Jobe Bellingham future decided as Sunderland star blocking big money exit

A key update has emerged regarding the future of Sunderland hero Jobe Bellingham, with his long-term path looking decided already.

Bellingham's Sunderland future

The 18-year-old may be living in the shadow of his brother Jude Bellingham currently, considering he has moved to Real Madrid and become one of the leading players in world football, but the Black Cats ace is a top-quality young player in his own right.

Despite his tender years, Bellingham is already such a key figure at the Stadium of Light, with a tally of seven goals coming his way in the Championship last season, as well as an average of 1.3 tackles per game. That outlines what an all-round midfield presence he is, albeit in a more attack-minded role, and Sunderland will want to keep hold of him for as long as possible.

It is only natural that plenty of interest has emerged in the teenager of late, however, with a number of Premier League clubs keen on snapping him up, including Tottenham. His long-term potential is there for all to see, and even the most optimistic of Black Cats supporters will know that he won't be at the club forever.

As things stand, though, Bellingham hasn't gone anywhere, and now a significant update has dropped when it comes to how the Englishman sees his own situation.

Bellingham set to stay at Sunderland

According to a fresh claim from Il Messaggero [via Sport Witness], Bellingham's carefully planned career path is "blocking" a move to Lazio, even though the Serie A side are still interested in signing him this summer.

Instead, the 18-year-old wants to spend one more year with the Black Cats, prior to sealing a move to the Premier League (assuming they are not promoted), with the next step in his plan to play in the English top flight, rather than a move abroad like his brother.

Bellingham is frighteningly mature for his age, not only in terms of his performances for Sunderland on the pitch, but also the manner in which he is clearly looking at his future, making sure he makes the right career decisions. Black Cats fans will be understandably desperate to have another year of the teenager in their squad, especially as he could go up another gear, before accepting that they will likely lose him to a bigger club in 2025 if they do not go up.

It remains to be seen what level Bellingham can reach, in terms of emulating his sibling and becoming a genuine superstar for club and country, but him being at Sunderland will only enhance their hopes of mounting a promotion bid in the Championship next season, as Regis Le Bris looks to be an immediate hit as manager.

At this point, it would be a surprise if Bellingham moved abroad this summer, and it could now be a case of the Black Cats enjoying every minute before he eventually departs for a new challenge, unless Le Bris' side gain promotion, in which case he could even stay on.

'He knows exactly what he's doing' – Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk called out for off-the-ball shoulder charge on Newcastle's Anthony Gordon as 'point' of VAR is called into question again

Just a couple of minutes after Alexander Isak scored a world-class opening goal for Newcastle, Gordon had a golden opportunity to double his team's lead when he found himself one-on-one with Caoimhin Kelleher after outpacing Joe Gomez, however, he hit the ball straight at the Reds custodian's hand. Soon after his miss, captain Van Dijk cheekily charged the Magpies star with his shoulder inside the penalty which went unnoticed.

  • WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Fans on social media were quick to point out Van Dijk's actions as some of them questioned the credibility of VAR.

Jordan Cronin wrote on X: "Look at Virgil van Dijk here. He knows exactly what's doing. What's the point of VAR?"

A fan named Sam called the incident 'ridiculous' as he wrote, "Body check from Van Dijk goes unpunished!? Ridiculous."

Sam Nevin hinted at favouritism towards Liverpool as he wrote "Didn't realise you could just smash into players if your keeper has the ball.. oh wait, it's Liverpool"

Chris Conway too questioned the role of VAR as he wrote, "That was a cynical, deliberate shoulder into Gordon’s face from Van Dijk. VAR declines to take a look… And the point of VAR is?"

Calling out the Dutch defender's action, Michael White wrote, "Van Dijk is the most protected footballer on earth, that's pretty low from the big fella, definitely a deliberate shoulder to the head on Gordon. Obviously no action."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The visitors restored parity through Curtis Jones' brilliant strike in the 50th minute before Gordon finally found the back of the net to make it 2-1. Salah then equalised for the Reds before putting his team in the front for the first time in the game in the 83rd minute. However, Fabian Schar's late goal made sure that the Magpies walked away with at least a point.

    WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

With Chelsea securing a thumping 5-1 win over Southampton on the same night, Arne Slot's side saw their lead at the top of the Premier League table reduced to seven points. They will be next seen in action on Saturday in the Merseyside derby against arch-rivals Everton.

Forget Trippier: Dyche could land late Everton move for £12k-p/w ace

The right-back situation at Everton will be a cause for concern for Sean Dyche, with limited options available to the Toffees boss ahead of this weekend’s trip to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Ben Godfrey featured at full-back towards the end of last season, but after his departure to Atalanta earlier this summer, the club now only have a couple of options in that area of the pitch.

Ashley Young has been the most consistent figure at right-back, making 31 appearances in the Premier League during 2023/24, but made a horror start to the new campaign, picking up a red card in the opening-day defeat against Brighton.

Seamus Coleman is currently the club’s longest-serving player after arriving on Merseyside back in 2009, but the now 35-year-old has struggled with injuries over the last few campaigns, restricting him to just seven league starts last time around.

However, with just a week to go in the transfer window, Dyche may want to invest in a new talent at full-back, with another experienced option linked with a move to Goodison Park in recent days.

Everton's search for a right-back

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Everton have made contact with Newcastle United over a deal to sign 33-year-old right-back Kieran Trippier.

It comes after the England international lost his captaincy role at St James’ Park, with Trippier wanting to leave the club after being an unused substitute in the opening-day victory over Southampton last weekend.

He’s been an excellent option for the Magpies after his move from Atlético Madrid back in January 2022, helping the club reach the Champions League for the first time in over two decades.

However, he suffered an injury towards the back end of last season, looking a shadow of his former self with age starting to catch up with him – even admitting himself to a drop in his own "standards".

Any deal would likely be a loan move for Trippier, but it’s unclear how much of his £120k-per-week salary Dyche’s side would have to contribute to a deal – with the Toffees needing to explore other transfer targets, including one player who’s also previously been touted with a move to Merseyside.

Everton's ideal Trippier alternative

In recent days, Everton have been linked with a move to sign versatile talent Junior Dina Ebimbe from Eintracht Frankfurt before the end of the transfer window.

The Frenchman could be allowed to leave the Bundesliga outfit this summer, despite only joining the club on a permanent basis from PSG last summer.

With Ebimbe only being 23, he would provide a youthful option that is desperately needed in the right-back department, with his figures from last season showing why he would be a better option than Tripper for Dyche’s side.

The “fantastic” Frenchman, as described by scout Antonio Mango, may have registered slightly fewer goal contributions, but excelled with the ball at his feet, averaging more progressive carries and take-ons per 90 than Trippier.

Ebimbe, who only earns a reported £12k-per-week as per Capology, also bettered the Englishman defensively, winning more tackles per 90 alongside aerial duels – showcasing the defensive stability he can provide should he move to Goodison.

On the face of the deal, Trippier would provide experience and quality in the right-back position, but given his age, it would be a huge risk signing another player on the wrong side of 30.

Ebimbe would offer a youthful and versatile option, whilst having the potential to improve further down the line, with his abilities in and out of possession helping the Toffees at both ends of the pitch.

