Jeremy Doku is Man City's game-changer! Unpredictable winger is Pep Guardiola's secret weapon in the Premier League title race

The tricky Belgian has worked on his ability to make an impact from the bench and has turned into a lethal weapon for City to turn to from the bench

Jeremy Doku has only been at Manchester City for eight months, but his time can be divided into four chapters. There was the concerning debut against Fulham, when he managed to look out of place despite the team winning 5-1 and admitted that he was "frustrated" not to have contributed.

Then there was the rip-roaring six-week period when he put Jack Grealish in the shade with a series of thrilling performances. got his first goal against West Ham, scored and assisted in the Champions League at RB Leipzig, was electric against Brighton and then was ridiculously good against Bournemouth, setting up four goals and scoring one to set FPL fans' hearts racing.

Then he injured his hamstring against Tottenham and was out for a month. He scored on his return against Huddersfield Town, but then a long and difficult period set in. He drifted in and out of the team, either starting on the bench or being the first player to be taken off. Almost five months passed without him contributing to a goal.

But now the tricky Belgian is writing a thrilling final chapter of his topsy-turvy debut campaign with City, finding a new lease of life as a secret weapon that Pep Guardiola has in his back pocket, ready to unleash just when opponents think they are about to contain his side.

Getty Terrorising defenders again

Doku broke his long drought of goals and assists by teeing up Phil Foden's strike against Aston Villa earlier this month. He then filled his boots in his next fixture against Luton, having a hand in all of City's goals in the 5-1 thrashing, including earning a penalty, grabbing the fourth goal himself by terrorising the defence with an awe-inspiring dribble and then laying off the ball for Josko Gvardiol's thumping finish.

But what he did next was arguably more valuable to City, and proof that he can have a vital say in the club's bid to win a fourth consecutive league title and another FA Cup.

Guardiola turned to Doku when City were losing 1-0 at home to Real Madrid. Grealish had been performing well, but Guardiola needed something extra, and Doku delivered.

His unpredictable runs and capacity to cause chaos got underneath Madrid's skin, and within four minutes City were level. It was one of his forays into the box which unsettled Antonio Rudiger and led to him gifting Kevin De Bruyne the equaliser.

As City dominated extra-time before falling to Madrid on penalties, Doku was the thorn in their side, probing down the left and twisting Dani Carvajal inside out.

Getty 'Changed the game'

Three days later at Wembley against Chelsea, Guardiola pulled the same trick, removing Grealish for Doku. The winger gave an exhausted-looking and previously toothless City side the edge, opening Chelsea up.

After fashioning one chance of his own and another for De Bruyne with his trademark dribbling, Doku lit the fuse for Bernardo Silva to score the elusive goal. But this time he did it with a clever pass to release De Bruyne, who eventually worked it to Bernardo at the back post.

When Guardiola was asked about Doku's impact after the game, his face lit up. "He changed the game, the same as Madrid when he created a lot of chances," the coach said.

Getty 'Massively important'

Guardiola then revealed how he and Doku had worked together to help the player not only rediscover the sparkling form he had shown in the autumn, but also develop another side of his game. In true Guardiola style, the coach managed to praise his player while also not glossing over the weaknesses in his game.

"Jeremy has made a step. When he arrived, after West Ham, I was like 'oh my God, unbelievable player', and until his injury he was at a top level," Guardiola said. "Always when he came from the bench the impact was not good. From the start was good, the bench not good. We talked about that, how he has to make an impact when the players are more tired and he has a special quality one against one.

"Jeremy is an exceptional player one on one, close to the box. He is young and has to improve many, many things, but in the final third he is massively important for us."

Arsenal thrash Chelsea 5-0Blues missed ill PalmerPochettino slams performanceWHAT HAPPENED?

Chelsea were thumped at the Emirates on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Leandro Trossard and a brace apiece for Ben White and Kai Havertz. The Blues were without top scorer Cole Palmer due to illness but that does not explain their dismal defeat in north London. And manager Pochettino admitted his side can be a poor team at times.

