Southampton eyeing move for "excellent" gem in final year of his contract

After a shaky start Southampton have finally found their feet in the Championship and look on course to achieve a place in the play-offs come the end of the season at the very least. The Saints suffered the heartbreak of Premier League relegation during the last campaign and are now looking to instantly bounce back to England's top flight.

They did well to keep hold of some key stars during the summer transfer window, despite losing the likes of James Ward-Prowse and Romeo Lavia, and now those at St Mary's can turn their attention towards the January transfer window.

Southampton transfer news

Saints welcomed the likes of Ryan Manning, Ryan Fraser and Ross Stewart in an attempt to bolster Martin's options during the first half of the season. Now that his side have settled, the new manager can look ahead to the winter window for further additions who go hand-in-hand with Southampton's future vision, rather than simply improving the side here and now.

Southampton defender Ryan Manning.

With that said, according to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Southampton are eyeing a move for Darren Robinson. The Saints have reportedly been long-term admirers of the Derby County youngster, whose contract comes to an end in the summer of 2024. The teenage midfielder is considered a future sensation at the Rams and now seems to be the subject of potential bids from both Southampton and Premier League side Aston Villa in the January transfer window.

With Robinson's contract set to expire in the summer, Derby could be wise to cash in whilst they can, potentially handing Southampton or Aston Villa a fairly simple deal.

Southampton should bid for "excellent" Robinson

It's no real surprise that Robinson has attracted interest from both the Championship and Premier League. The 18-year-old looks on the verge of truly bursting into life at the Rams and a move to a bigger club should only result in further progress. Southampton may have to move quickly if they want to land the teenager, however, who may be swayed by Unai Emery's project in the Midlands.

Robinson has unsurprisingly earned plenty of praise during what is still a short career, including from his head of youth at former club Dungannon, Dixie Robinson, who said via Derby County News: “Darren has been excellent ever since he has came in. He got the chance to go over to Fleetwood in the winter and he asked could he train with the first team due to COVID restrictions and to be fair to him he has trained so well he has stayed with the first team since.

"Robbo has also been over at Stoke and most recently Derby where he has decided to sign for on a three year deal. Darren has a great attitude, works tremendously hard, technically very good and he gets about the pitch and I’ve no doubt, with the mindset that he has, I think he will go a long way in the game."

12 football clubs to have suffered points deductions

In November 2023, Everton were handed a record-breaking ten-point Premier League deduction after an independent commission found them to have breached the league’s profit and sustainability rules.

Three weeks prior, The Telegraph reported that the club were awaiting a decision from the commission, and while ten points is a significant blow, it could have been much worse, with a deduction of 12 points being floated around at the time.

Everton released a strong statement at the time condemning the decision. The Toffees joined a long – and infamous – list of professional football clubs to have received point deductions, and with that in mind, we have created a list of 11 clubs that have suffered the same fate.

Everton 2023/24 (8 points) Toffes break new ground

Everton were given a 10-point deduction by the Premier League and dropped from 14th to 19th, from midtable safety to relegation-threatened.

The first murmurings of a points deduction came in March 2023, when the Premier League announced that they had referred the club to an independent commission over ‘an alleged breach of financial fair play rules.’

The crux of the accusation focuses on the league’s profit and loss rules, which stipulate that no club in the top flight can record losses of more than £105m over a three-year period.

Unfortunately for the Toffees, they lost £371.8m over the last three years, which is £266.8m more than they are allowed.

These massive losses are mainly down to player transfers and an inability to sell unwanted players for enough money to cover costs.

In the end, their deduction was reduced to six after an appeal, before being docked two more for further PSR breaches. However, they managed to survive and are now thriving again under David Moyes.

Nottingham Forest 2023/24 (4 points) Reds follow Everton into hot water

Nottingham Forest were docked four points for PSR breaches in March 2024, which saw them drop into the relegation zone.

This punishment was upheld at its appeal, though Forest were still able to survive at Luton Town’s expense.

In the end, Forest secured their safety on the final day and went on to qualify for Europe a year later.