Big Picture
It’s been a good beginning for the Royal Challengers Bangalore to IPL 2021, winning a hard-fought encounter against defending champions Mumbai Indians on the opening day. They looked like they had the chase well in hand, before letting it slip away and needing AB de Villiers to haul it in for them. In that respect, things haven’t quite changed for the Royal Challengers, and you suspect de Villiers will still be the man they will look to as saviour, especially given the form he showed against one of the IPL’s most formidable bowling sides. The team that vies with Mumbai Indians for the title of the best bowling side are the Sunrisers Hyderabad, but their bowling was a bit off the boil in their opening encounter against the Kolkata Knight Riders, which ended in a 10-run defeat. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, fresh off a star turn in India’s white-ball series against England, was uncharacteristically expensive, going for 45 runs in four overs and only picking up a wicket with the final ball of the innings. The conditions at Chepauk have traditionally favoured spinners. In the first two games at the venue in IPL 2021 though, that’s been uneven. The ball was sticking in the surface for the opening match, but the batsmen seemed to have an easier time of it in the second game. However, what remained consistent was that the top-notch T20 bowlers continued to be tough to face, such as Rashid Khan and Jasprit Bumrah. You suspect that if a bowling group that has reasonable pedigree fires cohesively, the surface could still pose a challenge to the batsmen. In the news
The Royal Challengers are likely to welcome back Devdutt Padikkal in the playing XI. The 20-year-old left-handed opener was among their success stories in IPL 2020, and was in great form in domestic cricket before this edition too. Laid low by Covid-19, he had rejoined the team before the first game but was still advised rest for the first match. Padikkal’s return will mean Washington Sundar no longer has to play the makeshift opener’s role. Who will sit out for Padikkal will be interesting – with the choices appearing to be between Rajat Padiar and Shahbaz Ahmed. Given they are likely to have seven bowling options without Ahmed, he might be the one to sit out.The Sunrisers might also be able to have Kane Williamson available for selection, although fitting him into the XI is another issue. Williamson was pronounced not ‘match fit’ by coach Trevor Bayliss, which was why he missed out in the first game. But with Jonny Bairstow being the Sunrisers’ best batsman in the opening match – coming on the heels of a Man of the Series show against India in the T20I series – it’s unlikely that he will have to make way. Rashid Khan is of course undroppable, and Mohammad Nabi’s bowling might be of vital importance in Chennai. The Sunrisers might also want to consider whether to continue with Wriddhiman Saha as the keeper and opener or bring in a young batsman who can bat in the middle order instead among Priyam Garg, Virat Singh and Abhishek Sharma. After all, in Bairstow, they have someone who can open and keep.Likely XIs
Royal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Virat Kohli (capt), 2 Devdutt Padikkal, 3 Rajat Patidar, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 AB de Villiers (wk), 6 Daniel Christian, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Kyle Jamieson, 9 Harshal Patel, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal.Sunrisers Hyderabad: 1 David Warner (capt), 2 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 Manish Pandey, 4 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 5 Vijay Shankar, 6 Mohammad Nabi, 7 Abdul Samad, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Sandeep Sharma, 11 T NatarajanStrategy punt
Among the Royal Challengers bowlers, the ones David Warner finds toughest to score off are Washington Sundar – and Glenn Maxwell. Against both offspinners, Warner’s run-rate hovers at around seven, but against the other bowlers the Royal Challengers have, Warner is destructive. Sundar already has an acknowledged expertise at bowling in the powerplay, while Maxwell was used upfront too on occasion last year for the Kings XI Punjab. The Royal Challengers may not want to have offspin from both ends to start with, but at least one of the two could be given the new ball to try and rein Warner in.The Sunrisers’ trump card remains Rashid Khan, and they might be best served by using him in the middle, particularly if Maxwell and de Villiers are batting next to each other. Of all bowlers the Sunrisers have, only Rashid has had some measure of control against de Villiers, while he has bossed Maxwell, conceding less than a run a ball against him. He has been terrific against Kohli and Padikkal too, but if the pacers can do the job upfront for the Sunrisers, it leaves Rashid free to control the middle overs.Stats that matter
Virat Kohli is all-time leading run-getter in IPL history, while David Warner sits fourth. However, if you compare only the years in which both played, Warner has an edge on Kohli. In the years both have played the IPL, Warner has 5257 runs at an average of 42.39 and a strike rate of 141.46. Kohli, who has played 166 games to Warner’s 143 in those years, has 5216 runs at 39.21 and a strike rate of 130.82. Since Rashid Khan began playing in the IPL, in 2017, no bowler has a better economy rate than his 6.24 in the competition, even when setting a limit as low as 30 balls bowled. The only one who compares in terms of having an economy of less than seven with more than 50 wickets is, expectedly, Jasprit Bumrah, who has conceded runs at 6.90, and has taken 85 wickets to Rashid’s 77.

