Quem é do Sul sabe disso, a pressão é durante 24 horas.

Odegaard 2.0: Arsenal’s teen “diamond” can follow in Saka’s footsteps

Arsenal are hoping to scale the walls erected around the elusive Premier League trophy this season. After narrowly missing out against Manchester City in successive years, Mikel Arteta will hope that third-time lucky is realised in north London.

In both of the previous two campaigns, Arsenal had looked like favourites at one stage but were felled by the ludicrous late-season form that Man City invariably string together each year.

After signing Raheem Sterling, Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino this summer, while only shipping out the fringier players in Arteta's squad, there is hope that this could finally be the year.

There have been some wonderful stories that have hatched during this incremental rise over the past four-and-a-half years, but none more so than that of Bukayo Saka, who might just be the cream of the crop.

What makes Bukayo Saka so special

Hale End's finest. Saka made his professional debut back in November 2018, coming off the bench in the Europa League against Vorskla Poltava to contribute toward a 3-0 victory.

Saka, who has just turned 23, has since enjoyed a meteoric rise to the forefront of the European scene, scoring 59 goals and adding 56 assists across 229 appearances and winning the 2019/20 FA Cup and two Community Shields.

A maverick on the right flank, the England international ranks among the top 14% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 9% for assists, the top 8% for shot-creating actions and the top 13% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.

He's one of a kind… or is he? What if Arsenal had another homegrown talent waiting to burst onto the scene? It's a name that many will already be acquainted with: Ethan Nwaneri is gearing up to become the Gunners' latest prodigy.

The player to follow in Saka's footsteps

Nwaneri is the youngest debutant in Premier League history, first gracing the grass aged only 15 years and 188 days, replacing Fabio Vieira.

The 17-year-old has scored 27 goals and claimed ten assists across 53 matches at youth level, though now he's at the stage when he could take the leap into regular first-team action.

He's been an unused substitute across each of Arsenal's opening Premier League fixtures of the campaign. Last season, he sat on the bench against West Ham United in the top-flight defeat at the Emirates before coming off the bench to make his divisional debut in the reverse fixture, but that was the extent of his action.

Arteta's decision to place him in the matchday squad each week suggests that he's enjoying a speedy rise indeed, and it's conceivable to think that he could earn sporadic minutes throughout the campaign, especially so when considering the congested nature of Arsenal's term.

Make no mistake, he's held in very high regard. Hailed as the "absolute diamond" of Arsenal's youth system by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Nwaneri is starting to take notes from club captain Martin Odegaard as he looks to fashion his way toward the limelight.

Odegaard, Arsenal's midfield general, has been a maestro and monster both in the middle over the past few years, winning the Player of the Season for two years running, and though Arsenal will hope that he remains for many years yet, Nwaneri could be the perfect understudy.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard

Analyst and Arsenal supporter Ben Mattinson has even mused that the teenager's "best position is likely to be as a no. 10/second striker. Similar to where Odegaard played last season [2022/23]".

Odegaard is a box-crashing master and this is something that Nwaneri could utilise for his own skillset. After all, he evidenced as much after scoring three goals across four fixtures at the U17 European Championship.

Arteta will need to manage the precocious talent's workload across the coming year (and beyond) but this is a player whose talent and blooming ability belies his youthful years.

Take, for example, his cameo against West Ham last year, during the emphatic 6-0 drubbing. The data pool is slim but the England U19 international completed 83% of his passes, made a key pass and won two of his three contested duels, as per Sofascore.

Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri

This is the kind of tenacious, rounded and physical approach that has served Saka so well. Oh sure, the £195k-per-week superstar is an exceptional technician with unmatched tactical nous, but he's also an able defender, having moonlit as a left-back in the past.

Moreover, as mentioned earlier, Saka ranks among the top 13% of positional peers for tackles per 90, illuminating the attacking machine's dynamic quality, something that has set him apart from the lion's share of talented hopefuls in the Premier League and spread across Europe.

Mattinson has admitted that Nwaneri could "play in many" different positions as he steps onto the senior scene, but there's little question that his multi-functionality makes a crucial comment on his ability to thrive in the centre of the park.

Offering defensive security that will only solidify further over coming years, Nwaneri is at his core an immense technical talent with an eye for goal and the other for a defence-splitting pass.

