Lost the ball every 3.4 touches: Lopetegui must now drop 5/10 West Ham star

West Ham United’s torrid start to the season continued on Saturday afternoon after a 1-1 draw away to Brentford. It was a frustrating day for the Hammers, who went 1-0 down inside the first minute. That goal meant the Bees became the first side in Premier League history to score in the first minute of a game three games in a row.

After Bryan Mbeumo’s early strike, a superb volley from inside the penalty box, it became a more even affair, but it took the Hammers until the 54th minute to draw level, thanks to Tomas Soucek. West Ham managed to hold onto a point despite late Brentford pressure.

For Julen Lopetegui’s side, they simply cannot catch a break this term. The East London outfit have still managed just one win from their opening six games, having lost three of those and drawing the other two. They currently sit in 14th place in the table, on just five points and with a minus-four goal difference.

It was a far-from-ideal performance once more from the Hammers, and, rather disappointingly, some of their biggest names are struggling to find their best form this season. That was certainly a theme against Brentford on Saturday.

West Ham’s big stars struggle

It was an important summer window at the London Stadium, with West Ham making some big-name attacking signings, including Niclas Fullkrug and Crycensio Summerville, to add to the firepower they already possessed in attacking areas.

Crysencio Summerville for West Ham

Despite having 19 shots at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, as per Sofascore, the Hammers had three of those on target. Worryingly, they had an expected goals tally of less than one, with a remarkably low 0.73xG. Given the number of shots they had, the chances they created were not really substantial at all.

West Ham’s big-name duo of Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus did not perform to their usual standards against the Bees. Both were substituted, with the Ghanaian attacker brought off at halftime, although Bowen was replaced by Andy Iriving in the 92nd minute.

Kudus failed to create a chance, and although the West Ham skipper managed three, he had an expected assists total of just 0.16xA. Between them, they lost the ball 33 times, with Kudus losing possession on 11 occasions and the England international 22.

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen

Despite their poor performances, neither attacker was arguably West Ham’s worst player, with their fellow big-name star, Lucas Paqueta, also struggling against Brentford.

Paqueta’s stats vs. Brentford

It has not been the best start to the season for Brazil international Paqueta. He has now scored just one goal and is yet to register an assist this season, despite having started all but one of the Hammers’ Premier League games.

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta

Against Brentford, it was very much a similar story for the former Olympique Lyon midfielder. Like Bowen and Kudus, the 27-year-old was also substituted against Thomas Frank’s side, being replaced by Summerville on the 76-minute mark.

His stats suggest that it was not an unjustifiable change from Lopetegui, with the normally superb Brazilian struggling to retain the ball. Paqueta, who had 58 touches, had a pass accuracy of just 78% and lost the ball 17 times. That worked out at an average of squandering possession once every 3.4 touches of the ball.

Paqueta’s disappointing performance earned him a rating of just 5/10 from The Standard journalist Dom Smith. He explained that the Brazilian ‘struggled to make an impact’ on the game, before seemingly complaining about Lopetegui’s decision to substitute him.

The Hammers will no doubt be hoping their big stars can get back to their best, as they look to turn around this bout of poor early-season form.

Cost £8m, now he’s unemployed: Bilic made a mistake signing West Brom flop

Carlos Corberan will know all too well, from West Bromwich Albion’s summer transfer activity, the disappointment that comes with losing a star player for nothing.

Cedric Kipre walked away from the Hawthorns for zilch this off-season, having been an imposing presence at the back for the promotion chasers during the 2023/24 campaign, but both Kyle Bartley and Semi Ajayi have managed to step up to the mark in his absence so far this Championship campaign.

Going the other way, there are other instances where losing a player for nothing is actually a benefit, with the individual in question, unfortunately, becoming a flop that needs to be taken off the roster.

Kenneth Zohore certainly fits into that latter category, with the Danish striker costing the Baggies an obscene amount to land in 2019, only for the ex-Cardiff City man to struggle throughout his cursed stay in the West Midlands.

Zohore's time at West Brom

There will have been some doubters from the get-go when Zohore penned a bumper deal to move to West Brom, having not exactly been an unbelievable goal machine when lining up for Cardiff prior to making the switch.