In his post match press conference, he said: "Maybe with him, the team today, it could be in the same situation. But of course [Cole] Palmer is doing well for us and he is the only player we have to link all the lines of the team. When you miss a player like this, it is not easy. It was a great opportunity for some players to step up. We are showing this inconsistency and that is why we are where we are. We are able to have an amazing performance [against Man City] and then one like this. When we have bad days, we are so bad."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

After a good run of results, Chelsea's season is threatening to unravel again. Despite putting in an encouraging display in the FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester City, they are destined to end the campaign without a trophy and this rout at the hands of Arsenal could put pay their chances of qualifying for Europe – with seventh-placed Manchester United three points ahead of the Blues with six games left. Once again, the pressure is back on Pochettino.

WHAT NEXT?

Chelsea will have to get over this defeat fast as they travel to Champions League-chasing Aston Villa on Saturday night before hosting London rivals Tottenham next Thursday in two tough Premier League fixtures.

Farke must move Rutter aside to finally unleash 5 ft 11 Leeds "threat"

Leeds United face off against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light this evening as they look to close the gap on the top two in the Championship.

The Whites are currently third and seven points behind Ipswich Town in second place ahead of this week's matches and they will be hoping that the Tractor Boys slip up and allow them to move closer with a win on Wearside.

Daniel Farke's side head into this match off the back of a 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park last time out, as goals from Dan James and Crysencio Summerville secured the victory.

The German tactician could, however, make changes to his starting XI as Leeds enter the busy festive schedule of matches that could cause fatigue and muscle injuries.

One player whose performances have dipped of late and could benefit from being moved aside for this game is French centre-forward Georgino Rutter, and that could open the door for Mateo Joseph to finally be unleashed.

The statistics that show why Rutter should be dropped

The 21-year-old magician has enjoyed a phenomenal season for Leeds, with four goals and 16 'big chances' created in 18 Championship starts, but his last two outings have left a lot to be desired.

Against Middlesbrough, the former Hoffenheim man missed one 'big chance, made zero key passes, lost eight of his 15 duels, and only completed 43% of his attempted passes in 82 minutes on the pitch.

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

Rutter followed that up with one 'big chance' missed, one key pass, and a pass success rate of 78% against Blackburn, although his one chance created did allow James to open the scoring.

The talented youngster also failed in a staggering 11 of his 12 attempted dribbles and lost 19 of his 26 duels throughout the match at Ewood Park.

These statistics suggest that the France U21 international is far from at his best and may need a rest, which could open the door for Joseph.

The statistics that show why Joseph should start

The U21 starlet came off the bench against Blackburn for his first senior appearance of the campaign and the head coach must finally unleash him from the start tonight.

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford.

Leeds could instantly ditch Bamford by unleashing 5 ft 11 Thorp Arch whiz

The first-team forward has endured a frustrating season for Daniel Farke’s side so far.

ByDan Emery Oct 29, 2023

Joseph has been a prolific scorer at youth team level for the Whites since the start of last season and could thrive off the services that someone like Crysencio Summerville could provide him with.

The Dutch winger has created ten 'big chances' and made 2.9 key passes per game across 17 Championship outings and could, therefore, unlock Sunderland's defence to provide the striker with the opportunities he needs to find the back of the net.

Leeds forward Mateo Joseph.

Joseph, who former U21 boss Michael Skubala once hailed as "fantastic" and a "threat", has plundered 17 goals and three assists in 23 Premier League 2 matches since the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

The 5 foot 11 marksman has been a regular scorer for the U21s and has seemingly done enough to impress Farke in training, hence his cameo against Blackburn.

Therefore, due to Rutter's poor performances over the last two games, the England U20 international must finally be unleashed from the start against the Black Cats.