Juventus 2022/23 (10 points) Turin giants miss out on Europe

Not for the first time, Juventus had found themselves at odds with the powers that be in Italian football in 2022/23.

The Old Lady found themselves in hot water over potential wrongdoings linked to their transfer activity. Prosecutors had actually asked for a more significant punishment, but it was deemed that ten points was a sufficient penalty for the team.

The deduction meant that they finished in seventh place and qualified for the Conference League instead of the Champions League, though they were booted out of the competition by UEFA.

Leeds United 2007/08 (15 points) Whites drop to bottom of League One

Following relegation from the Championship the season before, Leeds United were knocked for six when they were deducted 15 points before their 2007/08 League One campaign began.

The reason for the deduction was that the club had exited administration ‘incorrectly’ in the summer. Despite appeals from the club and its fans, the deduction was ultimately upheld when chairmen from the wider Football League voted 64 to 5 in favour of the punishment.

However, the team responded brilliantly to the setback, and the deficit had been entirely eliminated after just seven games. In fact, Leeds made it all the way to the play-off final that season, where they lost to Doncaster Rovers.

Bournemouth 2008/09 (17 points) Cherries begin rise from depths of League Two

In the week leading up to the 2008/09 League Two season, Bournemouth learned that they were to start the campaign on -17 points after the club had been declared insolvent for the second time in as many years.

Things were not looking good for the Cherries, and it only got worse when manager Jimmy Quinn left the side on New Year’s Eve, with them sitting second from bottom and looking all but gone.

In the immediate aftermath of Quinn’s exit, a young Eddie Howe took temporary charge of the club, and seemed to get something out of the players that his predecessor couldn’t in the process. In what was undeniably a huge gamble, the club decided to give Howe, then only 31, the job on a permanent basis.

Somehow, against all the odds, this unknown quantity in the world of management guided Bournemouth from the relegation zone up the league and to safety, ultimately finishing in 21st and on 46 points.

Crystal Palace 2009/10 (10 points) Eagles enter administration trouble

In January 2010, Championship side Crystal Palace were handed a ten-point deduction from the total they had already picked up that season, which meant they went from comfortably mid-table straight into a relegation battle.

The deduction was due to the club going into administration after chairman Simon Jordan failed to find new investment, and to make matters worse, manager Neil Warnock would walk away from the club shortly after the punishment was dished out.

To say things were looking bleak in south London would have been something of an understatement. However, with caretaker manager Paul Hart at the helm, there was still a chance to turn things around, and after some positive momentum towards the back end of the season, the Eagles managed to stave off relegation by the skin of their teeth thanks to a final-day draw away to Sheffield Wednesday.

Arminia Bielefeld 1971/72 (19 points) Bundesliga rocked by match-fixing scandal

The one and only German inclusion on the list, but it’s a good one.

Bundesliga side Arminia Bielefeld were at the centre of a massive match-fixing scandal in 1971 after it had been revealed that some of the league games had been fixed.

While several players were immediately banned from playing football, Arminia were allowed to play out the rest of the season on the condition that every point they earned would then be deducted at the conclusion of the campaign.

We can’t imagine morale was particularly high in the dressing room.

Luton Town 2008/09 (30 points) Hatters doomed by hefty penalty

Luton Town's Kenilworth Road.

Luton Town’s rise to the Premier League was something akin to a footballing miracle.

Back in 2008, the Hatters were about to kick off a miserable season in League Two following back-to-back relegations from the Championship and League One when they were hit with a deduction of 10 points.

This initial deduction was from the FA for financial misconduct, and while this was certainly bad, it would have been manageable. However, just after receiving that ten-point deduction, the club were subject to another 20-point deduction for failing to reach an insolvency agreement ‘that satisfied HMRC’.

Ultimately, the club had to start the season with a massive deficit of 30 points to their name, and while they did succumb to relegation, they picked up 13 wins and 56 points along the way, which should have been good enough for 15th place.

So, when people describe their rise up to the Premier League as a miracle or a fairytale, we reckon they are correct.

Middlesbrough 1996/97 (3 points) Forfeit decision costs Boro dearly

Now, this is a bit of an odd one, but it turned out to have a massive impact on the league table.