He could be the next Odegaard, walking the same trail toward stardom that Saka traversed at the beginning of his glittering career. Arsenal, you better believe it, only continue to rise.

van der Gugten, Seelaar help Netherlands seal one-run win over Ireland

Stirling’s 69 goes in vain on a seesawing day

Ireland needed 12 runs in the final over with two wickets in hand and Simi Singh batting on 44 but Netherlands fast bowler Logan van Beek conceded only ten to give his side a one-run win in their first World Cup Super League match in Utrecht. With three needed off the last ball, No. 10 Josh Little failed to connect an attempted paddle, and the one bye collected meant Ireland finished on the wrong side of the result. The momentum swung both ways through the day. Netherlands were bowled out for 195 to give Ireland the upper hand at the break. Ireland were then reduced to 11 for 3 in their chase after which Paul Stirling and Singh brought the visitors back into the contest. But the run-out of Singh in the final over once again made Netherlands favourites, and van Beek held his nerve to give his team their first points of the World Cup Super League.Although van Beek took two early wickets in the chase by dismissing William Porterfield and Andy Balbirnie, it was left-arm spinner Pieter Seelaar who was Netherlands’ star with the ball with his three-wicket haul. After dismissing Lorcan Tucker lbw in the middle overs, he removed Andy McBrine and Barry McCarthy in the 47th over to give Netherlands the advantage. He conceded just 27 in his nine overs, leaving Ireland eight down after his double-wicket blow. That eventually hurt Ireland further as Singh looked to retain strike in the final over and was run out trying to come back for a second off the first legal ball of the 50th over.Earlier in the day, Timm van der Gugten’s 49 from No. 9 pulled Netherlands out of the hole. He came to bat when his side was 102 for 7 in the 33rd over after Little took a three-wicket haul early on and the hosts’ woes were compounded with two run-outs. However, van der Gugten hit four sixes and one four in his 53-ball innings to take Netherlands past 170. van Beek also contributed 29 from No. 8 to help Netherlands reach close to 200.van der Gugten, who also dismissed Stirling when Ireland looked on course to complete their recovery, was named Player of the Match.

Signed Sinclair instead: Man City wanted star who was later worth £130m

Manchester City were left frustrated in their efforts to break down Inter at The Etihad in the opening game of the Champions League season on Wednesday night.

Pep Guardiola’s side were held to a 0-0 draw by the Serie A champions as they failed to breach Yann Sommer’s goal and did not create a single ‘big chance’ for Erling Haaland to test the Switzerland international.

Savinho and Jack Grealish were selected to start on the flanks and they both ended the game with zero shots on target and zero ‘big chances’ created for the team.

Manchester City's Jack Grealish

The Spanish head coach will surely want more from his wide players for the rest of the season, particularly after Jeremy Doku and Grealish combined for six Premier League goals last season.

Finding high-quality wingers to consistently provide quality in the final third has not always been an easy task for the Cityzens, as illustrated by their addition of Scott Sinclair in the 2012/13 campaign.

How much City paid for Scott Sinclair

Roberto Mancini wanted to add to his options in the wide areas ahead of the 2012/13 season and eventually opted to bring in the English attacker.

It was reported that the Premier League side splashed out a fee of £8m to sign the Team GB winger from fellow top-flight outfit Swansea in the summer of 2012.

The 23-year-old whiz took the number 11 shirt and was looking to step his game up a level after a return of eight goals and four assists in 38 Premier League games for the Swans in the 2011/12 campaign.

Unfortunately, however, Sinclair was unable to break into the City side on a regular basis and did not convince Mancini that he was good enough to start week-in-week-out.

The former Swansea star ended the season with zero goals and zero assists in 15 appearances in all competitions for the club, including 11 outings in the top-flight.

Sinclair then spent the following season on loan at West Bromwich Albion, producing zero goals and one assist in eight Premier League games, before playing four times for Manchester City in the first half of the 2014/15 campaign.

The English winger was sent out on loan to Aston Villa for the second half of that season, racking up three goals in 12 games, before the Villans signed him permanently for a reported fee of £2.5m in the summer of 2015.

This shows that City had a howler with the £8m signing as he did not produce a single goal or assist for the club in the Premier League before moving on for a £5.5m loss three years later.

That particular deal was even more frustrating for the Cityzens when you consider that they had been interested in signing another forward before they signed Sinclair – Lille sensation Eden Hazard.

Manchester City's interest in Eden Hazard

In May of 2012, The BBC reported that Manchester City and Manchester United were both in talks with Lille over a deal to sign the 21-year-old star.

The Belgian wizard had claimed that he would be playing in Manchester in the 2012/13 campaign, before the end of the previous season, and that made it appear as though City and United were the only two clubs in the race for his signature.

Lille were willing to cash in on their star forward, for the right price, but did not want to sanction an exit for the attacker until their final Ligue 1 match, which meant that the Red Devils and the Cityzens had to bide their time and wait to secure a deal.

