taking place at Molineux either, with Mario Lemina also threatening to steal the headlines on the exit front and reportedly closing in on an exit to join Galatasaray.

As the former captain departs, he could yet finally make room for a fresh arrival though. According to Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna, Wolves have now reached an agreement to sign Marshall Munetsi having initially opned talks with Stade de Reims in pursuit of the defender.

In a deal set to be worth over €20m (£17m), Wolves are reportedly confident that they’ll get the reinforcement that the so desperarely need. At 28 years old, the experienced Reims defender represents an option who should need little time to make his mark and develop into a viable option for Pereira in the remainder of his side’s campaign.

Munetsi can reunite with Agbadou

In one January swoop, Wolves could end the window with two players who already know each other well in Munetsi and Agbadou, who played together at Reims this season. Replacing Lemina at the same time, the 28-year-old will be looking to make an instant impact and build on what has been an impressive campaign at times.

As the stats show, Munetsi should also provide more of an attacking threat than Lemina in what should be a boost for Pereira’s side in the face of Jorgen Strand-Larsen’s recent injury.

The midfielder may not be the end of Wolves’ business just yet either, given their aforementioned need for another central defender. Just who that will be remains to be seen, however.

For now, the Midlands club are at least on course to welcome a much-needed replacement for Lemina as he heads to Galatasaray. All being well, Wolves will hope to have their new signing on show as soon as their next Premier League clash – a difficult trip to Anfield to face league leaders Liverpool.

Rehan Ahmed could become youngest man to play a Test for England after call-up for Pakistan tour

Rehan Ahmed, the 18-year-old legspinning allrounder from Leicestershire, has officially been added to England’s Test squad for the tour of Pakistan.Ahmed, who has just three first-class appearances to his name, was originally due to travel to Pakistan as a net bowler, with the ECB taking a view in October that the experience would benefit one of the most exciting young talents in English cricket. Now, following an intense period of training with England Lions in the UAE, culminating in a warm-up match in Abu Dhabi against the Test side, he will tour in a more official capacity. He was informed of his promotion to the full squad by Test coach Brendon McCullum at tea on first day of the fixture at Tolerance Oval, in which he bowled eight wicketless overs for 73 runs but took an excellent catch to remove Will Jacks, back-pedalling from cover, off the bowling of Dan Lawrence. If selected, Ahmed, born on August 13, 2004, would become England men’s youngest-ever debutant, beating Brian Close’s 18 years and 149 days when he was picked for a Test against New Zealand in 1949. He would also be the first Leicestershire cricketer capped by the national team since August 2011, when James Taylor made his ODI debut.”We know he’s not the finished article and has raw potential,” McCullum said on Ahmed’s selection. “But Ben [Stokes], myself and the rest of the coaches like how he approaches his game. The experience of being part of the squad in Pakistan will be hugely beneficial for him, and he will add to the make-up of our squad.”Rehan Ahmed has only played three first-class games but already has a hundred and a five-for•Getty Images

The call-up is yet another big step for Ahmed in what has been a remarkable 18 months. His first taste of professional cricket came in 2021’s Royal London Cup, where he took five wickets in seven matches and, more impressively, averaged 44.50 with the bat. Then came a star-turn at the Under-19 World Cup with 12 dismissals in England’s run to the final where they were beaten by India. He then capped off the end of the 2022 summer with a maiden first-class century and five-wicket haul against Derbyshire (112 and 5 for 114), underlining the quality he can offer in both disciplines. He was originally due to take part in the Pakistan Junior League – an Under-19 offshoot of the Pakistan Super League – but was pulled from the competition by the ECB when they decided to utilise him in the winter. With other franchise offers on the table, England have been proactive in steering him towards red-ball cricket – all the more necessary given a dearth of spin options in the longest format. He will offer an alternative to the part-time spin of Liam Livingstone and Will Jacks, and gives England cover in the event they come across turning pitches in Pakistan given Jack Leach was the only frontline spinner picked in the original squad of 15.Related

While the tour of Pakistan is historic for England given it is 17 years since they last toured the country for a Test series, it will be equally significant for Ahmed.”My dad is from Pakistan and I have family there, so I’ve been a few times,” Ahmed told ESPNcricinfo in October. “We’re from a place called Mirpur. Whenever I’ve been, I’ll go to the stadium and train and you’ll have a load of bowlers ready to bowl to you, and a load of batters ready to bat.”Every time I’ve been, it’s always been great: the way they look after you there is crazy. It would mean the world to represent England in Pakistan. It would be great.”