In December 1996, Middlesbrough were set to play a Premier League game against Blackburn Rovers, but there was one problem: they didn’t have a fit team.

Manager Bryan Robson decided to call the game off, and even though he thought he had the blessing of the FA to do so, Boro were docked three points.

You might not think three points are all that meaningful in the grand scheme of things, but in this case, they really were.

Come the end of the season, Boro found themselves down in 19th place and on 39 points. Had they picked up just three more, they would have finished in 14th.

Lazio 2005/06 (30 points) Biancocelesti survive amid Calciopoli chaos

We couldn’t make a list of famous point deductions and not bring up the Calciopoli scandal, arguably the most prominent footballing scandal since the turn of the millennium and the biggest round of points deductions we can think of.

While the whole situation was quite complex, the gist of it was that several high-profile clubs in Italian football were accused of attempting to get favourable decisions from the referees ahead of their games.

The four most prominent offenders were Juventus, Lazio, Milan and Fiorentina. We haven’t included Juventus’ punishment on this list as they were simply relegated from the league, still on 91 points, so it’s not really a good example of points deductions; the other three sides, however, faced severe points penalties.

Lazio, for example, were stripped of 30 points and saw their sixth-placed finish turn into a 16th-placed finish, in which they only avoided relegation by three points and a good goal difference.

The Rome-based outfit also saw their qualification for the UEFA Cup removed, and their place was taken by Livorno, who are now in Serie D.

Wolves battling to keep “attacking” star as mega club makes him top target

Wolverhampton Wanderers could be set to lose one of their top stars next year, with a fresh report revealing that he’s emerged as a top target for an admirer in January.

Wolves let 11 players leave Molineux

The Old Gold sanctioned the permanent sales of 11 stars over the summer, with some of the bigger names to leave for good being the likes of Ruben Neves, Matheus Nunes and Raul Jimenez, but they aren’t the only ones who could soon be heading for the exit door.

Alongside Tommy Doyle who could return to Manchester City following his loan, Bruno Jordao will have reached the expiration of his deal at the end of the season (Wolves contracts), so should he not put pen to paper on fresh terms, he looks set to depart.

Top Premier League club now interested in "fantastic" Wolves star

This could be a huge blow for Gary O’Neil…

ByTom Cunningham Nov 26, 2023

Back in 2021, Rayan Ait-Nouri joined from Angers, and he’s established himself as a regular feature under Gary O’Neil having started 12 games from the opening 13 of the new season in the Premier League (WhoScored – Ait-Nouri statistics).

The Algerian left-back has therefore recently been attracting significant interest from Liverpool and Chelsea, but if the following update is to be believed, the 22-year-old has now also emerged as a target for a high-profile club overseas, more specifically in Ligue 1.

PSG plotting swoop for Rayan Ait-Nouri

According to Sports Zone, Paris Saint-Germain are interested in Ait-Nouri and have highlighted him as their top target ready for when the transfer window opens in January.

Rayan Ait-Nouri is Luis Campos' number one choice for the winter transfer window at the left-back position. Jorge Mendes, for his part, refused. The agent wants long-term playing time guarantees.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers defenderRayan Ait-Nouri.

O'Neil needs to keep "attacking" star Ait-Nouri

Being a left-back, Ait-Nouri is naturally stronger in the defensive aspect of his game, which he’s proven so far this season by making 30 tackles, which is more than any of his fellow teammates (FBRef – Wolves statistics), showing what a standout performer he is.

However, Montreuil’s native is also capable of making a positive impact at the opposite end of the pitch, having posted 12 contributions, eight assists and four goals, in 93 appearances during his time at the club (Transfermarkt – Ait-Nouri statistics), showing his desire to burst down the flank and dribble past his marker to create chances.

Thanks to this, O’Neil’s £10k-per-week earner (Wolves salaries), has the versatility to operate in his usual role, higher up in the midfield and even out wide on the flank as a winger, so he’s a really useful option for the manager to have in the building considering the cover he can provide in positions outside of his own.