The Danish striker would only find the back of the net an underwhelming 24 times from 101 total clashes for the Bluebirds, with many left wondering why West Brom – then managed by Slaven Bilic – had forked out £8m to win his services as a result.

Zohore was prone to a purple patch in front of goal in the Welsh capital from time to time, but eyebrows were rightly raised about why the second-tier side decided to splash the cash on an attacker once described as being “lazy” by outspoken former Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock.

The Scandinavian forward would just never settle at West Brom, with the towering 6 foot 2 striker only registering a lacklustre five goals from 23 appearances, before finding his contract had been torn up in 2023.

It’s not been any easier for the now 30-year-old attacker since his Baggies exit, with the former Denmark U21 international now unemployed after more goal-shy spells.

Zohore's numbers since leaving West Brom

Zohore ended up relocating over to Poland in the wake of being pushed out to West Brom, lining up for Slask Wroclaw in a bid to breathe life back into his stuttering playing days.

Yet, his time playing in the Ekstraklasa proved to be even more damaging than his spell in the Premier League, with Wroclaw also releasing the 30-year-old – who remains without a club – earlier this year after he continually fired blanks.

Zohore would never end up breaking his goalscoring duck whilst playing for Wroclaw, with the frustrated attacker even demoted to the reserves during his brief but damaging stint at the club.

Whilst West Brom have messed up in the transfer market previously, Corberan and Co did get a lot of deals right in the last window, especially with the phenomenal deal to gain Mikey Johnston back on a permanent basis.

Mikey Johnston

Helping himself to an immense seven goals from just 18 games whilst out on loan last season, West Brom managed to win him back for good for just £3m, £5m less than Bilic and co forked out to land Zohore in what now goes down as a major blunder.

Corberan won’t want to have any similar misfires moving forward if the Baggies taste promotion up to the Premier League, as the West Midlands side aim to continue operating effectively, instead of splashing cash rashly.

Pulis thought West Brom had signed a big "coup", now he's without a club

West Bromwich Albion supporters will have forgotten about this dud.

Bavuma: Boucher has provided 'clarity and context' regarding discrimination allegations

South Africa head coach Mark Boucher has addressed the national team to explain the accusations made against him by former team-mates at the Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) hearings. Boucher, along with other players from the 1990s and early 2000s, has been named in several testimonies alleging racial discrimination and an exclusionary team culture and has provided the SJN with a written response. He is also expected to make a public statement and has already explained himself to the team, who have been affected by the SJN proceedings.”I’d be lying if I said it didn’t have an impact on us as a team. It’s publicly known that members of the team have been named in the testimonies. Our coach, Mark Boucher has addressed us as a team, speaking to the accusations against him,” Temba Bavuma, South Africa’s white-ball captain, said. “He provided clarity and context and it was more about keeping the guys in his confidence and comfort. As much as we operate as a team and we try to control everything that is in our circle, those matters do come within the team and it’s important that we deal with it internally and ask whatever hard questions that we need to ask of each other to make sure we can keep growing within the team.”Related

Bavuma said members of the current squad support the SJN initiative and hope to use what they have heard to ensure the divisiveness of the past is not repeated. “The large majority of the guys welcome the initiative of the SJN and understand its necessity in terms of allowing current and former guys to speak about their experiences in the past and for us effectively to be ale to learn from those experiences and those mistakes by certain individuals which can help us pave the way forward,” Bavuma said. “That’s what we’ve taken out of it as players. As players now, in this era, we have got an opportunity to shape the environment, to shape the team, in the way that we would like so that down the line we don’t look back and say we could have done things in a different way. Most of the guys are following the SJN and we look forward to the good of it that is happening.”The SJN will continue throughout South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka, with those who have been adversely implicated due to respond in the coming weeks. Chief among the allegations are that of an overpowering clique of white players and a toxic team culture, which the likes of Roger Telemachus, Paul Adams, Loots Bosman and Ashwell Prince, all spoke about. While Bavuma acknowledged that a poor culture may have existed before, he said the South African team is much more unified now and also more welcoming to new players.”In 2021, things are very different to the early 2000s. – whether you look at it from an exclusivity point of view or whether you look at it in terms of guys walking into the team and feeing a lot more comfortable,” he said. “I can think of when I joined the team in around 2014 or so, it wasn’t a big struggle. I would really really like to think that things are different now than they were in the past. In saying that, there is always good in looking at the past and seeing how best we can do things.”Bavuma said the team would continue to keep a close eye on SJN proceedings, which will conclude when the ombudsman Dumisa Ntsebeza submits his report with recommendations for the future to CSA, and will use what they have heard to continue to work on a team culture of inclusion.”I think the biggest take for me is that you want to create an environment that allows guys to have a strong sense of belonging; that allows guys to be themselves and to express themselves,” Bavuma said. “I think there has to be that acceptance. We all have different backgrounds which in turn shapes our perspectives.”I think being able to put all of that together and have a space where guys can express themselves and their beliefs is something I’d like to leave behind within this team. It starts with having those hard conversations, [regardless of] whether those conversations stem from happenings from outside of the team. We are having those hard conversations as a team. We are putting each in uncomfortable spaces and positions of vulnerability. Not so that we can expose each other, but just to find a better way going forward.”