Mbappe has inherited the No.9 shirt that CR7 once wore in Madrid, while also being moved into a central striking berth. His reputation as one of the most fearsome forwards on the planet was, however, forged while operating on the left flank for club and country.

WHAT JORGE SAMPAOLI SAID

Former Ligue 1 rival Jorge Sampaoli, who has spent time in France coaching at Marseille and Rennes, has told of why Mbappe cannot be likened to Argentine GOAT Lionel Messi: “We were talking about Lamine [Yamal], who can be compared to Messi because he has individualism and also a connection with otherness.

“Mbappe struggles a little more. I compare him more to Cristiano, a player who is always thinking about himself and the goal. And in Paris, he was decisive on the left, as a winger in the number 9.”

Sampaoli added on why Mbappe has found the going tough at times, with a Brazilian colleague in Madrid filling his favoured attacking role: “Vinicius is at Madrid. He [Mbappe] really looks very uncomfortable, very withdrawn. He doesn't know how to attack in that position. In any case, he has scored important goals. But he is not the player I saw in France or at the World Cup in Qatar either.”

Left for £0: Spurs gem who was compared to Messi is outscoring Richarlison

Over the last couple of years, Ange Postecoglou has endured a turbulent spell as manager, kickstarting his career as Tottenham Hotspur manager with a bang, sitting top of the table after the first few weeks in 2023/24.

However, the Aussie has since struggled in periods to match the ambitions of the fanbase after his appointment, leading to criticism over his long-term future in the role.

He did lead the Lilywhites to Europa League football last season, but despite reaching the knockout stage, it looks almost impossible his side will reach the same stage through the Premier League this time around.

The club currently sit in 14th place, 13 points off a European spot with just 14 games remaining of the campaign, with the injury crisis at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium massively impacting their performances.

Regardless of the issues, questions continue to be asked of the former Celtic manager, unable to repeat the feats set by one of his predecessors in North London.

Mauricio Pochettino’s time at Spurs

Back in the summer of 2014, Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino was appointed as Spurs boss, looking to point the club in the right direction after finishing sixth in the year before his arrival.

The 52-year-old would be a huge hit with the supporters, transforming them into constant Champions League contenders, even finishing second in the 2016/17 season, just seven points off title winners Chelsea.

He would provide the fanbase with countless memories during his time in charge, from Derby Day victories to leading them to a Champions League final in the 2018/19 campaign – losing to Liverpool in the final.

However, he would receive the sack just a couple of months after the defeat, losing his job after a poor start to the league campaign the following season.

Nearly six years on from his dismissal, it remains to be seen whether the decision to part ways with the manager was the right one, with the club yet to hit the heights he achieved since leaving.

He also tipped one player to be a star during his time in North London, with the club potentially ruing his departure given his form since leaving the Lilywhites.

The former Spurs star who’s outscoring Richarlison

Brazilian striker Richarlison joined the club after Pochettino’s departure, costing £60m in the summer of 2022, moving from Everton will real expectations of transforming the club’s attack.

Richarlison injured for Tottenham

He’s struggled to nail down a regular starter role, with the 27-year-old also one of the players recently hit with injury, limiting him to just three goals in his 14 appearances in 2024/25.

He could’ve been aided in his attempts within the final third had the club kept hold of youngster Marcus Edwards, who was once seen as a talent with huge potential in North London.

The winger, who was once compared to Lionel Messi, came through the club’s academy after joining as an eight-year-old but struggled to break into the first-team, making just one senior appearance for his boyhood side.