As hailed by journalist Josh Bunting, Ait-Nouri is indeed an “attacking” player and the thought of losing him is likely to be a huge blow, so it’s important that chiefs do everything they can to fend off interest and retain his services beyond the upcoming transfer window in January.

Deandra Dottin stars as West Indies seal last-over win

West Indies squeezed out England in a thrilling finish at the Daren Sammy Stadium to claim top spot in Group A and set up a semi-final against Australia

The Report by Alan Gardner18-Nov-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsWest Indies squeezed out England in a thrilling finish at the Daren Sammy Stadium to claim top spot in Group A and a semi-final against Australia – replaying their encounter in the final of the last tournament two years ago in Kolkata. England will take on India, winners of Group B, knowing that they must make rapid improvements with the bat and in the field despite scrapping to keep the possibility of victory alive until the final over.Australia hit with over rate fine

Australia have been fined for their slow over-rate in the Group B defeat to India in Guyana on Saturday. Meg Lanning’s side were found to be one over short by match referee Richie Richardson.
After Lanning pled guilty to the charge, Australia’s players were fined 10% of their match fees. Lanning’s fine was doubled to 20%, and the captain could face a suspension if Australia commit a similar over-rate offence within the next 12 months.
The charge was brought by the two on-field umpires in the game at Providence Stadium, Gregory Brathwaite and Wayne Knights, the third umpire Sue Redfern and fourth umpire Shaun George.

On a surface that made life difficult for fluent scoring, West Indies were indebted to an innings of 46 from Deandra Dottin and 45 from Shemaine Campbelle – the latter dismissed with just three runs needed – as the reigning champions showed their composure to claim a fourth win from as many games in the group stage.Defeat was hard on Anya Shrubsole, who picked up 3 for 10 with the ball after playing a vital part with the bat, her innings of 29 from 26 helping to resurrect England in a seventh-wicket partnership with Sophia Dunkley. Dottin, who was named Player of the Match, claimed two more wickets to become the tournament’s leading wicket-taker but England fought back impressively to ensure a game that only had group positions at stake, with both sides having already qualified, gave the packed crowd a worthy finish in St Lucia’s penultimate game. The biggest difference between the teams was the fielding, as demonstrated during a frantic finale. With West Indies needing 18 from 13 balls, substitute fielder Fran Wilson dropped Campbelle at long-on, with the chance going straight through her hands and away for four. Dunkley then failed to get near a skied slog from Campbelle in the penultimate over, before Amy Jones dropped Britney Cooper from the final ball (Lauren Winfield then ran out Cooper with a direct hit to partially atone). That left five runs required from the last six balls and although Shrubsole had Campbelle taken brilliantly at deep square leg by Danielle Wyatt from her second delivery, Kycia Knight thrashed the next through point to seal a win raucously celebrated by the home supporters.Deandra Dottin slog-sweeps during her 46•ICC via Getty

