    WHAT NEXT FOR LAUREN JAMES?

The attacker will be next seen in action for her club when the new WSL season kicks off on September 21.

"Top target" – Liverpool want to sign the "next Kylian Mbappe" this summer

Liverpool have reportedly identified a "top target" to bring to the club in the summer transfer window, with the player compared to current superstar Kylian Mbappe.

Liverpool transfer news

Jurgen Klopp's reign is slowly nearing its conclusion, which is still hard to fathom for many Reds supporters, and their next manager will no doubt eye up new signings, with Benfica's Roger Schmidt recently name-checked as an option for the job.

While Liverpool's next boss may not be confirmed yet, the Merseysiders continue to be linked with additions at the end of the season. RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko is another individual who has been backed to move to Anfield, with the Slovenian likened to Erling Haaland in the past.

The Reds could do with defensive reinforcements in the summer and Barcelona centre-back Andreas Christensen is also a player who is believed to be on their radar, as he looks for a potential return to the Premier League.

Andreas Christensen

Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz has also been linked with Liverpool, with the young German seemingly a player with a massive future, as he edges closer to inspiring his side to Bundesliga title glory this season.

Luis Guilherme a "top target" for Liverpool

According to a fresh update from Football Insider, Liverpool have made Palmeiras teenager Luis Guilherme a "top target" this summer after missing out on him in January, with the attacker labelled as the "next Kylian Mbappe".

"Liverpool have made the “next Kylian Mbappe” – Palmeiras teenage sensation Luis Guilherme – a top target ahead of the summer window, sources have told Football Insider. The Reds considered a formal January move for the 18-year-old but eventually decided against firming up their interest.

"A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Liverpool are now plotting a summer swoop for Guilherme. Sources say the Merseysiders consider him a “top target” ahead of the off-season."

Admittedly, not a huge amount may be known about Guilherme as a player, given his age and the fact he isn't playing in Europe currently, but being compared to someone as iconic as Mbappe is a good place to start.

While the Brazilian may still be just 18 years of age, only celebrating his milestone birthday earlier this month, he has already picked up 32 appearances for Palmeiras. No goal contributions have come his way in that time, which is a little disappointing, but it is clear that he is already a trusted squad player.

Guilherme is also a Brazil international at youth team level, winning five and four caps for his country's Under-20s and Under-17s respectively, scoring twice for the latter. He is capable of playing in attacking midfield or out wide.

Jamie Carragher says he’s “heard” about 56 y/o becoming Liverpool manager

His football is “similar to Klopp’s style”.

There is something about signing a young Brazilian starlet that always feels exciting, given the manner in which the likes of Pele, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Neymar have burst onto the scene in the past, and if Liverpool feel Guilherme can explode in the future, they could do all they can to snap him up this summer.

Vinod Rai trying to make associations 'adopt a servient attitude' – N Srinivasan

Abide by the directives of the CoA or forfeit your right to vote in the AGM is not an acceptable stance, says the former BCCI president

Former BCCI president N Srinivasan has challenged Committee of Administrators’ chairman Vinod Rai’s assertion that the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) stands to be disqualified from attending the BCCI elections, scheduled for October 23, if its constitution is not amended in line with that of the board.Srinivasan, also a former ICC chairman but not an official in either the TNCA or the BCCI anymore, argued that the CoA was attempting to force state associations to comply with the BCCI constitution as a “pressure ploy”, but that would only mean members losing their legal rights.”I, for one, am not able to connect the eligibility to vote as a Full Member in the AGM and amendments to the members’ constitution unless the BCCI elections are being held as a pressure ploy to get the members to give up their legal rights and adopt a servient attitude,” Srinivasan was quoted as saying by Sportstar on Sunday. “I’m reminded of a quote by Robert A. Heinlein: ‘There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him’.”Srinivasan, who was TNCA president for more than a decade, had to step down after the Supreme Court approved the RM Lodha Committee recommendations on structural reforms. However, last week, Rupa Gurunath, Srinivasan’s daughter, became the first-ever woman to head an Indian state cricket association when she was unanimously elected as the new TNCA president.Rupa also happens to be the wife of Gurunath Meiyappan, a former official at Chennai Super Kings – owned by Srinivasan’s India Cements – who was banned for life by the BCCI after it was established that he had breached the anti-corruption code.On the same day the new TNCA administration took charge, the CoA told the TNCA that its constitution was not compliant with the BCCI’s, with several eligibility criteria flouted. This was followed by an email by BCCI electoral officer N Gopalaswami sending out an email to all state associations stating that non-compliant members would not be allowed to attend the BCCI elections and the annual general meeting, and disqualified state representatives would not be able to participate in the board’s polls. Rai reiterated the same.According to Srinivasan, the final say on the matter can only be taken by the court, which had passed an order on September 20 allowing TNCA to conduct its polls, but said the results would be held in abeyance until its final order.Srinivasan also said that P Narsimha, the amicus curiae who had been asked by the court to act as a mediator to facilitate the states to comply with its original order, had been “receptive” to the TNCA argument. “I’m told that the learned amicus curiae was receptive to many of the requests of the TNCA and has filed an interim report in court which is yet to be seen by the Supreme Court,” Srinivasan said. “Therefore, abide by the directives of the CoA, or forfeit your right to vote in the AGM is not a stand which Mr Vinod Rai can take. He nor the CoA can substitute their wisdom for that of the Supreme Court.”Srinivasan said the court was yet to hear the TNCA case as well as the pleas of other states at length, so the CoA could not pass any diktat right away. “The CoA was told elections would go on and all matters would be decided later, including the outcome of the elections,” Srinivasan said. “Earlier, the TNCA had made clear its stand on three basic issues: having at least two vice-presidents, one representing the 150 city club members and another from the 30 district associations, opposition to the applicability of eligibility criteria for committee members and the stipulation that for any amendment in future, the Supreme Court’s approval was necessary.”