He would subsequently depart on a free transfer at the end of his contract, joining Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes in the summer of 2019 – a move that would ignite his professional career.

Former Vitoria star Marcus Edwards.

He featured nearly 100 times, before moving to Sporting Lisbon in January 2022, starring under Ruben Amorim, leading to rumours linking him to some of the biggest teams in Europe.

However, he’s been starved of game time in 2024/25, dropping down to the Championship and joining Scott Parker’s Burnley on loan for the rest of the season.

Despite his lack of minutes over the last couple of months, the Englishman has still managed to score four times – a tally one higher than Richarlison, showcasing his quality when having the opportunity to feature.

Whilst he may now be featuring in England’s second tier, the 26-year-old is a player who is way better than the level he’s playing at, but he’s in desperate need of valuable minutes to continue his progression.

Given the club’s current injury situation, he would’ve provided a valuable option in the final third, especially considering how he’s outperformed Richarlison so far in 2024/25.

Injury scare for Rohit Sharma during nets ahead of the semi-final against England

He was struck on the forearm by a throwdown specialist but came back to bat after a while

Sidharth Monga08-Nov-20220:44

WATCH: Rohit struck on forearm during nets ahead of semi-final

What was expected to be an uneventful day at India’s optional training session turned out to be a hectic day at work with their captain Rohit Sharma in an injury scare. When facing throwdowns from one of three specialists that India use, Rohit was hit on the forearm, looked in pain, gave up batting, but ended the session on a positive note with a decent hit, which did begin gingerly.India batters like to bat against the dog-thrower because of the extreme pace it generates, which prepares them to face high pace out in the middle. They give credit to these throwdowns for having improved their reaction times against high pace. However, this particular ball just nipped back in and hit Rohit on the right forearm.Related

It looked like a nasty blow from how Rohit first reacted. He looked in pain, and received immediate medical attention. After about five minutes or so, he gloved up again to see how the hand is feeling, but played just one ball and walked off.On the sidelines, Rohit sat with a big icepack on his arm. Mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton had a long chat with him. D Raghavendra, the throwdown specialist, looked distraught. However about 45 minutes or so later, Rohit went back into the nets. He started off carefully, just defending a few easy throwdowns to get the sensation back in the arm, and then went on to bat normally. Even against Raghavendra’s throwdowns. At the end of the session, Rohit had a chat with Raghavendra, which seemed to put the support staff member at ease. With one more training session before the semi-final against England, the cause for concern around Rohit is low.Rohit receives medical attention after being hit on the forearm•AFP/Getty ImagesThe other interesting part of the optional session was the time Dinesh Karthik spent batting. He and Hardik Pandya were the only other members of the squad who chose to make use of the training session.Karthik was not played in India’s last league match because India wanted to give Rishabh Pant some time in the middle especially looking at the spinners left in the tournament. Five of the six remaining spinners – Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi and Adil Rashid – take the ball away from right-hand batters. Keeping that in mind, there has been some thought around keeping Pant ready should India play him. Previously India have promoted Axar Patel to try to get a right-left combination going when spinners are operating. However, if India do go for Pant, they might have to push Hardik Pandya down the order to No. 6 because Karthik is the only specialist batter India have who can just walk in and score quickly. Pandya used to do that job for Mumbai Indians earlier, but this year he has been playing more like a long-innings middle-order batter who likes to get in before starting hitting. Also in the semi-final, India might come against an offspinner as well in Moeen Ali. That tips the scales in favour of Karthik a little. India’s team management did say that Pant playing the last match didn’t mean Karthik was out of favour. His having a long hit might suggest he is very much in the picture for England.”Sometimes it gives us the opportunity keeping obviously this game in mind but just keeping the future in mind, as well, just opening up our options,” coach Rahul Dravid had said after the last match. “I think everyone is available for selections; just because somebody missed out on this game doesn’t mean that we can’t go back to him and we can’t decide on… we might go the same way. We might go a different way as well.”