However, Chelsea then won the Champions League, beating Bayern Munich on penalties in the final, at the end of May and that convinced the Belgium international to sign for the Blues, seemingly turning down Manchester City and Manchester United in the process.

Hazard reportedly completed a £32m move from Lille to Stamford Bridge and revealed that the club’s success in the Champions League made him decide to sign for them, whilst adding that the youthful nature of the squad was appealing to him.

The 21-year-old star ended up being one that got away for City as he went from strength to strength in the Premier League for Chelsea, whilst Scott Sinclair struggled at The Etihad.

Eden Hazard's soaring value

The £32m that the Blues reportedly splashed out on the Lille phenomenon turned out to be a huge bargain because he was a star in England for the following seven years.

Hazard hit the ground running in London with a return of 13 goals and 21 assists in all competitions during his debut campaign with Chelsea, and he followed that up with 17 goals and eight assists in his second season.

The Belgian magician, who was hailed as a “wizard” by the late Ray Wilkins, went on to score 110 goals and assist a further 85 in 352 appearances for the club in all competitions before his exit in 2019.

His best return for goals and assists in a single Premier League campaign had to wait until his final season with the Blues in the 2018/19 term.

As you can see in the table above, Hazard was a regular provider of both goals and assists in the top-flight, with 31 direct goal contributions in 37 appearances.

His incredible form that year convinced Spanish giants Real Madrid to swoop in and sign the Belgian sensation for a reported fee of up to £130m in the summer of 2019.

This meant that Chelsea got seven years of fantastic service, over 100 goals, and a profit of just shy of £100m out of their £32m deal to sign Hazard ahead of Manchester City in 2012.

Malan, Bairstow, Willey hand Sri Lanka a thrashing as England sweep T20I series 3-0

Dushmantha Chameera’s career-best 4 for 17 was the only bright spot for the visitors in the third T20I

England completed a 3-0 clean sweep over Sri Lanka in the T20I series with a crushing 89-run victory at the Ageas Bowl. It was the fourth-largest victory margin in terms of runs England have achieved in the format.Despite the loss of both regular openers to injury, England posted a century stand for the first wicket to grasp a firm hold on the match which they were never to relinquish. Dawid Malan was named Player of the Match for a fluent innings of 76 that belied the slow nature of the pitch. Jonny Bairstow made 51. Nobody in the rest of the match passed 20.England lost their way a little towards the end of their innings. An excellent spell of death bowling from Dushmantha Chameera, a bright spot amid the rubble of a bitterly disappointing Sri Lanka performance, saw England lose five wickets for 19 runs between the 16th and 19th overs. Chameera finished with career-best figures of 4 for 17.Chris Jordan, however, helped England plunder 17 from the final over of the innings to take them to a total that was always likely to prove beyond the reach of a side that had failed to reach 130 in either of the first two games in the series. So it proved as England’s seamers, gaining a degree of lateral movement that is unusual with the white kookaburra ball, combined to bowl Sri Lanka out for just 91. It was the fourth lowest score Sri Lanka have made from a completed T20I innings.Chris Woakes, Sam Curran and Jordan took 4 for 36 from their 12 overs combined, while David Willey picked up three wickets. With Jason Roy suffering from a tight hamstring, Moeen Ali was recalled to the T20I side for the first time since September 2020. But he was consigned to a peripheral role by the dominance of England’s opening batters and the excellence of their seamers.Sri Lanka also made a couple of changes. But Oshada Fernando, who took 27 balls over his 19 runs and seemed preoccupied with trying to hit almost everything through the leg side, underwhelmed and Lakshan Sandakan was unable to make any inroads with his left-arm legspin. Avishka Fernando was absent through injury.Given that England went into this series without two first-choice players (in Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer) and lost Jos Buttler to a calf injury along the way, this result would seem to confirm their place among the favourites for the T20 World Cup in a few months. It is harder to find room for optimism for a Sri Lanka side that succumbed to their first clean-sweep defeat in any limited-overs series (of at least three matches) against England.Top heavy
Malan, who has been batting at No. 3 of late, and Bairstow, who has been at No. 4, put on 105 for the first wicket in 11.4 overs. After taking a couple of overs to size up the bowling and the conditions, they attacked with calm precision to define the rest of the game. Their stand was 14 more than the entire Sri Lanka side managed. It was England’s first century opening stand against Sri Lanka in T20Is and their fifth in total. Underlining that strength in depth is the observation that Alex Hales, another man who is currently deemed surplus to requirements, was involved in three of those five century stands and was busy scoring a century for Nottinghamshire while this game was being played. Realistically, Malan and Bairstow are likely to be shunted back down the order when Buttler and Roy return. Some cheer from Chameera
This has been, in many ways, a chastening series for Sri Lanka. But the performance of Chameera, at least, has been encouraging. With his pace, control and variations, he challenged the batters in each game. Over the series, he had an impressive economy rate of 6.26 per over.Chameera began by conceding just three from the first over of the match, demonstrating an ability to gain a little movement and a sharp short ball. But it was when he returned towards the death that he excelled: mixing his quicker deliveries – he can exceed 140kph – with some well-directed slower balls, he took four wickets for six runs in those two overs and dragged back a runaway England.Malan makes a statement
He batted both beautifully and at an impressive tempo. His first boundary, from his sixth delivery, was a clip for six off his legs that was timed to perfection and it was followed by a succession of reverse-sweeps, drives and slog-sweeps that provided a reminder of his range and class. One lofted drive over extra-cover might have been the stroke of the day. He beat Bairstow to fifty (30 and 41 balls respectively) and demonstrated his ability as a power hitter by heaving Wanindu Hasaranga for two vast sixes in an over.Don’t fret about his having ‘only’ scored 76 by the time he was dismissed in the 19th over: he had been starved of the strike. On another sluggish surface, his strike-rate – 158.33 – was significantly better than anyone else who faced 10 deliveries in the match.Sri Lanka Battered
With scores of 111 for 7, 129 for 7 and now 91 all out, Sri Lanka’s batters have looked strangely impotent. They were never able to register a total that threatened England and only one of them could get up to a score of 40 all series. With time running out ahead of the T20 World Cup, it’s an area that will have to improve if Sri Lanka are to challenge.Woakes’ happy return
It had been almost six years since Woakes had played a T20I before this series. But, in conceding just 3.28 runs per over in the two games he played, he must have earned himself a chance of a longer-term recall. His control, skills, and variations – which seems, on this evidence, to include a new slower ball which is delivered with no change of seam position and appears tough to pick-up – and his ability to contribute with the bat, would appear to render him an attractive option.