Jonassen and Wareham share seven wickets in Australia's canter

Australia completed an unbeaten tour of West Indies in domineering style as they sped to a nine-wicket victory with more than 12 overs to spare

Australia completed an unbeaten tour of West Indies in domineering style as they cantered to a nine-wicket victory with more than 12 overs remaining in the final T20I.West Indies were bowled out for 81 with only Britney Cooper (29) offering much resistance as Jess Jonassen picked up a career-best 4 for 7 – the fourth best T20I figures for Australia – and Georgia Wareham nabbed 3 for 14.The chase was a formality as Alyssa Healy cracked 38 off 16 balls to round off her prolific tour in style. The 75 balls remaining was both the most for an Australia victory and West Indies defeat.”It was always going to be a test tonight,” coach Matthew Mott said. “It’s been a long trip away combined with the Ashes so I was really pleased with the effort, particularly in the field, to bowl them out then it was a clinical chase. It was a real challenge for the group and they spoke about it this morning. We like to finish off in style and close the book on things so that was the most pleasing thing. Can’t ask for much more.”As has been the case throughout the trip Australia made early inroads with Megan Schutt striking in the third over and wickets fell steadily throughout with West Indies unable to build any momentum.Wareham struck with her fourth delivery to remove captain Stafanie Taylor who was playing her 100th T20I and returned to grab two more. West Indies’ last six wickets fell for six runs, including three wickets in six deliveries in the 18th over, with Jonassen, the seventh bowler used by Meg Lanning, helping cut through the lower order.Australia’s chase was off to a blistering start when the opening over from Sheneta Grimmond went for 16 and it appeared Healy would almost knock off the target herself before cutting to short third man.Victory was sealed by Beth Mooney and Ellyse Perry, the winning boundary coming from an elegant lofted cover drive by Mooney to leave no one in any doubt about Australia’s superiority.

Nottingham Forest already have a Worrall replacement right in front of them

Since promotion back to the Premier League in 2022, Nottingham Forest have used nine different players at centre-back with the City Ground outfit still yet to find a settled partnership.

The likes of Steve Cook, Scott McKenna and Guilian Biancone have all featured at the heart of the Reds' defence, but have all departed in recent months as the club look to cut down the large playing squad at the City Ground.

Murillo, who joined Forest from Corinthians for £15m last summer, has been ever-present at the back for the Reds since his Premier League debut against Brentford back in October last year. The 21-year-old Brazilian has started 18 league games in a row but has often featured alongside a different centre-back partner in most of his outings for the club.

Murillo

Before the ongoing African Cup of Nations, Murillo was partnered by either Moussa Niakhate or Willy Boly – with the latter missing for the last six weeks due to the tournament and a wrongful dismissal against Bournemouth.

Joe Worrall's move to Besiktas

Another player who has featured for the Reds at the back since promotion is academy graduate Joe Worrall. Since his professional debut for Forest back in 2016, the 27-year-old has gone on to make 227 appearances for his boyhood club.

After featuring 30 times in the Premier League for Forest last season, Worrall fell down the pecking order under former boss Steve Cooper and has only featured twice under new head coach Nuno Espírito Santo.

