Transfer recruitment at Liverpool has changed quite a bit recently, hasn’t it? Gone are the days of trying to strengthen for another title push by bringing in the likes of Rickie Lambert, Javier Manquillo Divock Origi and Alberto Moreno, just to name a few.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been formidable in their recruitment to bolster a title challenge this season, with the acquisitions of Alisson, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita all proving their worth or showing glimpses of what they are capable of in the future already.

As the transfer situation has altered significantly at Anfield now, with that being said though, let’s take a look are two of the worst Liverpool signings in the past five years…

Lazar Markovic

Markovic was brought to Merseyside for a reported £20m when he was just 20-years-old in 2014.

The Serbian failed to live up to his potential at Liverpool with numerous ineffective performances in his debut season. The multiple loans that followed could not help push him in the direction either.

Markovic is now back in the Premier League at Fulham, but the deal is only a short-term one.

Mario Balotelli

During that summer that Markovic joined Liverpool, alongside a handful of players who just did not fit the bill to challenge for a League title, a gamble was taken on someone who had been inconsistent in the League with Manchester City.

Mario Balotelli was signed for a reported £16m from AC Milan, but, like Markovic and so many others, failed to live up to expectations.

The Italian international netted just four times in 28 games in all competitions, with only one of those goals being scored in the League.

His time at Anfield was one to forget for both parties, but he has now found his feet at Marseille whereby, following a January move, he has five goals in seven games.

Even if Ralph Hasenhuttl doesn’t keep Southampton in the Premier League this season, he can hold his head high regardless considering the excellent job he has done with the younger players in the squad.

The Austrian can be credited with getting James Ward-Prowse and Jan Bednarek to a consistently high level while he has also given Yan Valery a consistent starting berth. Now, the latter has been rewarded with a new deal for his exploits.

The impressive defender has netted two goals for Saints – both of which have come in the last two games – and has brilliantly replaced the loaned-out Cedric Soares on the right.

There had surely been some concerns amongst the Saints faithful that they could lose the youngster far too easily if they were relegated – his previous deal would expire next summer – but he is now contracted until 2023.

Given the impression he has made in the Premier League already, there would likely have been plenty of the interest from big clubs in the summer so the decision to commit his future to Southampton is a major one, but surely the right move.

من جانبه أصدر يوفنتوس بيانًا يؤكد خلاله أنه سيتواجد في ملعب المباراة لخوضها في الموعد المحدد من قبل رابطة الدوري الإيطالي (طالع بيان يوفنتوس).

ووفقًا للتقارير الخاصة برابطة الدوري الإيطالي فإن المباراة ستقام في موعدها، وفي حالة تخلف بعثة نابولي عن السفر، سيكون القرار متروكًا للقاضي الرياضي والاتحاد الايطالي لكرة القدم بشأن احتساب الثلاث نقاط ليوفنتوس أم لا، حال عدم سفر لاعبي نابولي (طالع التفاصيل من هنا).

وأكدت وكالة الأنباء أن السلطات المحلية لم تمنع لاعبي نابولي من السفر لتورينو لمواجهة يوفنتوس.

إذا لم يكن هناك حظر أو أمر بعدم السفر فسيكون اختيار نابولي هو عدم حضور المباراة، مما يتركهم عرضة لخسارة المباراة 3-0.

يعود ذلك إلى أن بروتوكول رابطة الدوري الإيطالي هو نفس بروتوكول “يويفا”، طالما أن الفريق لديه 13 لاعبًا متاحًا بما في ذلك حارس المرمى، يمكن المضي قدمًا وخوض المباراة.

وعلى الرغم من وجود قدر كبير من التكهنات، إلا أن نابولي لم يصدر أي بيان حول الموقف على الإطلاق، بما في ذلك حقيقة أنهم لم يسافروا هذا المساء كما كان متوقعًا.

According to the Daily Mail, West Ham United are interested in signing Alaves centre-back Guillermo Maripan in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the word, then?

Maripan is a 6ft 4in centre-back who has impressed for Alaves this season.

Indeed, the 24-year-old has scored twice in 22 La Liga appearances during the 2018-19 campaign, helping his Basque club into fifth position in the table.

According to the Daily Mail, West Ham ‘are showing interest’ in Maripan, but they will face competition from Roma for the powerful defender.

The Hammers have not exactly been water-tight defensively this season, conceding 46 times in their 31 Premier League games, including three against Huddersfield Town at the weekend.

And therefore it is not too much of a surprise that Manuel Pellegrini’s side are being linked with a swoop for a player who has been very impressive this term.

What would Maripan bring to West Ham?

West Ham are not exactly short of height in central defence, with last summer’s arrival Issa Diop also standing at 6ft 4in.

There has not really been a lot of consistency in Pellegrini’s back four this term, though, and that will need to change next season if they are to move forward.

Maripan’s height means that he is a force in both penalty boxes, but the 11-time Chile international is a ball-playing centre-back.

Indeed, what the South American lacks in speed, he more than makes up for in other areas of his game, including technical skills.

Roma will seemingly have something to say about Maripan’s future, but West Ham should certainly be looking to explore a possible deal for the colossus who would the perfect addition alongside Diop in the backline next term.

Nacho Novo has opened up about his friend Alfredo Morelos this week in light of his most recent showing against Kilmarnock, which saw him make the headlines in typically controversial fashion.

What’s the word?

The Colombian goal machine simply cannot stay out of the limelight. Whether he is scoring goals, getting into disputes with the opposition or, as is so often the case, a bit of both, Morelos is a man who is never too far away from the headlines.

Kirk Broadfoot, a former Rangers player, managed to provoke the volatile attacker on Saturday, but the incident did not see either player go into the referee’s book.

In an interview with Evening Times, Novo gave his verdict on the confrontation and suggested that Broadfoot’s decision to trod on Morelos’ heel was premeditated.

“That’s been planned. Kirk knows how to wind people up and that’s what it’s all about.

“Players are going to target strong personalities and wait for a reaction. Everybody wants to win a game and if you can get rid of the other team’s top goalscorer it’s a big help.”

Hot-headed reputation will cause problems – time to cash in?

While Novo is not directly suggesting that the Kilmarnock man’s premeditated attempt to rattle Morelos is part of a wider problem, there is no doubt that every defender in the division will be inclined to rile him up.

Does Steven Gerrard want Rangers to be defined by recurring stories over Morelos and his ability to keep a cool head? The damage has already been done to his reputation and defenders will actively look to exploit his weak spot in any way possible, as Novo has alluded to.

Interest from across Europe is likely to emerge in the summer months and Gerrard will be faced with a huge dilemma if and when it comes around, with the Rangers chief likely to be torn over the 22-year-old’s future.

An acute awareness of how his star striker will be targeted by SPFL defenders may well force him to cash in if a substantial offer arrives.

Loads of fans have been running the rule over Kristoffer Ajer’s international performance this week, as the Celtic ace struggled in a draw against Sweden.

International breaks can be fairly tedious and typically provide nowhere near the entertainment on offer from club football, but Norway and Sweden played out an absolute thriller on Tuesday evening.

The Scandinavian rivals drew 3-3 in a Euro 2020 qualifier, and Ajer played 90 minutes in the heart of defence for the Norwegians.

His side went two goals to the good thanks to strikes from Bjorn Johnsen and Josh King, but Viktor Claesson answered before Ajer gave away a clumsy penalty, which made it 2-2.

There were plenty of talking points from the match, but few have drawn more attention than Ajer, who looked lost out there at times.
