Big Picture
It’s been a good beginning for the Royal Challengers Bangalore to IPL 2021, winning a hard-fought encounter against defending champions Mumbai Indians on the opening day. They looked like they had the chase well in hand, before letting it slip away and needing AB de Villiers to haul it in for them. In that respect, things haven’t quite changed for the Royal Challengers, and you suspect de Villiers will still be the man they will look to as saviour, especially given the form he showed against one of the IPL’s most formidable bowling sides. The team that vies with Mumbai Indians for the title of the best bowling side are the Sunrisers Hyderabad, but their bowling was a bit off the boil in their opening encounter against the Kolkata Knight Riders, which ended in a 10-run defeat. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, fresh off a star turn in India’s white-ball series against England, was uncharacteristically expensive, going for 45 runs in four overs and only picking up a wicket with the final ball of the innings. The conditions at Chepauk have traditionally favoured spinners. In the first two games at the venue in IPL 2021 though, that’s been uneven. The ball was sticking in the surface for the opening match, but the batsmen seemed to have an easier time of it in the second game. However, what remained consistent was that the top-notch T20 bowlers continued to be tough to face, such as Rashid Khan and Jasprit Bumrah. You suspect that if a bowling group that has reasonable pedigree fires cohesively, the surface could still pose a challenge to the batsmen. In the news
The Royal Challengers are likely to welcome back Devdutt Padikkal in the playing XI. The 20-year-old left-handed opener was among their success stories in IPL 2020, and was in great form in domestic cricket before this edition too. Laid low by Covid-19, he had rejoined the team before the first game but was still advised rest for the first match. Padikkal’s return will mean Washington Sundar no longer has to play the makeshift opener’s role. Who will sit out for Padikkal will be interesting – with the choices appearing to be between Rajat Padiar and Shahbaz Ahmed. Given they are likely to have seven bowling options without Ahmed, he might be the one to sit out.The Sunrisers might also be able to have Kane Williamson available for selection, although fitting him into the XI is another issue. Williamson was pronounced not ‘match fit’ by coach Trevor Bayliss, which was why he missed out in the first game. But with Jonny Bairstow being the Sunrisers’ best batsman in the opening match – coming on the heels of a Man of the Series show against India in the T20I series – it’s unlikely that he will have to make way. Rashid Khan is of course undroppable, and Mohammad Nabi’s bowling might be of vital importance in Chennai. The Sunrisers might also want to consider whether to continue with Wriddhiman Saha as the keeper and opener or bring in a young batsman who can bat in the middle order instead among Priyam Garg, Virat Singh and Abhishek Sharma. After all, in Bairstow, they have someone who can open and keep.Likely XIs
Royal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Virat Kohli (capt), 2 Devdutt Padikkal, 3 Rajat Patidar, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 AB de Villiers (wk), 6 Daniel Christian, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Kyle Jamieson, 9 Harshal Patel, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal.Sunrisers Hyderabad: 1 David Warner (capt), 2 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 Manish Pandey, 4 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 5 Vijay Shankar, 6 Mohammad Nabi, 7 Abdul Samad, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Sandeep Sharma, 11 T NatarajanStrategy punt
Among the Royal Challengers bowlers, the ones David Warner finds toughest to score off are Washington Sundar – and Glenn Maxwell. Against both offspinners, Warner’s run-rate hovers at around seven, but against the other bowlers the Royal Challengers have, Warner is destructive. Sundar already has an acknowledged expertise at bowling in the powerplay, while Maxwell was used upfront too on occasion last year for the Kings XI Punjab. The Royal Challengers may not want to have offspin from both ends to start with, but at least one of the two could be given the new ball to try and rein Warner in.The Sunrisers’ trump card remains Rashid Khan, and they might be best served by using him in the middle, particularly if Maxwell and de Villiers are batting next to each other. Of all bowlers the Sunrisers have, only Rashid has had some measure of control against de Villiers, while he has bossed Maxwell, conceding less than a run a ball against him. He has been terrific against Kohli and Padikkal too, but if the pacers can do the job upfront for the Sunrisers, it leaves Rashid free to control the middle overs.Stats that matter
Virat Kohli is all-time leading run-getter in IPL history, while David Warner sits fourth. However, if you compare only the years in which both played, Warner has an edge on Kohli. In the years both have played the IPL, Warner has 5257 runs at an average of 42.39 and a strike rate of 141.46. Kohli, who has played 166 games to Warner’s 143 in those years, has 5216 runs at 39.21 and a strike rate of 130.82. Since Rashid Khan began playing in the IPL, in 2017, no bowler has a better economy rate than his 6.24 in the competition, even when setting a limit as low as 30 balls bowled. The only one who compares in terms of having an economy of less than seven with more than 50 wickets is, expectedly, Jasprit Bumrah, who has conceded runs at 6.90, and has taken 85 wickets to Rashid’s 77.

