Hwang replaced by "incredible" star in predicted Wolves lineup vs Brentford

Wolves go into today's FA Cup fixture against Brentford off the back of a comfortbale 3-0 home win over Sean Dyche's Everton.

That result was Gary O'Neil's third consecutive win in the Premier League, which puts his side 11th in the table and highlights just how much progress has been made in such little time.

Last season, the Old Gold were knocked out of the FA Cup in Round three as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool, but they will be hoping to reach the latter stages of the competition this time around.

However, Wolves will be without three key players for the game against the Bees, which will force the boss to make changes to last week's starting XI. Here's the expected lineup for tonight's encounter.

1 GK – Jose Sa

Wolverhampton Wanderers'JoseSa

Jose Sa has been the first-choice shot-stopper this season, starting 18 matches in the Premier League but keeping only two clean sheets. Nevertheless, the Portuguese international will start on Friday night.

2 RCB – Max Kilman

Max Kilman

The Wolves captain will start in his usual right centre-back position, and will hope to lead the side to victory. Kilman has started every game for Wolves this season in the league and scored last time out.

3 CB – Santiago Bueno

With Craig Dawson only just returning from injury and Santiago Bueno starting just two Premier League games since joining, this match looks like the perfect opportunity for the Uruguayan to get minutes.

4 LCB – Toti Gomes

Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Toti Gomes.

Toti Gomes has made the left-centre-half role his own this season, starting all of the last 14 matches. The Portuguese defender performed excellently when Wolves beat the Bees 4-1 just after Christmas.

5 RM/RWB – Nelson Semedo

Nelson Semedo for Wolves

Matt Doherty could come into the side on Friday, but O'Neil won't want to change too much in case it disrupts the side's momentum. Therefore, Nelson Semedo will be given the nod for the role he has played 19 times this season.

6 CM – Joao Gomes

Wolves' Joao Gomes.

Joao Gomes was forced off early last time out but should be available to start against Brentford.

The Brazilian is the tenacious tackler in the side, and he has won the most tackles per game in the Wolves squad, 3.2.

7 CM – Tommy Doyle

Tommy Doyle

With Mario Lemina unavailable due to family reasons, Tommy Doyle will once again start alongside Gomes in the midfield two.

The City loanee made his third start of the season in the 3-0 win over Everton.

8 LM/LWB – Jean-Ricner Bellegarde

jean-ricner-bellegarde-wolves

Rayan Ait Nouri would usually feature in this role, but due to the wingback playing for Algeria in the African Cup of Nations, he is out.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde has played this role already this season and could be given the start over Hugo Bueno.

9 RW – Pablo Sarabia

Pablo Sarabia has been quietly impressive this season, contributing six goals and creating the most big chances in the Wolves side (6).

He has become a frequent starter over the last month and will start in attack once again.

10 ST – Matheus Cunha

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

Matheus Cunha is on fire at the moment, scoring four goals and assisting four in his last nine matches.

He was the player of the match last weekend as he scored and assisted, and he will be given the responsibility of leading the line on Friday.

Afghanistan chase historic Test win after Rashid Khan five-for

So what should James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Co know about Ireland when England host them at Lord’s in July? One: Tim Murtagh is by no means a No. 11 batsman, although he’ll proudly take the No. 4 spot he occupies in the all-time list for most runs by the last man in a Test. And two: Don’t relax if you’ve picked up nine Ireland wickets quickly. It definitely doesn’t end there. After an epic 87-run last-wicket rescue act with George Dockrell in the first innings that gave Ireland’s total some amount of heft, Murtagh added 58 with James Cameron-Dow in the second to stretch Ireland’s lead to 146 when, at one stage, it looked like it would be a double-digit target for Afghanistan. This after Rashid Khan had run amok, picking up Afghanistan’s first Test five-for after an unimpressive show early in the day, where he struggled for consistency. His performance also dispelled doubts over a finger injury that he picked up while batting at the nets prior to the Test. Then, with the bat, Afghanistan played right into Ireland’s hands up front. Mohammad Shahzad’s decision to cut out all scoring shots, even to deliveries pitched up, seemingly to play for stumps, resulted in Ireland bottling up runs and creating pressure. As it often happens when a batsmen goes into the shell, Shahzad was out to a rank bad ball, getting a faint tickle to one going down leg from Andy McBrine. However, the good work done by their bowlers meant that Afghanistan might not have to bear the brunt of Ireland’s lower-order jailbreak. They ended the third day in Dehradun on 29 for 1 after 16, needing 118 more. Not an utterly dire situation, even though strange things are known to happen on a wearing pitch.Andrew Balbirnie led the Ireland batting charge•AFP