A third-wicket stand of 68 between Dottin and Campbelle laid the platform for West Indies, though the pursuit was not without its nervy moments. Dottin got into block-or-bash mode, launching four sixes over the leg side but also stacking up dot balls as England sought containment after Shrubsole’s two early strikes. Campbelle began slowly, too, scoring one from her first nine balls, but began to tick along nicely before taking charge of the chase once Dottin had holed out to deep square leg off Kirstie Gordon.Although they were defending what looked a meagre total, England were given the perfect start when Shrubsole – who finished her previous appearance by taking a hat-trick – struck with her first and fourth balls, castling both Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor with trademark inswingers.Dottin got going with a towering blow off Natalie Sciver but was unable to rotate the strike against England’s spinners. She did however twice launch Danielle Hazell for sixes over the midwicket; Hazell, brought into the side for Linsey Smith, was the one bowler unable to provide captain Heather Knight with control, her four overs costing 39.After Dottin fell aiming one slog-sweep too many, Sophie Ecclestone bowled Natasha McLean to leave West Indies needing 26 from the last three overs. However, Hazell’s next went for 12, including the drop of Campbelle on 39, as they faltered in the final exchanges.England’s effort was undermined from the off by the loss of regular wickets, with only three batsmen managing to make it into double-figures. West Indies fielded superbly, and looked to be in line for a simple chase with England reeling at 50 for 6 in the 11th over before Dunkley and Shrubsole combined to revive the innings with an partnership full of hard running and the occasional hearty thump. The damage was done at the top by Shakera Selman’s opening spell, which saw her bowl her allocation up front for figures of 4-0-15-2. She struck in the opening over, Chinelle Henry setting the tone for West Indies in the field by taking a leaping catch to dismiss Wyatt.Tammy Beaumont, who was dropped on 12, was the only member of the top six to make a significant contribution, and her dismissal for 23 saw England lose momentum entirely as three wickets went down for two runs in seven balls. Heather Knight, who made 6 from 13 before falling lbw to Dottin, did at least spend some time in the middle; unlike Winfield, who was brilliantly run out from her second ball by Cooper’s direct hit.Dunkley, playing her maiden international innings in her third game, then showed some of the Kia Super League form that saw her selected for the squad despite being uncapped. But she was smartly held at long-off, by Henry again, and Dottin’s horizontal grab to remove Shrubsole from the final ball of the innings suggested West Indies were not in the mood to be beaten.

#BBL08 chatter: Scorchers lose David Willey to shoulder injury

Willey suffers shoulder injury
January 22Perth Scorchers import David Willey has been ruled out of the remainder of the Big Bash League with a left shoulder injury. He will fly home on Tuesday night for further assessment and treatment in the UK.It is understood the injury is not serious at this stage but has been bothering Willey, the England allrounder, since the Scorchers’ loss to the Hobart Hurricanes on December 30 in Launceston. He was ruled out of the Scorchers latest match against the Hurricanes last Friday night and the ECB medical staff have advised him to return home.Willey has endured a frustrating tournament form-wise with both bat and ball coming off limited cricket in the lead-up. He was shuffled through multiple roles with both bat and ball. He batted in three different spots in four innings, including opening the batting, and his bowling role changed regularly in the games he played.Willey has not played for England since the India series last July after a back injury ruled him out of the tour of Sri Lanka. The Scorchers do welcome back some key Australian internationals for their next match against the Sydney Thunder on Thursday at Perth Stadium. Shaun Marsh and Jason Behrendorff both return from ODI duty.Wicketkeeper batsman Sam Whiteman has been ruled out for two to three weeks with a quad injury he suffered in the loss to the Hurricanes. But Josh Inglis appears to have overcome a broken toe and looks set to slot in as a like for like replacement.Vince replaces Denly at Sixers
January 11Sydney Sixers have roped in James Vince for the remainder of the season as a like-for-like replacement for fellow England batsman Joe Denly, who has been called up by England for the Test series in the West Indies later this month.Vince, who recently played for Auckland in the Super Smash in New Zealand, had earlier turned out in the 2017-18 BBL season for the Sydney Thunder. He is set join the Sixers squad ahead of their match against the Perth Scorchers on Sunday at the Optus Stadium.”I’m extremely excited about joining up with the Sixers,” Vince said. “The Big Bash is a fantastic competition to be a part of. The guys are playing some great cricket at the minute and are in a strong position heading into the second half of the tournament.”Hopefully I can hit the ground running and make some good contributions that will help us go all the way this year. Sydney is a fantastic place and the SCG is an incredible ground, I can’t wait to get started.”The Sixers are currently third on the points table and have seven more games left in the league stage.Mark Waugh hits at BBL batting
January 4The quality of batting in this year’s BBL has provoked debate. Melbourne Renegades have yet to register an individual half-century in five matches and on Thursday limped to 9 for 126 against Adelaide Strikers. Not for the first time it was spin causing the major problems as Liam O’Connor, Rashid Khan and Colin Ingram proved a handful. It was enough for Mark Waugh to term the standard of batting against spin as “embarrassing” although he had also noted a couple of days previously that the state of some of the wickets wasn’t helping.Australia had an awful time against spin in the UAE last year when they played three T20Is then struggled against Kuldeep Yadav in the India series in November. Their next T20Is are set to be in India during the limited-overs tour which starts next month so life is unlikely to get easier.Maddinson nears comeback
January 4Nic Maddinson is closing in on a comeback from the broken arm he suffered in the Sheffield Shield last month having surprised himself at the speed of his recovery.Maddinson needed surgery after being struck by a short ball from Jhye Richardson and was unsure whether he would hit the surgeon’s timescale of a return in around four weeks. But he appears on course for that with a comeback looking likely when Melbourne Stars face Perth Scorchers at the MCG on Wednesday.”It seems to be pulling up better and better after everything I do,” he told the . So I thought, why not push it a bit harder and try and play.”

