Liverpool: Klopp has set an example of how teams should spend in the transfer market

It’s safe to say Liverpool until recently haven’t had the best of transfer strategies.

For every Luis Suarez and James Milner that has succeeded at the club, there’s an Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing that has failed to make the grade and been a dark stain on the transfer history of Liverpool.

But since Jurgen Klopp’s arrival at Merseyside, the flow of bad transfers seems to have stopped for the most part. Out of the 13 players the German has brought to the club, none of them can really be labelled as total flops at the club.

FSG must be in awe of the genius transfer strategy that Jurgen Klopp has adopted as he’s saved them a lot of money by signing all the right players for low prices, and future sales could certainly make the club a healthy profit.

Although Ragnar Klavan and Lorius Karius have been infamous signings in the history of Liverpool, the duo still had good patches at their time at the club and contributed to the long-term success of where the Reds are now. The two players also cost the club a combined fee of £10 million, or about one-sixth of what Chelsea paid for Alvaro Morata.

Indeed, getting players for cheap is something Klopp and the transfer committee have been excellent at. Mohamed Salah signed for a reported fee of £34 million, whilst his wing partner Sadio Mane was signed for a similar price.

Andy Robertson, who was signed for just £10 million after Hull City were relegated down to the Championship, has developed into one of the best fullbacks in the Premier League and proven to be another transfer success story with Klopp.

Although some signings have been underwhelming so far, such as Naby Keita and Marko Grujic, these are players who will grow the longer the stay at the club and continue their development at Liverpool.

Klopp’s use of the transfer market and ability to spot cheap signings where other teams would not have is something that clubs in the Premier League should be adopting in their strategies for picking up players.

The German’s use of signing talent from relegated teams, in particular, is something that clubs have been undervaluing in this era of football transfers, but with the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum, Xherdan Shaqiri and the aforementioned Robertson all coming in for cheap and making a considerable impact at Liverpool, this might be something that changes this summer.

Spurs fans want Tielemans interest revived

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans want the club to revive their interest in Youri Tielemans in the summer after his superb goal for Leicester City against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The Belgian youngster netted an excellent strike as the Foxes ran out 4-1 winners against the already-relegated Terriers.

The Daily Telegraph reported in January that Spurs were considering a swoop for the player, who eventually moved to the King Power Stadium on loan from AS Monaco.

Since his move to the club, Tielemans has scored twice – the second goal coming on Saturday – and laid on a total of four assists in just seven games.

His latest display has seen some Spurs fans debate the club’s failure to bring in the midfielder – they did not sign a player at the turn of the year, nor last summer, despite Mousa Dembele departing in January – with others hopeful he could end up moving to the north London club during the summer transfer window…

Rangers: Not shelling out on Ryan Kent shows a lack of ambition

Rangers fans can see a return to their former glory is nearing, but they’ll never fulfil their potential if they refuse to pay up for players like Ryan Kent.

He’s had a great season for the Gers, playing 22 times, scoring and assisting six each, and Steven Gerrard has made it no secret he wants him to return to Ibrox next season. However, it doesn’t look like the club are willing to put their money where their mouth is.

Ahead of their game against Motherwell on Sunday, Gerrard said: “I think it would unlikely be a permanent move. The numbers being spoken about, I’m out” (quotes from the Scottish Sun). But why is he out? If he wants to build a dynasty at Rangers, he should be demanding the club pay the £12m being spoken about in the Sun.

He’s more confident of securing the winger on loan again, but what if Liverpool don’t want to loan him out next season? It appears Rangers would just roll over and then have to find another player, who would perhaps cost a similar amount and then acclimatise as Kent already has.

If the club really can’t afford to pay the required fee, and don’t get him back on loan, it’s just symbolic of how the club will never be able to compete with Celtic again under the current ownership structure. Gerrard’s moved the club forward, but there’s only so much he can do when the finances just aren’t there.

Signing players on loan is a good short-term solution to this issue, but it means Gerrard will find it hard to build up a team to consistently challenge for the title. How can they do that if their key players are disappearing back to their parent club or other sides every season?