Back to the Ireland second innings – their meltdown against Rashid and left-arm wristspinner Waqar Salamkheil, brought about by fizz on a wearing pitch, was as glaring as some debatable umpiring calls. As many as four decisions went against Ireland, three of those leading to dismissals of key batsmen Paul Stirling, Dockrell and Kevin O’Brien.Dockrell’s in particular came against the run of play, after he’d bunted the bowling for more than an hour to make 25, using his height and solid technique to add 63 for the seventh wicket with O’Brien. He was rooted to the crease, and made the mistake of playing around a quicker delivery, but replays suggested the ball might have missed leg stump.Next was the huge scalp of O’Brien almost immediately after. He had constructed a back-to-the-wall 56, in which he shunned his natural see-ball-hit-ball game to match the situation. It was a slider, which O’Brien looked to play across and was hit on the pad. Once again, replays suggested that the point of impact was on the outer bit of leg stump. No DRS meant no review in either instance. The two wickets came immediately after the tea interval to hurt Ireland, and much like they had lost the well-set Andy Balbirnie and James McCollum immediately after the lunch interval, it set them back by a big way.Balbirnie displayed exquisite technique and resolve against spin to make 82, his first double-digit score in Tests after a pair on debut and 4 in the first innings here, while McCollum was rewarded for his decision to play the spinners out of the hand rather than just off the surface. They added 104 runs to bail Ireland out from a morning wobble when they lost Stirling in the fifth over off a thick inside edge on to the pad off fast bowler Yamin Ahmadzai. S Ravi gave it out and Stirling walked back calmly, not showing a hint of anger or dissent at the decision he had just received. While a number of decisions went against Ireland, it wouldn’t be fair to not laud the Afghanistan spinners. Equally commendable was the show by debutant wicketkeeper Ikram Ali Khil, whose catch off Balbirnie was outstanding. Salamkheil’s flatter trajectory married with bounce off the deck resulted in questions being asked of the batsmen, and eventually resulted in wickets too.Soon after Balbirnie came the wicket of a nervous Stuart Poynter. He glided a shortish delivery to Ihsanullah Janat, who instinctively moved low to his right to pouch an excellent catch at slip. This had Ireland slipping from 137 for 2 to 150 for 5.The trouble didn’t end there, as another umpiring error came back to hurt them when Stuart Thompson was wrongly given out caught at slip by umpire Richard Illingworth. He got outside the line to a sharp-turning legbreak that lobbed off the pad to slip. It couldn’t have been lbw, as the impact clearly outside off. Later, it was clarified on the scoreboard that he had been out caught. However, replays confirmed there was no edge.As much as these decisions may have prevented Ireland from gaining a bigger lead, they could yet make a match of this. If that happens, they will have the lower order and Balbirnie to thank big time.

Chelsea could move on from injury-prone James with £35m "monster" in January

Chelsea came into this season on the back of an impressive pre-season campaign and with an element of hope that, with new boss Mauricio Pochettino, they could fight their way back into the European places come May.

However, with 16 games of the Premier League season already played – almost half – the Blues are once again in the bottom half of the table, and based on performances, rightly so.

That said, injuries haven't helped the young side, especially in the case of club captain Reece James, who had to come off against Everton on the weekend and is now set to spend a second spell on the sidelines this season.

While his absence will undoubtedly cause more headaches for Pochettino, there is some good news, as the latest player linked with Stamford Bridge could even replace the Cobham graduate altogether – Denzel Dumfries.

Chelsea transfer news – Denzel Dumfries

According to Italian outlet Calciomercatio, Inter Milan star Dumfries has courted the attention of Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester United, with both teams keen on signing the player in 2024.

The interest of United is undoubtedly one of the barriers that the Blues will have to overcome if they want to sign the Dutchman, but the other is the price, as according to Calciomercato.IT, the Nerazzurri will not sell their player for anything less than €40m – which works out to about £35m.

Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries

It would represent another sizeable investment from Todd Boehly and co, though with how well the "monster", as described by journalist Alan Rzepa, has performed in Italy and the uncertainty surrounding James' fitness, it would likely be worth it.

Denzel Dumfries could replace Reece James and Malo Gusto

Now, James is obviously an enormous talent and widely considered one of the best right-backs in world football, but if he can't stay fit for more than a couple of months, then Chelsea simply can not benefit from his talent.

Since making his debut for the Blues in September 2019, the "world-class" 24-year-old, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has suffered 17 injuries – not including the latest one – which have made him miss a combined 463 days of action and 89 games for club and country, per Transfermarkt.

With a record such as that, the chance of James following a career trajectory similar to Jack Wilshere, another uber-talented youngster, is worryingly high. And with Malo Gusto – who is also currently sidelined – not exactly tearing up trees this year, it could be time for the club to look at another long-term solution at right-back.

When comparing the trios' underlying numbers, Dumfries simply has to measure up well with the Chelsea captain; if he can be 75% of the player 100% of the time, it will be more useful to Pochettino.

Unsurprisingly, there are some areas in which the former Wigan loanee comes out on top, such as tackles won and non-penalty expected goals and assists. However, the Serie A defender comes out ahead in plenty of other areas.

