Manchester United are thinking of turning their attention to Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani, according to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sportsmole).

It is thought that the Old Trafford giants are desperate to sign a centre-back, with Leicester City’s Harry Maguire still the club’s number one target.

However, Manchester United aren’t the only side interested in Rugani, with rivals Arsenal having reportedly offered to take the player on a two-year loan.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are already locked in talks with Juventus over a potential swap deal involving Romelu Lukaku and attacker Paulo Dybala.

Links with Rugani could be put down to three different reasons. The first one is the injury to defender Eric Bailly, who limped off during the club’s pre-season win over Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The injury is set to keep the Ivorian out of action for up to five months.

The second is the club’s pursuit of Maguire, who is still being valued at around £85m. It is being reported by Sky Sports that the Foxes are refusing to budge on their valuation of the England centre-half, with the Manchester United willing to pay £80m.

The third is the club’s poor defensive record during all competitions last season, where the club conceded 70 goals. This included 54 goals in the Premier League, which is a club-record during the Premier League era.

Rugani himself has endured a frustrating time at the Turin-based outfit, having made only 20 appearances in all competitions last season. And with the signing of Matthijs de Ligt, it is thought the 25-year-old may need to leave to find regular football.

A move for Rugani doesn’t necessarily fit the mould of a player Manchester United are trying to sign in the transfer market. The club have spent all summer being linked to British talent, like Sean Longstaff and Maguire, as well as having signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James.

As well as not being the right mould, Rugani’s statistical comparisons aren’t too favourable alongside the club’s current central defensive options. Compared to him, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones all have more or similar interceptions, tackles, and clearances made per game (via WhoScored).

Rugani doesn’t match the profile of what the club are trying to carry out this summer and has shown he isn’t much better than the current options. So, he should not be signed by the club, who should instead pay the extra £5m to Leicester for Maguire.

Newcastle have officially announced the signing of free agent Andy Carroll.

What’s the story?

The Magpies confirmed the return of the giant Geordie on Thursday afternoon, accompanying the announcement with the message “Carroll Comes Home”.

“It feels very good. My friends and family are here, and it’s the club that I support – it is home,” the 30 year-old has said.

He has signed an initial one-year deal, with the club exercising caution around a player who has suffered through a ridiculously long list of injuries.

As he was a free agent, the club will not pay a transfer fee, taking their net spend for the summer window to around £30m.

Verdict

It’s no surprise to see Carroll is ecstatic to be back on Tyneside, where the 6 foot 4 striker made his name in professional football.

He scored 33 times and added 21 assists in 90 appearances during his first spell as a Magpie, and while Joelinton’s position as the club’s record signing surely nails him on as a starter, Carroll is an excellent plan B.

The former England international is an absolute handful for defenders when he is fully fit, sitting fourth all-time in the contest for most headed goals in the Premier League, behind only Peter Crouch, Olivier Giroud and Christian Benteke.

With Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin, two wingers with electric speed, both arriving at St. James’ Park this year, one doesn’t have to think too long about what Steve Bruce’s plan for the striker will be.

Any time the Magpies are in need of a goal you can count on Carroll coming on and making a nuisance of himself, averaging a whopping 6.2 aerial wins per game in various competitions throughout his career.

And after aerial threat Salomon Rondon departed the club this summer, the capture of another player with the ability to match centre-backs in the air was an absolute necessity. Mark this one down as a big win for the Magpies’ transfer team.

Lots of Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to discuss a report stating that Mamadou Sakho held ‘clear the air’ talks with Wilfried Zaha and the rest of the squad.

The France international summoned the Ivorian and the rest of his teammates on the eve of their opening Premier League game to ensure that Zaha continues to give 100% for the club, in the aftermath of the forward handing in a transfer request the day before the deadline.

According to the report, Zaha has now agreed to put his differences with the Palace board members aside in order to be fully focused on the team.

The 26-year-old had told the club that he wanted a move to Everton after the Merseysiders made no secret of their interest in him, having submitted numerous bids for the former Manchester United man.

Palace stood firm on their valuation of the winger and he will now remain at Selhurst Park until at least January, when the window will then reopen once again.

Xherdan Shaqiri recently admitted that he was far from happy with his current situation at Liverpool.

Indeed, the 27-year-old has only played 11 minutes of first-team football in the early weeks of the 2019-20 campaign, with his sole outing coming in the Community Shield against Manchester City earlier this month.

Shaqiri has not featured in any of Liverpool’s three games since, though, and there is currently a bit of speculation surrounding his future.

On Wednesday afternoon, Liverpool’s official Twitter account posted a video of Sadio Mane, Joel Matip and Shaqiri showcasing their skills.

And the footage led to a number of the Merseyside club’s fans showing their support for Shaqiri, with many using the hashtag #FreeShaq.

It will certainly be interesting to see whether the Switzerland international plays any part in this weekend’s huge Premier League game against Arsenal.

The transfer window has been closed in England for a number of weeks now, but that hasn’t stopped Slaven Bilic adding to his West Brom side.

The Croatian has snapped up veteran goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi on a contract until the end of this current season.

Al-Habsi has been plying his trade for Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League for the past two seasons, after departing Championship side Reading following their playoff final defeat to Huddersfield in May 2017.

The 37-year-old shot-stopper has made 228 appearances across England’s top two tiers, playing for Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic and Reading.

He becomes the third option between the sticks for Bilic with Sam Johnstone his first-choice, starting all five Championship matches, whilst Jonathan Bond has worked with the Oman international before at Reading.

Celtic left-back Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo has given a rather entertaining interview to Celtic TV, including some huge praise for his captain Scott Brown.

What’s the word?

It’s no secret that it’s been a tough few weeks for Brown.

The Hoops skipper has given away two penalties already this season, much to the disgust of fans, and it is reaching that time of a player’s career when he needs to be rotated, no longer the first name on the team-sheet in every single fixture, or at least that’s what the fans think.

He delivered a vintage Broony performance against Rangers though, and it seems nobody was more appreciative of that than Bolingoli.

“He’s a big leader, he’s a legend for me,” said the left-back, signed for around £3m this summer.

“The way how he plays every game, you can only look up to him. For sure in the last game, in the derby, one moment he went in a duel and I was looking at him like ‘damn that’s a real captain’!

“Also outside the pitch he’s a cool guy, a nice guy. He helped me a lot also, he is cool, he laughs, he gives really a positive motivation.”

Brilliant leadership

If you needed another reminder that Brown is the perfect captain, which you probably didn’t, this is it.

Neil Lennon admitted earlier this campaign that Bolingoli was “lacking a bit of confidence”, and then along comes the skipper.

The fact that Bolingoli, a non-native English speaker who is, based on Lennon’s admission, finding it somewhat of a shock adjusting to the football culture in Scotland, speaks so fondly of his midfield stalwart tells you everything you need to know.

It is quite regular for various branches to form within a squad based on nationality or language, even a tight-knit one – just look at Liverpool’s Brazilians – and it would be easy to assume Brown and Bolingoli aren’t exactly going to be best mates, even if they are good teammates.

However, it is clear from the smile on the left-backs face as he discusses his “cool” captain that while Brown may be declining slightly on the pitch, his leadership skills have never been better, and whether it be a bit of banter or some classic motivation, he is the perfect man to have leading a squad that just underwent a mass overhaul (11 in, 11 out).