The defender was linked with a move away from the City Ground during the January window – with Leeds United and Sheffield United both interested in taking the former Rangers loanee on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Worrall remained at the City Ground upon the closure of the British window on February 1st but secured a move-away to join Turkish side Besiktas on a deal until the end of the season, with an option to make the move permanent in the summer.

The 27-year-old's departure coupled with Niakhate and Boly's absence due to AFCON has given one member of the Forest playing squad a valuable opportunity to cement his place as a regular starter under Nuno.

Nottingham Forest's readymade Worrall replacement

In recent weeks, Andrew Omobamidele has been handed a run of games at centre-back alongside the ever-present Murillo. Despite joining from Norwich City for £11m on deadline day in the summer, the 21-year-old Irishman was overlooked by Cooper and only made his debut in the FA Cup replay against Blackpool on January 17th.

Following his debut, the former Norwich man had played every minute for Nuno – prior to dropping to the bench in the defeat to Newcastle United – proving himself to be a more than capable centre-back partner for Murillo.

When comparing Omobamidele to Worrall this season, it is clear that the 21-year-old is much more comfortable on the ball – a characteristic Nuno wants in his centre-back when building from the back.

Worrall only averages 40 passes completed per 90 this season, whilst the Irishman Omobamidele averages 22 more with his tally of 62 – as per FBref. However, it's not just passes completed that the Reds' new defender trumps Worrall in, with Omobamidele also completing 8% more of the passes he's attempted this campaign.

Omobamidele likes to drive forward with the ball – a lot more than Worrall, with the 21-year-old completing 1.1 progressive carries per match in comparison to Worrall's lowly average of just 0.1 per 90.

In a time when young ball-playing centre-backs are hard to come by, the club have conducted brilliant business in the market with Omobamidele and Murillo having the potential to be the Reds' long-term solution at the back.

Everton make big in-house appointment but they aren’t finished yet

Everton have made a significant in-house appointment after an update regarding their scouting approach, with more changes planned imminently.

Off-field changes required at Everton

It's fair to say that this has been a tumultuous season at Goodison Park, as Sean Dyche's side continue to battle for their survival in the Premier League. It has been off-field developments that have been most significant, with a 10-point deduction changed to six after an appeal, further increasing the risk of relegation to the Championship, despite the reduced tally.

Away from that key development, there is also the ongoing takeover situation involving 777 Partners, with Everton's potential new owners' credentials being called into question a number of times in recent months.

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri.

Many Blues supporters are now desperate to see Farhad Moshiri sell the club, allowing them to move on and enjoy a new era with a more popular owner, but there is still no end in sight currently and no certainty about 777's reliability either.

All of the above has made for a frustrating time of things for supporters, who just want stability to return to Goodison after years of struggles, especially with a move to their new stadium at Bramely Moore Dock now just over a year away.

Everton make big in-house appointment

According to The Secret Scout on X, Everton have appointed James Vaughan as the club's new Head of Youth Recruitment, but they aren't stopping there, plotting an "aggressive" approach to their youth scouting in the coming years.

"James Vaughan has been appointed as Everton’s new Head of Youth Recruitment. The former striker moves across from his role as Loans Manager. Everton are looking to be more aggressive in scouting future talents across the UK."

Everton's home stadium, Goodison Park.

While there is much to be negative about at Everton at the moment, this does represent a positive update for the club, suggesting they are looking to promote youth even more, ensuring that the long-term future of the club is healthy and not reliant on spending beyond their means.

Too many clubs are guilty of neglecting youth and simply spending huge amounts of money on big names, with Chelsea and Manchester City both springing to mind, and while Blues fans may not want to hear it, rivals Liverpool just down the road are showing how it's done, with the likes of Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah flourishing after coming through the youth ranks. Then of course there is Jarrad Branthwaite on the blue half of Merseyside, whose breakout has been one of the stories of the season.

This is an exciting appointment for Vaughan himself, who has been in his role as Loan Manager since 2022, and who was previously sporting director at Tranmere Rovers, suggesting that he has an eye for a transfer.

Still only 35 years of age, the former Everton striker knows the club inside and no doubt has a passion for helping the club head in the right direction, and the hope is that he flourishes in his new position.

Everton make first move to sign new gem who's on his way to Finch Farm

He’s one for the future.

ByTom Cunningham Mar 8, 2024

Now, it is essential for further positive progress to be made at Everton in the coming months, starting with relegation being avoided, before hopefully heading into next season with new owners in place and a more settled feeling at the club.

Rangers must get rid of a dud who earns more than Cantwell

Glasgow Rangers' revival under Philippe Clement has been nothing short of remarkable. The recent 2-2 draw against Benfica in the Europa League last-16 first leg proved just how far they have come since the Belgian took charge.