Entretanto, a arbitragem assinalou impedimento do atacante do time maranhense.

Like Romero: Spurs target £21m UCL winner who’s a "cheat code"

The Premier League is finally back underway, and while their opening game of the season didn't exactly go according to plan, Tottenham Hotspur have a chance to rectify their mistake in front of their fans tomorrow afternoon when they take on Everton.

However, while fans will be eagerly anticipating the club's first home game of the season, reports suggest that Daniel Levy and Co will be continuing their work in the transfer market, looking for potential last-minute deals to ensure Ange Postecoglou has everything he needs for a successful season in the hot seat.

Interestingly, one of the latest stars touted for a move to N17 has won the Champions League within the last four years and has even been compared to the North Londoners' co-vice captain, Cristian Romero.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Spanish publication Sport, Tottenham Hotspur are one of a few Premier League teams interested in signing Barcelona star Andreas Christensen.

Andreas Christensen

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report has revealed that Manchester United and Newcastle United are keen on the former Chelsea ace. However, as things stand, the Red Devils are the North Londoners' most significant competition for his services.

The story claims that while Barça manager Hansi Flick wants to keep the 28-year-old international in Catalonia this summer, an offer of around €25, which converts to £21m, would tempt the club into selling.

Andreas Christensen, Franck Kessie, and Sergio Busquets of Barcelona.

It might not be the most exciting of transfers, but given Christensen's vast experience, the low price, Spurs' shaky defence and the fact he's been compared to Romero, it's a deal worth pursuing.

Why Christensen would be a great signing for Spurs

Now, before we look at some of the reasons Christensen would be an excellent pickup for Spurs this summer, let's examine this comparison to Romero and where it has come from.

andreas-christensen-premier-league-liverpool-transfers

It mainly stems from FBref, which compared players in similar positions in the 22/23 edition of the Champions League, created a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and concluded that the Argentine was the fifth most similar centre-back to the Dane in the entire competition.

To get a better understanding of how they came to this conclusion, you only need to take a look at the pair's underlying numbers and the metrics in which they ranked closely to one another, such as non-penalty expected goals plus assists, progressive carries, shots, short passing accuracy, expected assists, clearances and interceptions, all per 90.

However, the pair also share a couple of other slightly more superficial similarities as well, such as playing for a major club in London and that they are both over 6 feet, with the Lilywhites ace coming in at 6 foot 1 and the Barça star 6 foot 2.

That said, while the comparisons to the Tottenham titan are undoubtedly positive, they aren't the only reasons Levy and Co should look to bring the former Blues ace to North London in the coming week.

Andreas Christensen

One of the biggest things the 28-year-old "cheat code", as dubbed by journalist Domagoj Kostanjsak, could bring to the club is his vast experience, which could prove to be incredibly useful while the club are trying to build a squad full of young and exciting talents.

For example, the Lillerød-born star has won 74 senior caps for Denmark, made 161 appearances for Chelsea, 82 for Borussia Mönchengladbach and 75 for Barcelona.

Moreover, he has won many trophies in his career, from the Champions League in 2021 to La Liga just two years later.

Ultimately, while he might not be a game-changing signing, Christensen would be an intelligent addition to the squad and one that would help solidify the club's sometimes shaky defence, and for the price reported, it seems like a no-brainer.