Injured Shardul Thakur out of Lord's Test

India will have a tough call to make between R Ashwin and a fourth seamer

Nagraj Gollapudi11-Aug-202110:06

Laxman: India should play Ashwin to add variety and strength

India have suffered a selection headache on the eve of the second Test against England with a hamstring injury ruling out Shardul Thakur. Captain Virat Kohli confirmed during his press conference on Wednesday that Thakur had a left hamstring injury and he is likely to be ready for the third Test*.Thakur arrived for training on Monday at Lord’s and spent time in the gym alongside the India physiotherapist Nitin Patel and trainer Nick Webb. Thakur, who was India’s fourth seamer during the first Test in Nottingham, picked up four wickets – two in each innings. Doubts surfaced about Thakur’s fitness when he only sent down 13 overs in England’s second innings – the fewest of India’s quicks – although he did not show any evident unease on the outside. The key question now for India is who replaces Thakur. With conditions in London forecast to be warm and dry – with temperatures in the early 20s for the entire duration of the Test – India have the choice of either picking a second spinning allrounder in R Ashwin or a fourth seamer in Ishant Sharma or Umesh Yadav, considering reverse-swing could be in play along with the seam movement and conventional swing that are usually on offer in English conditions.

At the end of the Trent Bridge Test, which ended in a rain-affected draw, Kohli said he was happy with the template India had picked, with four fast bowlers and one spin-bowling allrounder in Ravindra Jadeja. The complication with playing a fourth seamer other than Thakur, however, is it will leave India with a long tail, with no reliable lower-order contributor to be found among Ishant, Umesh, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah or Mohammed Siraj. Apart from his swing bowling, Thakur’s selection at Trent Bridge also hinged on his batting at No. 8.On Monday, at their first training session ahead of the second Test, Ashwin did not bat, but Ishant had a complete session. It was Ishant’s first time back in the nets after playing in the World Test Championship final against New Zealand in June. At Trent Bridge before and during the Test, Ishant was seen going through several fitness tests under the watch of Patel and Webb, even though insiders maintained there was no injury. On Monday, though, Ishant bowled without any concern for at least an hour and then had a long batting session, receiving throwdowns from the India batting coach Vikram Rathour.*1212 GMT, August 11, 2021: The story was updated after Virat Kohli’s press conference

Tottenham lose to Arsenal as Postecoglou bemoans set pieces

Spurs dictated overall play with the majority of possession and chances created at home, as they looked to upset a weakened Arsenal team who were without club captain Martin Odegaard, summer signing Riccardo Calafiori, Spain star Mikel Merino, Declan Rice and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

However, a resolute Arsenal side did their defensive duties and made Tottenham pay for their lack of cutting edge, with Gabriel rising above everyone else to thump a header past Guglielmo Vicario from close range.

It was an avoidable goal from Postecoglou’s perspective, who stuck up for his philosophy on defending dead balls when quizzed by the media.

“I know for some reason people think I don’t care about set-pieces, and it’s a narrative that you can keep going on for ages and ages. I understand that,” said Postecoglou on Arsenal’s winner from a corner.