Wrexham have reason to celebrate at present as they backed up their National League title triumph in 2023 with a second straight promotion after finishing in the top three of League Two earlier this month. Arsenal keeping tabs on exciting teenage starlet who is available for £1m

Arsenal are monitoring a promising teenage talent as they consider bringing him to the Premier League in 2024, according to a fresh report.

Edu and Arteta building around young players

The Gunners have five squad members in the building as it stands who are aged 22 and under, with four of those in question being regular features of the first-team set-up, in the form of Jurrien Timber, Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli, all of whom are expected to be in north London for the long haul.

Mikel Arteta isn’t afraid to hand a chance to up-and-coming talents no matter their date of birth should they deserve the opportunity to prove what they are capable of, so that should encourage their transfer targets when they are thinking about joining.

Arsenal keen to sign player with "huge developmental potential" in January

He’s been on fire this season…

BySean Markus Clifford Dec 10, 2023

Reading attacking midfielder Caylan Vickers has worked his way up through his club’s various youth ranks to get promoted to their first-team, where he’s so far made a total of 18 senior appearances to date (Transfermarkt – Vickers statistics).

The 18-year-old has caught the eye of several elite managers with his impressive performances since stepping up to League One level, and if the following update is to be believed, Edu has been keeping tabs on the prodigy ahead of January.

Arsenal tracking Vickers ahead of January transfer window

According to The Sun, Arsenal are interested in Vickers, even though right now Real Madrid are the club who are in pole position to secure his services in the new year.

Arsenal have been keeping track of Vickers after he scored and impressed in a 5-2 win over the Gunners' Under-21 team in the Football League Trophy in November.

"However, in a shock move, Real Madrid have moved ahead of Arsenal after opening talks with Reading this week about a January swoop for their talented teenager. Cash-strapped Reading want £1million plus a percentage of any future sell-on deal.”

Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.

Vickers is a top prospect for the future

While Arsenal aren’t leading the race to sign Vickers, Arteta will know that he has bags of potential to offer and he’s already been showing that this season at Reading, so the boss and sporting director should fight to try and hijack this deal in the coming weeks.

Ruben Selles’ starlet has posted 19 contributions (ten assists and nine goals) in 53 appearances since the start of his career, which shows the positive impact that he can make in the final third, but he’s also comfortable playing in several areas of the pitch.

The English teenager is a versatile operator having been deployed in seven different positions following his arrival on the professional scene, including everywhere across the frontline and three roles in the midfield, which is an impressive feat for someone so young.

For all of the fantastic qualities that he possesses for someone still with so much room to grow, Vickers would undoubtedly be a wonderful purchase for the long-term future of the club, so it would be a huge coup if he was to have a change of heart regarding the destination of his new home.

Report: Arsenal "open" to moving for £20m striker "as well as Vlahovic"

Arsenal are thinking about signing a £20 million striker as well as Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, and it's been reported that he's set to leave his current club.

Edu targeting new striker for Arteta

While a lot of noise has surrounded Edu's pursuit of a new midfielder, there are still suggestions that manager Mikel Arteta wants to bring in a new striker next year. ESPN recently reported that Brentford star Ivan Toney is still a target for Arsenal as we head into 2024, with Arteta having just Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus to choose from to lead the line.

The Gunners have also been linked with Vlahovic regularly amid their search for a new forward, as they seek to win a first Premier League title in nearly 20 years.

A proven goalscorer could be the difference between domestic glory and falling just short, especially given Arsenal have to contend with both Man City and Liverpool who are also vying for first place. Club legend Ray Parlour, speaking to TEAMtalk at the start of this month, urged Arteta and Edu to bring in a striker if they wish to maintain their place among England's elite sides.

“Where they are going to be lacking is the striker position," said Parlour. "In teams I played in we had four top strikers so I think that is one area they need to improve.