Rangers fans, what do you think it will take to finally challenge for the Scottish Premiership again? Join the discussion by commenting below…

Fan Theory: Jesse Lingard better suited to deeper midfield role at Manchester United

[ad_pod ]Manchester United avoided a fifth defeat in their previous six matches as they narrowly beat West Ham United 2-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday. The Red Devils were pretty much second-best throughout however as they relied upon two Paul Pogba penalties to see them over the line against Manuel Pellegrini’s men, with Jesse Lingard getting the nod on the right-hand side of a 4-2-3-1 formation. The England international has played in a range of positions in recent weeks including attacking midfield, winger and behind the striker, but he is really struggling for goals and assists. In fact, he hasn’t found the net in the Premier League since December and has just the one assist in his previous 10 top flight appearances despite often playing in an advanced role for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. One United supporter on Twitter believes that the 27-year-old may be more suited to a deeper role in the middle of the park, but are they right?

The positives

Lingard often gets lost out wide and doesn’t have the pace and skill to take opposition full-backs on – as proved to be the case against Arthur Masuaku at the weekend – but he wouldn’t particularly need those traits in the middle of the park.

In that area of the pitch you rely more on your stamina and your ability to win the ball – no United player won more tackles than the Englishman’s five on the home on Saturday, as per WhoScored.

The 27-year-old playing in a deeper role could potentially allow Paul Pogba – who once again looked lost in a less advanced position against the Irons – to move further forward.

The negatives

At home playing Lingard there could probably work as United do most of the attacking and look to break teams down, but it would likely be a different story on the road.

He may well have a never-say-die attitude but you need that defensive nous at all times against bigger teams on the road for example, and it would certainly be a risk by Solskjaer to deploy him there regularly.

The Three Lions star is also prone to being bullied by some opponents and isn’t always the greatest in possession, and that would be a worry if he was in such a key area.

The verdict

Playing Lingard out wide clearly isn’t working as he just doesn’t have the traits to be a successful winger, so something needs to change if he is going to carry on being a regular in the XI.

Perhaps the answer is to leave him on the substitutes’ bench for a few matches, but it certainly seems as though he needs to play central to get some form back.

Given he isn’t prolific in terms of goals and assists, perhaps the deeper role where he can win tackles for his team is the right way to go now.

Everton: Marco Silva right to snub greedy Marcos Rojo last summer

Everton have an exciting project ahead, but they won’t be taken for fools in the transfer market, and their rejection of Marcos Rojo proves just that.

When Manchester City were aiming for the top, they paid stupid money to attract players who wouldn’t usually want to play for them. Duncan Castles on the Transfer Window Podcast (via The Daily Star) revelation’s that Everton brushed off Rojo’s £160,000 wage demands suggests they’re not going to take that route.

City have become harsher with their own wage bill recently, not following through on Alexis Sanchez for that reason. Everton are seemingly doing that early on and it’ll stand them in good stead for the future. They need to invest, but only when it makes sense.

On this occasion, it didn’t.

Rojo, like most United signings post-Sir Alex Ferguson, has been a flop. It’s reported United wanted to get rid of his last summer and Everton were interested. It’s very easy for fans to say “just pay the money”, but what’s the point if it wouldn’t be a good investment?

He’s 29-years-old and reportedly on a weekly wage of around £160k so the signing would have been short-term to begin with. Then, even in the short term, it’s hard to see how the club would get their money’s worth out of him anyway. Yes, they need a replacement in that position, but there are better players who would demand much less.

Marco Silva surely has high ambitions for the club and with a new stadium on the way, things are looking up. They must make sure they keep their heads in the transfer market though, because otherwise agents or clubs will try and take advantage of their ambition and hold them to ransom.

Newcastle fans desperate for Perez to return for Liverpool game

[ad_pod ]

Ayoze Perez scored his 12th goal of the season (11 in the Premier League) in the 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion at the AMEX Stadium on Saturday.

The Spaniard collected a knock-down from Salomon Rondon and hammered the ball into the roof of the net, but his celebration was muted as he was carrying a knock and soon after Rafael Benitez had to take him off.

The injury to the 25-year-old occurred after he had danced past a few Brghton players and then skipped over Shane Duffy but the Irishman caught him on the hip and Perez couldn’t continue.

Newcastle fans were quick to respond to Perez’s post-match tweet in hope that he will be fit, one fan said “get that hip sorted for Saturday bonny lad” and another added “get well soon Ayo.”

With a potentially title deciding match at St James’s Park on Saturday Newcastle will hope that Perez is fit so they can have a say.