Ultimately, for as fantastic as James is, and for as outrageously high as his potential might be, the fact that he can't seem to string a run of games together at age 24 should be – and probably is – ringing alarm bells at Chelsea.

For the reasonable fee of around £35m, the two-time European champions should strongly consider signing Dumfries as he would be a more than adequate player to play in James' place and potentially instead of him if the injuries remain a problem.

'You have no sense of reality' – Erik ten Hag blasts unrealistic expectations at Man Utd as he admits season has been 'crap' amid sack rumours

Erik ten Hag has hit out at the expectation at Manchester United in a fiery interview ahead of the FA Cup final and his likely sacking.

Ten Hag interview blasts expectationsUnited face City in FA Cup finalTuchel emerges as favourite for jobWHAT HAPPENED?

The United boss was defiant as he defended his time at the club and argued that he had been held to unrealistic expectations. Ten Hag is widely expected to be sacked following the final, regardless of whether he is victorious or not, and does not appear to be going quietly. The Dutchman also suggests that his successor will suffer the same fate unless the club faces reality.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT TEN HAG SAID

Speaking to , the United boss said: “Manchester United won the league for the last time in 2013, 11 years ago. But, still, they expect us to win every game while competing at the top. This club is not ready for that.

“We were supposed to start building something and we made the first steps last year, but then you find out how big this club is and that nobody is ever satisfied. Within the club people were satisfied, but outside the club there was noise by saying I won only the Carabao Cup, lost the FA Cup Final and finished third. Well, then you have no sense of reality. Other clubs had a much better squad.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ten Hag is keen to point to the fact that the owners had initially offered him support. “They said they want to change everything and that they want to rebuild WITH me. This is what they told me directly,” he explained.

However, with the club recording its worst-ever Premier League finish this season under the Dutchman, the United board have started looking at alternative options. Despite his poor finish, Ten Hag defended a campaign that could end in silverware.

He said: “Let me be clear. It has been bad. It has been crap. But despite everything, we are going to play an FA Cup final."

Even if United beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday, it will be too little, too late. Ten Hag will almost certainly be sacked by United and the Red Devils will be forced to undergo yet another rebuild. Former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has emerged as favourite to take to the dugout at Old Trafford.

Arsenal could sign "elegant" £43m-rated Martinelli rival likened to Mudryk

Arsenal endured something of a midseason collapse prior to the winter break, with three losses on the trot seeing them fall to fourth in the Premier League and crash out of the FA Cup.

Mikel Arteta's men registered just one goal in those three games while conceding six, so it isn't surprising to see a host of names now linked to the Emirates this month.

One of those names is a promising youngster who is probably considered competition for an out-of-sorts Gabriel Martinelli, given his poor return of two league goals this season.

However, with this player being likened to Chelsea's pricey flop Mykhalio Mudryk, it might be best for the Gunners to steer clear.

Mikel Arteta looks to his old team for attacking reinforcements

According to a report from The Sun earlier this week, Arsenal are interested in Real Sociedad winger Ander Barrenetxea this month and view him as a 'top target' to provide competition for Martinelli.

The publication has also revealed that north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur are keen on bringing the young Spaniard to N17.

Both teams sent scouts to watch him play in the Basque Derby on Thursday night, although he was booked in the 61st minute, hooked in the 63rd, and Sociedad lost 2-1, so it wasn't an ideal showing.

Valued at £43m by the CIES football observatory, this would likely be an expensive deal to complete – even with Arteta's good relations with the club – and with the 22-year-old being compared to Mudryk, this might not be a deal worth completing.

How Barrenetxea compares to Mudryk and Martinelli

According to the footballing database FBref, the rapid Ukranian is the fifth most similar player to the Sociedad ace across Europe's top five leagues.

This is based on the fact that the pair measure up and rank similarly for various key metrics in those leagues, such as touches in the opposition box, progressive carries and tackles per 90.

However, the percentiles in which they fall for these metrics are not impressive, with the "elegant but hard-working" Spaniard, as he was described by U23 scout Antonio Mango, sitting in the top 46% of wingers for touches in the opposition's box, the top 29% for progressive carries and the top 19% for progressive passes received per 90.

Mudryk, on the other hand, sits in the top 35%, the top 22% and the top 28% for the same metrics.

What's worse is that besides these rather uninspiring figures, Martinelli is still miles clear of the player who supposedly could be his competition when it comes to their underlying numbers this season.

In fact, even Mudryk – who has had a rough time in west London after scoring just four goals since the Blues edged out Arsenal with an £88.5m offer last year – comes out ahead of Barrenetxea.

Arsenal could sign the next Odegaard in "special" £43m sensation

The 20-year-old could add some extra flair to Arsenal’s midfield.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Jan 19, 2024

Ultimately, the young Spaniard – who has scored three times this season – has some talent and he could prove the doubters wrong, but based on the figures above and his close similarities to Mudryk, it does not make sense for Arsenal to spend so much money on a player who is clearly not good enough to displace Martinelli, even when he is out of form.