Alongside Rowe: Leeds keen on £6.8m star who could be their next Gruev

Leeds United fans will pray that this Championship season is the one where the Whites win promotion back to the Premier League in resounding fashion having just missed out last campaign courtesy of the lottery of the playoffs.

There is a feel-good factor in the air at Elland Road that they can wrestle free of their tag as bottlejobs on the big occasion, with the hope that an emphatic win against second-tier new boys Portsmouth on the opening day can start the 46-game marathon in the best possible way.

Daniel Farke will feel that he is still a body or two short from having the finished squad that he thinks could be capable of winning promotion in style though, with a new move now in the works.

Leeds in the hunt for FC Koln star

Leeds aren't just looking to bolster their options out wide, with Norwich City's Jonathan Rowe a target, but their midfield areas could also be strengthened.

As per German outlet BILD, Leeds could still come out on top regarding their pursuit of FC Koln midfielder Dejan Ljubicic, if they're willing to cough up some significant cash.

Leeds are in the money again with Crysencio Summerville's sale to West Ham United injecting some much-needed funds into the transfer kitty, and so the Whites could be prepared to splash out on the Austrian star, with BILD speculating that £6.8m should be enough for Ljubicic to move to West Yorkshire.

Dejan Ljubicic for FC Koln.

Suffering a relegation down to the Bundesliga 2 last campaign, Koln must have known it was going to be a tall order to keep a firm grip on their 26-year-old gem ahead of the new season, with Ljubicic now even stating that he 'dreams' of a major move away from Germany.

How Ljubicic can be Farke's next Gruev

Farke will hope he can mould this potential recruit into his next Ilia Gruev, who shone last campaign after once being a relatively unknown entity from another German club in Werder Bremen, to the point where Borussia Dortmund have even been sniffing around for his services.

Ilia Gruev

Gruev would slowly but surely become a key cog in the Whites' first team, going on to make 35 appearances in all competitions, forming a solid duo in the holding midfield spots with the now departed Glen Kamara.

The Leeds number 44 was unerringly cool on the ball under pressure across the frantic full campaign, finishing the regular season in the Championship with a 92% pass accuracy on average per clash, alongside firing home one memorable strike against Norwich City in the playoffs, before Wembley heartbreak eventually greeted Farke's men.

The nine-time Austria international starred on the opening day of the Bundesliga 2 season for his current employers, as can be seen looking at the table above, displaying shades of Gruev's game with three key passes notched up, alongside a willingness to disrupt play and battle with three duels bravely won.

Leeds might well have been watching on to cast an eye over their target once more, presumably encouraged by what they saw to now be tempted into bidding the excessive £6.8m being thrown about, with his assist on the day gifting Koln a goal in the 2-1 loss.

Scoring 11 goals to date whilst donning a Koln jersey, including this sublime strike at the start of 2024, Ljubicic could give Farke's men another attacking option in the middle of the park akin to new loan signing Joe Rothwell, who also has a long-range rocket up his sleeve.

Farke will be happy with the players that he has to choose from currently, with the likes of Wilfried Gnonto and Georginio Rutter remaining fixed in their West Yorkshire postcodes for the time being alongside Gruev obvious positives, but new arrivals such as Ljubicic would really strengthen this top squad even more.

Forget about Rowe: Leeds could make move to sign "remarkable" PL winger

The Whites could decide to swoop for the talented youngster this summer.

Entretanto, a arbitragem assinalou impedimento do atacante do time maranhense.