Saved by Hall: Howe must immediately drop 6/10 Newcastle star

Newcastle United impressed as they battled to a draw with champions Manchester City in the Premier League, salvaging a point through Anthony Gordon’s second-half penalty.

The visitors will rue the lengthy absence of Rodri, but treating the game as a singular thing, Newcastle were equally disadvantaged as Alexander Isak missed out due to a toe injury.

Anthony Gordon scores for Newcastle

The hosts were well contained in attack but still grabbed that one moment, Bruno Guimaraes threading it through for Gordon, to leave St. James’ Park with a result. Those at the rear deserve plenty of credit, and Lewis Hall was the pick of the bunch.

Lewis Hall's performance in numbers

Hall was a loanee on Tyneside last season but his move has been made permanent for a £28m fee this summer, and he has repaid the financial faith with a role of greater significance.

Having started two of the past three Premier League matches, the versatile left-back is creeping into regular contention, and with further displays like the one against Pep Guardiola’s imperious outfit, he will cement himself as one of Newcastle’s standouts.

Still only 20 years old, the Cobham Academy product impressed against a City right flank consisting of Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva. As per Sofascore, he blocked two shots, timed one perfect interception, won two of his three contested duels and succeeded with his one attempted dribble, but such metrics do not do his fearless performance justice.

Lewis Hall against Erling Haaland

He held Newcastle’s left side almost single-handedly, with Harvey Barnes flattering to deceive.

Harvey Barnes must return to the bench

Barnes has been enjoying his football of late, scoring in three successive Premier League matches before blanking against the champions.

Newcastle World awarded the Englishman a 6/10 match score but wrote that he ‘didn’t pose a serious threat’ against Josko Gvardiol and co, marshalled well.

Indeed, Barnes had plenty of shooting chances but came across somewhat selfish. Failing to make a key pass for his teammates and only taking 23 touches, which was fewer than that of his goalkeeper Nick Pope (33).

He did chalk up a 100% duel success rate, but then Barnes only contested one duel throughout the affair and will now be sweating for his place in the team against Everton at Goodison Park next weekend.

Gordon is one of the first names on the teamsheet, and though Isak has been ruled out of the Magpies’ Carabao Cup tie against AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday, he will be assessed ahead of the weekend.

That means Barnes may well find himself back on the bench. Jacob Murphy isn’t the flashiest footballer in the league but he doesn’t half put in a shift. Against the Citizens, the right winger completed both of his dribbles, made two key passes and won three duels.

Newcastle need that kind of energy, and with that in mind, Barnes should be ditched for the upcoming Premier League clash.