"I know Jesus is out at the moment and Nketiah did brilliantly getting his hat-trick at the weekend but there is not a lot of options up front.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

“I am sure Arteta, if there is someone available whether on loan or someone who is not playing on a regular basis but who he knows can do a decent job, will be looking for options. When you are chasing a goal you have got to change it up front and they do not have that at the moment. That might be the place they will be looking at."

Given Toney could cost a seismic £100 million to prise away in January, at least according to Sky Sports, it could be wise for Arsenal to consider other options.

Arsenal open to Leonardo deal

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal are open to signing Santos striker Marcos Leonardo "as well as Vlahovic" in their pursuit of new options. It's added that the 20-year-old is set to leave his club for Europe in the new year.

The Brazilian is one of South America's hottest young attackers right now, with reports suggesting Santos are also willing to sell for around £20 million.

Santos striker Marcos Leonardo.

This is considerably less than his marquee release clause and Leonardo is a player of serious potential, having scored 13 goals in 29 of his latest Brazilian Serie A appearances.

"I saw in him a brilliant eye for goal, opportunistic and always well placed," the forward's U13 coach Gustavo Roma said (via Football Transfers).

Gets fouled often

Does not dive into tackles

"He is a really good finisher, he always manages to be in the middle of every middle, he's very mobile and intense, with great instincts. He doesn't wait for the ball to come to him, he moves to create the best positions and finish with a goal, that's why he has so many.

"He was our top scorer in 2016 and even as a substitute last year he was one of our top scorers too. He has an eye for goal, he is a killer and born scorer."

Jason Holder dedicates Test triumph to Alzarri Joseph after death of mother

Jason Holder dedicated West Indies’ stunning victory in the second Test in Antigua to Alzarri Joseph and his family, after the young fast bowler played on despite the overnight death of his mother, Sharon, to help deliver a 10-wicket victory over England, and with it, an unassailable 2-0 series lead.Holder once again led from the front with figures of 4 for 43, including the first-ball wicket of opener Rory Burns, as England shipped all ten of their second-innings wickets for 97 runs to leave West Indies to knock off a desultory target of 14 in the space of 13 balls. But, speaking at the end of a hugely emotional day, Holder admitted that the death of Joseph’s mother, who had been ill for some time with a brain tumour, had forced his team to come together and put on a show in support of their bereaved team-mate.”It’s difficult to describe the feelings,” said Holder. “We started the day with a daunting task, trying to push on our lead, and then we got the news about Alzarri’s mum so we all wanted to rally around one another and we wanted to do it for her.”Joseph, who had claimed the wicket of Joe Denly in the first innings with the first ball he had ever bowled in a Test on his home island, took a full part in the team’s warm-ups, and was then given a long and sympathetic ovation by the crowd when he came out to bat at No.10 in West Indies’ first innings. He scored 7 from 20 balls to help stretch their lead to a precious 119, with players from both sides wearing black armbands as a mark of respect.Joseph then delivered a searing seven-over spell to help devastate England’s prospects of a fightback, bowling Joe Denly with an inducker before having Joe Root caught behind on review, and also having Ben Stokes dropped at slip for what would have been a second-ball duck.”Alzarri was exceptional. It took a lot of heart for him to be on the field today, I think a lot of people wouldn’t have been able to, but credit to him,” said Holder. “The way he ran in this afternoon was exceptional and with a bit more luck he could have got three or four more wickets and could have put in a man-of-the-match performance.”I just want to say condolences to him and his family, it is a tough loss. I came here two or three years ago and visited his mum, she wasn’t doing well at that stage but fought through, so I felt it personally this morning when I got the news that she had passed away.”To see him in tears this morning was even harder, and we came together in the huddle and we just wanted to do it for him and we dedicate this day to him, his mum and his family.”It was up to him if he played. I didn’t want to deprive him of the opportunity to take the field. If he felt he could manage and take the field for the West Indies and perform then I wasn’t going to deprive him of that.”For sure I knew he wanted to do something special for his mum and credit to him, he held his hand up high and did an exceptional job for us.”Although the off-field news helped to galvanise West Indies on a crucial day of the series, the scale of their victory had been hard-earned by their efforts throughout the first two days of the Antigua Test and all throughout their win in Barbados. And Holder, who rose to become the No.1 allrounder in Test cricket on the back of his double-century in the first Test, said that a triumph of this magnitude was richly deserved after the manner in which the team had grown together under his leadership.”I think were hungry for success,” he said. “We’ve been together for a year and a half, two years, and we’ve done some exceptional things, so credit to the boys for sticking to the task.”I wasn’t in Bangladesh [where West Indies lost 2-0 before Christmas] but the boys had a really long hard talk in the dressing room, and it was really needed. We wanted some honesty and to touch on a few areas where we’ve probably shied away in the past.”It’s been an up and down journey, but one I’ve thoroughly enjoyed,” he added. “It’s been challenging but I’m not one to shy away from challenges, I’m proud of myself for the way I’ve stuck it through, because there’ve been some very, very tough days, but credit to my team-mates for helping me get through it. I can’t be here without them. They deserve the credit, and hopefully we can stay together in the years to come.”