Better than Dunne: Sheffield United ready deadline day bid for £35k-p/w ace

Sheffield United have been extremely busy this transfer window to date as Chris Wilder goes about adding more quality here and there to his Blades ranks to make their promotion dreams a reality.

Already this window, the South Yorkshire side have obtained the services of Tom Cannon and Ben Brereton Diaz in attack, whilst Hamza Choudhury and Harry Clarke have also joined as loan bodies to help out the promotion chasers at the back.

More defensive additions could well be on the menu as we head towards the dramatic window finally slamming shut, as a new face begins to be linked with a move to Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United's search for a centre-back

As per an exclusive report by the Sheffield Star, the Championship side are now set to launch an official bid for Millwall defender Japhet Tanganga, as the club’s desperate search for some fresh blood in the centre-back department drags on.

Indeed, United look to be seeking out Tanganga’s signature now with no movement on Queens Park Rangers’ end over a deal for centre-back star Jimmy Dunne, with QPR boldly wanting £3m out of the Blades to land the 27-year-old.

Japhet Tanganga for Millwall.

Whilst not winning a deal for Dunne would be a blow, Tanganga would be more than an apt body to get in to soften this disappointment, with the ex-Tottenham Hotspur man a colossus at the Den this campaign so far.

How Tanganga compares to Jimmy Dunne

Much like the Irishman, the London-born defender has been a rock at the back for the Lions in second-tier action.

Last time out against Dunne’s Hoops, Tanganga more than showed off his imposing aerial prowess with a stunning nine duels won as Alex Neil’s men got the better of Marti Cifuentes’ visitors in a tight 2-1 win.

This ability to get stuck in and be a brute would make Tanganga an ideal Harry Souttar replacement, who is now out for the season with a serious injury, leading to the Blades scrambling about for some new bodies at the back.

But, as can be seen with this smart finish earlier in the campaign against Leeds United, the £35k-per-week Millwall man would also be able to chip in with a goal here and there to boost his side’s firepower, with Wilder known to love his defensive titans to be able to fire home goals at a moment’s notice alongside being attritional.

Whilst the table above proves that Dunne could offer that similar ability in spades, there would be a risk attached in attempting to get the QPR ace through the door with a wild £3m price tag above his head, on top of the fact he had to sit out that last league match versus Millwall owing to an alleged injury.

Whereas, with Tanganga – who has a lower valuation of £1.4m according to Transfermarkt – you have a more realistic late swoop that could be pulled off, with the 25-year-old also boasting more clean sheets in Championship action this season at 11, contrasted next to Dunne’s seven.

With Premier League pedigree also in his tank, Wilder will view landing the “outstanding” star – as he was once labelled by Gabby Agbonlahor – as a signing that would be able to acclimatise to the pressures of the league above well if promotion is sealed, as the second tier high-flyers continue to be busy right until 11pm hits.

Arsenal are making real headway in their move for a summer transfer target as they look to pre-agree a deal, even if talks are far from done, as it is believed they’ve already agreed loose contract terms.

Arsenal's summer transfer plans amid injury crisis

With both Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus out for the rest of this season, manager Mikel Arteta’s lack of depth in the attacking areas has been seriously exposed, especially when factoring Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka’s injuries as well.

Sterling, who signed from Chelsea on loan last summer, has been slammed for his sub-par performances – with critics urging the Englishman to do more as Arsenal become in dire need of a vocal point up front.

“It’s been evident since his move to Arsenal that there are a few concerns in the background,” said ex-Premier League scout Mick Brown to Football Insider.

“Firstly, he hasn’t been playing regularly, which always raises questions about why because Arteta thought he could get the best out of him.

“But when he has played, he’s been well below the level expected and required of him in that team. It may well be that he’s gone over the top fitness-wise and in terms of the stage of his career.

“His performance levels have been frightening really, and he needs to step up at this stage of the season because otherwise who knows where he’ll end up.”

Based off his outings this season, it appears unlikely they will pursue a permanent deal for Sterling, with Arsenal targeting new attacking options ahead of next season.