Under Michael Beale, the Light Blues would have lost the match, but the squad has developed a never-say-die mentality in recent months.

The result in Lisbon came despite Rangers missing four wingers, meaning Clement had to rejig his starting XI, yet they head into the second leg with an excellent chance of progression to the quarter-finals.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

This transformation over the previous six months from a club on its knees to one that can potentially win three trophies has been incredible, especially considering the squad the 49-year-old coach has inherited.

Several players are not up to the required standard – and some are earning a ridiculously high wage, too, with the most notable example being defender Ben Davies.

Not only that, but the former Liverpool centre-back is even earning more than several established first-team stars such as Todd Cantwell.

How much Ben Davies earns at Rangers

Davies joined the Light Blues in a deal worth £4m during the 2022 summer transfer window as Giovanni van Bronckhorst aimed to bolster his backline ahead of the new season.

The 28-year-old was also given a wage of £27k per week, which made him one of the highest earners at the club.

The move has not worked out as well as first anticipated, and Clement may choose to move him on this summer in order to raise funds for other targets.

Ben Davies’ Rangers statistics

His first season at Ibrox saw Davies play 38 matches in all competitions, yet the early part of the campaign saw him suffer with a few injury issues, and he ended up starting just 11 games before Van Bronckhorst was sacked in November 2022.

His three starts in the Champions League saw the Gers concede 12 goals, while Davies ranked in a lowly 14th spot in the squad for tackles per game (one), along with ranking sixth for possession lost per game (10.3), as well as 18th for average Sofascore rating (6.23), indicating that his performances were poor as the Light Blues struggled in Europe’s elite club competition.

Ben Davies

The defender also made mistakes domestically, with the most notable one coming against Celtic in a crucial Premiership clash in April 2023.

Anything but a win for Rangers would have been disastrous in the race for the league title. The match was finely poised at 1-1 before a long ball was played over the top of the Gers defence that Davies failed to clear, which led to Celtic scoring their second goal.

This mistake led to criticism from the media, with former Rangers' striker Kenny Miller saying:

“It’s a wonderful finish. Again he’s alert, alive, ruthless when the chance drops. But it’s so poor from Ben Davies. He should be heading that out.”

Davies has made 12 appearances this season, with only six of those coming under Clement, as it is apparent he is not in his future plans.

Ben Davies’ Rangers future is unclear

The centre-back attracted the attention of Stoke City following the end of the 2022/23 season, but it was revealed that Davies was not a player who was going to be sold ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Just prior to the end of the summer window last year, the Gers even rejected a loan deal from Stoke City to take the former Liverpool player back down south, and he remained in Glasgow.

His contract does not expire until 2026 and this could mean Clement will be able to move him on for a decent transfer fee this summer.

Ben Davies

Not only that, but during his spell at the club, Davies has rinsed them of £6.4m so far, combining his transfer fee and wages, and this will only continue to rise until he is moved on.

Considering he earns more than Cantwell, his departure will also free up some of the wage bill for future arrivals.

How much Todd Cantwell earns at Rangers

The former Norwich City sensation currently earns £22k per week at the Ibrox side, which is £5k less than Davies at the moment.

Todd Cantwell

Considering how important the midfielder has become over the previous few months under Clement, it is hard to believe that Davies is earning more than him at present.

Todd Cantwell’s Rangers statistics this season

The Englishman endured a slow start to the season, not scoring his first goal until November, yet this seemed to be a catalyst which kickstarted his campaign.

Since that excellent effort against Sparta Prague in the Europa League, Cantwell has scored five times and registered two assists as Clement has deployed him in his favoured No 10 slot.

Cantwell currently ranks fourth among the squad for goals and assists (eight) in the Premiership, while also ranking fifth for big chances created (four), fourth for key passes per game (1.6) and fifth for successful dribbles per game (1.1), clearly demonstrating his importance to the team.

He has missed the previous four games due to suffering a hamstring injury, and the quicker Clement can restore him to the starting XI, the better, especially as the games are coming thick and fast in the weeks ahead.

The Light Blues have a wonderful chance of winning three domestic trophies this term and much will depend on how far they progress in Europe, as this could derail their ambitions closer to home.

Todd Cantwell

Davies may have only played 12 matches this season, but he could be called upon during the final months if injuries occur, but his long-term future at Ibrox does not look promising under the Belgian coach.

The fact he is currently the third-highest earner in the squad speaks volumes for previous managers and their lack of nous in the transfer market.

Clement has already gone with a more youth-based approach to new signings and this will hopefully continue when the summer window opens in a couple of months.