Celtic could repeat their Jota masterclass as they eye swoop for £4m whiz

An update has emerged on Celtic and their plans to bolster their attacking options during the upcoming January transfer window…

Celtic transfer news – Tiago Araujo

According to The Telegraph, the Hoops are eyeing up a possible swoop to sign Estoril attacker Tiago Araujo as Brendan Rodgers looks to add to his forward line.

The report claims that the Scottish giants are targeting a move for the winger, who can also operate as a left-back, ahead of the winter window.

It has been revealed, via the Daily Record, that the Portuguese side value him at around £4m and it remains to be seen whether or not Celtic are prepared to meet their demands.

The Bhoys could now repeat the masterclass they played when they snapped up Jota from Portugal if Rodgers can secure a deal for the young whiz.

Jota's record at Celtic

The 24-year-old sensation, who joined on an initial loan from Benfica, was a big hit at Parkhead with his ability to chip in with goals and assists on a consistent basis.

Over the course of two seasons in Scotland, Jota plundered 28 goals and 26 assists in 83 appearances in all competitions for the club. This included 11 goals and 11 assists in the Scottish Premiership for Ange Postecoglou's side during the 2022/23 campaign.

Jota, Celtic forward (now Al- Attihad)

However, Celtic signed him off the back of a return of two goals in 18 matches for Real Valladolid on loan and two goals and three assists in 34 first-team games for Benfica.

He was able to hit his stride in Scottish football and earned himself a mega £25m move to Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad over the summer, which was a significant profit on the £6.5m the Bhoys paid for him a year prior.

Why Araujo could follow in Jota's footsteps

Rodgers could now repeat that blinder for the Hoops in a swoop to sign Araujo, who is another Portuguese attacker who came up through the Benfica academy.

The 22-year-old ace has only managed three goals and four assists in 46 appearances for Estoril the majority of those games have come as a left-back.

However, the young talent did produce eight goals and eight assists in 59 outings for Benfica at youth level, playing as a winger and a left-back at times, and this suggests that there is more to come from him as a threat in the final third.

Estoril defender Tiago Araujo.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig once described him as a "flamboyant" winger and compared him to former Real Madrid and Wales star Gareth Bale, who was also a left-footed forward who started his career as a left-back.

Kulig dubbed Araujo a "superb" winger but added that he could go on to become a "really good" attacking left-back, which speaks to both his quality and versatility.

He is yet to showcase consistent attacking quality at first-team level but still has time and room to improve at the age of 22 and it is worth remembering Jota's aforementioned record prior to his move to Celtic, as the winger had endured a rough time at the top end of the pitch before 2021.

Therefore, the Hoops could repeat the masterclass they played with Jota by bringing the Estoril star in and helping him to develop and hone his skills to fulfill his potential, either as a left-back or a winger, to be the next version of his compatriot at Parkhead.