Jorginho and Thomas Partey are also out of contract at the end of 2024/2025, meaning Arsenal need to bring in a elite-level midfielder in their stead.

Arsenal agree "broad" personal terms with Martin Zubimendi

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, as reliably reported, is a serious target for Arteta in this regard.

Arsenal have been attempting to agree a pre-summer deal for Zubimendi since January, with the Spaniard’s contract also containing a £51 million release clause, which means the Gunners can bypass Sociedad transfer talks and head straight to the player.

According to TEAMtalk and journalist Ben Jacobs, who share another update on Arteta’s pursuit of the 26-year-old, Arsenal are in advanced talks with Zubimendi and “broad” contract terms have been “verbally” agreed.

However, while Arsenal are moving forward in negotiations, it is far from done or formal at this stage, and there is still time for fellow interested clubs to come in and hijack a move.

So, they’re approaching this move with cautious optimism, as hurdles like agents fees, taxes on the release clause, Zubimendi’s own stance and the fact a deal is not finalised yet still stand in the way.

Aston Villa stepping up chase to sign £42m sensation now outscoring Watkins

In a move that would replace Jhon Duran, Aston Villa are now reportedly stepping up their chase to sign a £42m striker who’s outscored Ollie Watkins so far this season.

Aston Villa transfer news

After a blockbuster January transfer window saw the likes of Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio arrive on loan, Aston Villa looked destined to take the top four race by storm, but defeat against Crystal Palace has since stopped them in their tracks. It wasn’t just any defeat, either. The manner in which Unai Emery’s side were brushed aside should concern the Spaniard, who watched on as Palace earned a 4-1 victory.

It’s a game which could have been ready-made for Duran to step off the bench and change for the Villans, begging the question as to whether those in the Midlands need to invest in a replacement for their former super-sub.

When the summer arrives, those at Villa Park should certainly have money to spend after opting for loan moves rather than permanent buys in the January transfer window, and that could yet see one star man arrive.

According to Caught Offside, Aston Villa are now stepping up their chase to sign Samu Omorodion Aghehowa from Porto, who valued their forward at €50m (£42m) this summer.

"Decisive" Aston Villa ace an early doubt to face Cardiff after injury blow

More frustration for Emery…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 26, 2025

Amid interest from West Ham United and Chelsea, Villa certainly have a battle on their hands if they want to secure their Duran replacement and a player who would complete their attack once again.

At just 20 years old, Aghehowa has been one of the signings of the season at Porto, having arrived from Atletico Madrid for a reported £12.7m before the season got underway. Stealing headline after headline ever since, Samu could now be on the move once again in the coming months.

"Powerhouse" Samu can compete with Watkins

Just as Duran did, Samu would push Watkins all the way for a starting place at Villa Park. As goalscorers go, there haven’t been many better than the Porto star this season. Not even Watkins, himself, boasts a better record than Aghehowa’s 19 goals in all competitions throughout the current campaign – highlighting just how clinical he has been.

Dubbed an “absolute powerhouse” by analyst Ben Mattinson earlier this season, Samu would offer Emery an ideal alternative than the more creative and neat Watkins.

In games such as Villa’s thrashing at the hands of Palace, an alternative option can make all the difference as Emery should be well aware of from Duran’s impact before his January exit.

Replacing that impact could be the key to unlocking Champions League football once again next season. As the fixtures come thick and fast, competition between Watkins and a pure goalscorer would be no bad thing.

For just £42m, those at Villa Park would be wise to make their move and secure Omorodion’s signature sooner rather than later.

Drama at MCG as Adam Zampa's run-out attempt against Tom Rogers is turned down

It was ruled not out because Zampa had turned his arm over before taking the bails off, but he says he wasn’t sure he would have withdrawn the appeal had it stood

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jan-2023There was an incident of a bowler – Adam Zampa – attempting to run the non-striker – Tom Rogers – out backing up during the Melbourne derby in the BBL on Tuesday. However, Stars bowler Zampa had turned his arm over before stopping and whipping the bails off, so even though Rogers was outside his crease, it wasn’t out. And though David Hussey, the Stars coach, said “we would have withdrawn the appeal” had it been given out, Zampa himself wasn’t too sure about it.Zampa, in fact, stressed that he “saw red a little bit” when Rogers rushed out before he had delivered the previous ball, the fourth of the final over of Renegades’ innings.