“Like I said, we work on them all the time, like we do with every other team. You know that they’re a threat. As I said, for the most part we handled them really well today, but we switched off in one and we paid a price. You learn from that and you move on.

“It is what it is. It’s my burden to carry and I’m happy to do that. Like I’ve always said, for me there’s a bigger picture that’s at play here that’s much more important than the finer details of us getting to where we want to.

“For us, the way forward is to, as I said, try and turn the football we’re playing now into something meaningful. We’re a team that’s progressing in many areas. With all that sort of progress, there’s always kind of new challenges and new things that you need to overcome.”

Gabriel’s winner was the 10th time Tottenham have conceded a dead-ball goal under Postecoglou, and that is something the Australian will be very eager to change. Winger Brennan Johnson was also criticised for his display against Arsenal, so it appears there are a few conundrums for Spurs’ head coach ahead of their next matches against Coventry City in the EFL Cup and Brentford this weekend.

Tottenham offered chance to sign Adrien Rabiot just days ago

Over the weekend, Tottenham’s disappointing defeat to Arsenal wasn’t the only thing happening in north London, as it is claimed that former Juventus and PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot approached the club over a free transfer too.

That is according to The Boot Room, who claim that Rabiot was offered to Spurs via his representatives, before the Frenchman opted to return to his homeland with Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille.

Adrien Rabiot for Juventus

The 29-year-old, who featured for France at Euro 2024, has finally ended the search for his new club by putting pen to paper on a rumoured £162,000-per-week contract with the Ligue 1 side. Despite many links to the Premier League, Rabiot won’t be making an English move this season, despite his credentials.

“He is a complete player, I have rarely seen someone so strong both physically and technically,” said ex-Juve boss Andrea Pirlo in 2020. “He doesn’t even know the potential for improvement he can have, and we work on the mental side of things to make him understand that he is a champion. He is improving game after game.”

How Jemimah Rodrigues levelled up in the Hundred

Tournament’s leading run-scorer credits ignoring criticism for her upturn in form

Vishal Dikshit11-Aug-2021India and Northern Superchargers batter Jemimah Rodrigues says she handled criticism by “ignoring it” as she overcame a few “tough months” in international cricket this year to emerge as the Hundred’s leading scorer after nearly 80% of the tournament’s league matches had been played.Rodrigues started the tournament with a scintillating and unbeaten 92 off 43 balls, studded with 17 fours and a six, to script a dramatic come-from-behind win for her team, and followed it with two more half-centuries – 60 off 41 and 57 off 44 – to accumulate 241 runs in five innings, averaging 60.25 and striking at 154.48.This purple patch came after Rodrigues had been dropped from India’s T20I side in England following her single-digit scores in the two ODIs she played before that.”For me the best way to handle criticism is to ignore it, not even go online or read stuff because it’s difficult when you are doing your best and working hard, nobody knows what you’ve gone through, the tears, the heartbreaks, the sweat you’ve put out to be where you are,” Rodrigues said while commentating on on Tuesday. “And someone sitting miles away posting stuff on social media…it’s tough, and the way I handled this time to stay away from it as far as possible so I can focus on my game and be in the right head space.”Rodrigues, 20, had been one of the most promising Indian talents after making her international debut in 2018 but found herself in a rut in 2021 when cricket finally resumed for India after a year-long hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the ODIs against South Africa at home, she managed scores of 1, 9 and 0 before scoring 30 and 16 in the T20Is. In England a few months later, she played only the second and third ODIs and laboured to 8 off 15 and 4 off 21 before being benched for the T20I series. She was part of the Test squad too but missed out on a debut even as five of her team-mates were handed their maiden Test caps in Bristol.Jemimah Rodrigues is the leading run-scorer in the Hundred•Getty Images