Spurs favourites to sign "exciting" Iling-Junior with Levy’s helpful contact

Tottenham Hotspur are "in the front row" to sign one player in January, and chairman Daniel Levy's reliable contact could help them secure a deal.

Spurs transfer plans for 2024

With the assistance of new sporting director Johan Lange, who began his tenure at Spurs early last month, Levy and co are reportedly keen to back manager Ange Postecoglou with fresh faces next month.

As reported by Sky this week, Tottenham are still very keen on bringing in a new centre-back with Micky van de Ven's injury and Cristian Romero's recent suspension exposing their real lack of options.

Levy now ready to make Spurs bid for player and offer him "monstrous" wages

He’s “unlikely” to refuse Tottenham’s proposal.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 8, 2023

Spurs have identified Jarrad Branthwaite as a top target in that regard, according to reports this week, but the Everton starlet isn't alone. Postecoglou's side are also very keen on Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi and Nice's Jean-Clair Todibo, though all three defenders may be difficult to prise away mid-season (Sky).

Meanwhile, there are some suggestions that Tottenham haven't abandoned plans to bring in a new striker and replace Harry Kane. The north Londoners are reportedly ready to make a 2024 bid for Juventus star Dusan Vlahovic in this regard.

You could argue there are more pressing needs right now, though, like signing a new defender and bringing in more wide options. Indeed, Tottenham are apparently keen to sign a winger, leading to recent Spurs interest in Jota from Al-Ittihad and Juventus sensation Samuel Iling-Junior.

Juventus forwardSamuel Iling-Junior.

The latter player has struggled for consistent opportunities under Massimiliano Allegri in Turin this season, leading to speculation over his future.

Iling-Junior is a widely reported target for Spurs, with Italian newspaper Tuttosport sharing an update on their pursuit.

Spurs "in the front row" for Iling-Junior

According to their information, Tottenham are "in the front row" to sign Iling-Junior in January, as they enter pole position ahead of Brentford, Fulham and Marseille.

While the Bees and Marco Silva's side have already started exploring a deal for the Englishman, Tuttosport explains that Spurs could have a real advantage thanks to Levy's close ties with a reliable contact.

Juventus forwardSamuel Iling-Junior.

Levy's "go-to" agent, Frank Timboli, boasts an excellent relationship with Tottenham's chief, as the pair have worked on numerous transfers over the years. He leads CAA Base, who currently represent Illing-Junior, and it is believed this factor could help Spurs to win the race for his signature.

Called an "exciting" player by reporter Dean Jones, TNT Sports journalist Michele Neri has also likened him somewhat to AC Milan star Rafael Leao.

AC Milan forwardRafael Leao.

“Iling-Junior is a very quick player, who loves to take on opposing full-backs and attack the vertical spaces, in a very direct way,” Neri explained to TNT Sports.

“He is a left winger who can also play as a right winger if needed. He has a great sense for dribbling and a speed from a standing start that other Juventus players do not have.

“In these qualities you can absolutely see shades of Rafael Leao when the AC Milan superstar was a bit younger."

Bellingham has slowed down of late, registering just three goals through his last 15 appearances, with former Blancos star Julio Baptista telling the of that slight dip: “I think he has adapted very well and he had an extraordinary start to his career at Madrid. Perhaps his level has dropped a little over the last month or so but maybe that is just the accumulation of games he has played. He has played a lot of minutes and sometimes players start to feel that in the legs, they are only human.”