“Running out of the crease before I bowled it, to his advantage; I bowled a good ball to Mackenzie Harvey [the batter on strike], which probably should have been one if he [Rogers] hadn’t done that. So, I guess, he used that to his advantage. So I thought, that ball, if he doesn’t want to be on strike, then I’ll make it a little bit easier for him,” Zampa said on the official broadcast after the game, which Stars lost by 33 runs, with Rogers starring with the ball for Renegades with a five-wicket haul.Related

Why is there stigma involved in running out a non-striker? Because it's all about power

He couldn’t, because he didn’t quite know the rule: once the bowler’s arm has passed the point at which he is normally expected to release the ball, or the highest point in the delivery action, the non-striker can leave the crease without worrying about being run-out.”If you haven’t let the ball go, then… I had assumed that the batter still has to be in the crease,” Zampa said. “But apparently if you finish your action and they can assume you have bowled the ball, then they are allowed to leave the crease.

“I am not sure what decision I would have [gone] with once the ruling had been made, but basically, straightaway Gerard (Abood, the umpire) said, ‘you finish your action, I don’t think it’s out’. So it didn’t matter. As soon as Gerard said that I knew it wouldn’t be out, because I knew how far my arm had come over. Gerard said, ‘if your arm comes all the way over, and he can assume you have bowled the ball, then you can’t do that’. So straightaway, I was like, ‘yeah, that’s not out’.”The replays confirmed that Zampa’s bowling arm had reached the highest point, and crossed it, before he stopped, turned around, and took the bails off, with Rogers well outside the crease.”I was probably staying in my crease a little bit longer than I have in the past,” Rogers said. “So I thought I was going to be okay. But yeah, I am not too sure about it. But the umpires are doing a good job, and thankfully gave it not out.”It gets a bit murky, doesn’t it? Someone gets halfway down the wicket, everyone won’t be too happy about it. But not really. Hopefully it all settles down and washes away in the next couple of months, by the end of the cricket season here.”

“It’s not a warning. I’m a very competitive guy, so, yeah, I guess I saw red a little bit when, as I said, he used that to his advantage. I guess in that situation again, I’m not saying I won’t do it”Adam Zampa

Asked about Hussey’s statement, where he said, “It was more of a warning for the batter not to leave too early”, Zampa said that he wasn’t sure he saw it the same way.”It’s not a warning. I’m a very competitive guy, so, yeah, I guess I saw red a little bit when, as I said, he used that to his advantage,” Zampa said. “I guess in that situation again, I’m not saying I won’t do it. It’s late in the innings, it’s like two balls left, I know even if I Mankad someone and run him out, then they still have three [two] wickets in hand, Mackenzie Harvey’s on strike, so it doesn’t make that much difference to the game.”Tenth over of the game, if they try to pinch ground, it’s probably more of a warning. Even if I had got my technique right, my Mankad technique right, and Gerard said that’s probably going to be out, I don’t know what decision I would have come to.”Whether the incident was the reason or not, Rogers was certainly pumped up when Stars began their chase of Renegades’ 141 for 7. By the end of the third over, he had sent Joe Clarke, his namesake Thomas Rogers, and Beau Webster back. Not long after, he had Hilton Cartwright’s number. And later in the chase, he got rid of Luke Wood to record 5 for 16, his best in T20s.”I don’t know if I fired him up, but he was the pick of the bowlers tonight,” Zampa conceded. He also “didn’t even notice” when the MCG crowd booed him, countering, “I think I was well within my right to do it. It’s in the rulebook. As you saw, I just got my technique wrong. He was always halfway down the wicket. It’s in the rulebook.”