Coming into the Hundred, she was averaging only 9.71 across seven international innings this year with a tally of 68 runs and an unimpressive strike rate of 61.26.”It’s been a rollercoaster ride for me, I’ve had ups and downs,” Rodrigues said of coping with the pressures of being an India player. “That’s what cricket is all about, it teaches you so much, changes you personally not just as a player, as a human being.”I’m still learning how to find that balance because it’s not easy. The last few months were pretty tough but it’s good to be back and somewhere it’s important to find that balance in cricket.”Rodrigues further said the one-year gap she got after the 2020 T20 World Cup final against Australia also helped her “get back to basics”.”It was very difficult [to not play for so long] and sometimes it was annoying because we’re so used to living off our suitcases, travelling, going around the world and playing cricket,” she said. “The first two months were good because we needed a break and got a lot of time to spend with our family but after that my family was also fed up asking, ‘when is Jemimah going (laughs)?’ OK, they didn’t say that.”We couldn’t wait [to play]. And after that we watched a few matches, like the England and Australia women’s teams were playing and we were like, ‘when will we get to play?’ because there were a lot of [Covid-19] cases in India so it was very tough for us to practice, to get a ground. I used to practice in my building in a small lane, with a plastic ball so that the cars wouldn’t break. So it was tough times and it taught me a lot and helped me get back to my basics.”Jemimah Rodrigues used the time she had off during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic to ‘get back to basics’•Getty Images

With the men’s IPL set to resume in the UAE next month, Rodrigues also hoped for the return of the Women’s T20 Challenge too, which is usually played around the playoffs stage.”It’s high time we start the women’s IPL (Women’s T20 Challenge),” she said. “We all are very excited for it and the BCCI is doing a lot to get it started. Hopefully this time it starts soon because it’s only going to boost women’s cricket in India, and you never know you’ll get the likes of Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh, all these players coming out. Like Shafali made her [India] debut after playing the Women’s T20 challenge. So hopefully we’ll have the Women’s T20 Challenge soon.”India have finished runners-up twice in the last three women’s global tournaments – the 2020 T20 World Cup and the 2017 ODI World Cup – and Rodrigues said it was the 50-over tournament in 2017 that made a “drastic change in women’s cricket in India”.”Things have changed a lot. After the 2017 World Cup, I personally saw a drastic change in women’s cricket in India. I used to go to a ground and there were 200 boys and I was the only girl. But now when I go there, there’s a special net only for girls right where I practice. That’s one of the most pleasing sights for me, that young girls taking up sport and parents coming up and telling ‘ (I want my daughter to play for India).’ Things have changed a lot.”

Shakib reveals Bangladesh's motivation to beat Australia

Bangladesh beat Australia in a series for the first time in their history, and then put the exclamation point on it with a 4-1 scoreline. The star of the show in the final game in Dhaka that ended with a 60-run defeat for the visitors was allrounder Shakib Al Hasan, who bagged 4 for 9. After the match, he said Bangladesh were boosted by their 2-1 win against Zimbabwe last month, and were also motivated by the fact that teams like Australia don’t play them regularly.”There is always a motivation when you play the bigger teams – normally those which don’t visit our country that often,” Shakib said in an interaction with the media on Monday. “Also, we had a really good series in Zimbabwe and so everyone was pretty motivated to do well in this series as well. We had never won a series against Australia, and so this was our chance. Hence, we wanted to deliver well as a unit, which is what happened.”With his performance, Shakib also became just the second bowler to the landmark of a hundred wickets in T20Is, joining Lasith Malinga on the list. He now sits at 102 wickets – only five away from the Sri Lankan quick – at an average of 20.83 and an economy of just 6.80.”Any such achievement obviously feels good,” Shakib said. “This kind of personal achievement inspires you to do well for your side… I am really happy, and I feel I will be able to contribute for many more days and would be striving for that.”Much of Bangladesh’s four wins was down to their performances with the ball, with the hosts defending scores of 123, 128 and 132, besides limiting Australia to 121 in the second T20I and making them work hard to chase down 106 in the fourth game. Such low totals on pitches that aided turn – and where a change of pace and cutters were always effective – even led Dan Christian to say that conditions “don’t get more difficult”.Shakib too said batting was always a challenge, and added that performances in such conditions should not be judged too harshly.”We could have perhaps scored 10 or 15 more runs in every match, since we were in situations where doing it was possible,” he said. “But the wickets were so difficult [to bat on] that it was always tough for a new batsman [to play]. So it would be unfair to judge someone on the basis of just one series because the conditions were really tough for the batsmen.”