Jack Leach discipline, Tom Abell dash keep Somerset in the hunt

Middlesex lose 7 for 30 from position of dominance to leave game finely poised

Matt Roller10-Apr-2021

Tom Abell turns to leg during a vital half-century•Getty Images

A spirited fightback with the ball and the intervention of bad light in mid-afternoon left the opening game of Somerset’s County Championship season finely poised, with Middlesex seven final-day wickets away from victory but wondering how they have managed to let such a strong position slip. The protagonists of the revival were Jack Leach and Josh Davey, who set a dramatic collapse in motion with three wickets each, but Tom Abell could yet propel himself into the lead role if he can build on his overnight score of 62. Middlesex are still favourites, not least with the prospect of another probing new-ball burst from Tim Murtagh and Ethan Bamber in tandem as the climax approaches on Sunday afternoon, but that status is significantly more precarious than it was an hour into the third day.If Somerset manage to pull the chase off, they will have Leach to thank for keeping them in the game. Bowling spin in England in the second week of April is a hazardous occupation, and Leach regularly found himself blowing hot air into his hands to avoid numbness from the chill that swept across St John’s Wood. But by conceding fewer than two runs an over in both innings, he has allowed Somerset to rotate their seamers from the other end and to maintain a sense of control throughout their time in the field.Leach’s method was characteristically unremarkable. He has bowled at a slightly faster pace than usual, with a defensive line and field, and has rarely looked to spin the ball, instead relying on natural variation to induce errors. While Middlesex’s batsmen didn’t look to attack him, match figures of 4 for 61 from 33.4 overs will provide England with some optimism about Leach’s ability to perform the holding role that is so often required in home conditions – and his plucky defensive contribution to a last-wicket stand of 83 with Marchant de Lange on the second afternoon may yet prove vital to the outcome.Middlesex were 113 for 3 and driving towards a substantial lead when Leach came into the attack, but were caught sleeping at the wheel as they gave up their final seven wickets for just 30 runs, all in relatively innocuous fashion. Leach set things in motion, inducing a prod forward from Robbie White which ended up in the hands of first slip, and when Stevie Eskinazi – who had completed a gritty half-century in the gloom – fell to a superb diving catch from Craig Overton at second slip off Davey, the collapse was underway.Related

Derbyshire thrash their way into trouble as Oliver Hannon-Dalby profits

Davey struck twice in four balls, pinning John Simpson and Toby Roland-Jones lbw, while Leach’s disciplined spell was rewarded when he trapped Martin Andersson in front with an arm ball. Lewis Gregory had Tom Helm caught behind, his solitary second-innings wicket following a five-for in the first, and Bamber had ideas above his station when attempting a slog-sweep off Leach only to be pinned leg-before. The meek slide earned Middlesex a ticking-off from their coach Stuart Law, who “told them up there that it wasn’t acceptable” after they “had them by the throat”, but owed as much to the quality of bowling as anything else. That left Somerset needing 285, and when Tom Lammonby poked his first ball from Bamber to slip, it looked an insurmountable task. There are few tougher tests for a top-order batsman than opening the batting against Murtagh at Lord’s under floodlights and full cloud cover, and Abell and Tom Banton both rode their luck early on. They played and missed repeatedly outside the off stump, but they escaped unscathed, and were able to up the tempo against Middlesex’s change bowlers.Banton may reflect that his innings of 37 was a missed opportunity to press on, but in the context of his recent struggles, it was a significant score. His winter was meant to include a breakthrough at the IPL, another eye-catching Big Bash season, and a starring role at the PSL to further his T20 World Cup credentials; in fact, he played twice each for Kolkata Knight Riders and Quetta Gladiators, withdrew from his BBL stint citing bubble fatigue, opted out of the IPL auction and ended his time in Pakistan in self-isolation following a positive Covid test. He was not at his fluent best here, and remains something of an unknown quantity in red-ball cricket, but a couple of crisply-struck boundaries served a reminder of his ability to time the ball.It was Abell whose contribution was most significant. After struggling initially against the new ball, he scored at nearly a run a ball from that point, with a crashed cut off Helm the pick of his shots. Having himself received two chances during his first-innings 165, Sam Robson put down two catches at second slip, but neither would prove costly. Banton and James Hildreth were both aggrieved to have been given out lbw to Roland-Jones, but his two breakthroughs pegged Somerset back just as their target had started to look attainable. And so the final day promises much, with Somerset’s batting depth giving their supporters reason to believe but Middlesex’s knowing their side are seven good balls away from an upset against the bookies’ favourites for Group Two. That the conclusion will unfold against the backdrop of 30,000 empty white seats rather than an eager Sunday crowd does this match a grave injustice.

Archie Gray repeat: Spurs offered chance to sign "fabulous" midfielder

It's finally here; after a summer of non-stop rumours, international football and globe-spanning preseason tours, the transfer deadline is upon us.

While some Premier League teams still have plenty of work to do before the clock strikes 11 tonight, others seemingly have a lot less to do, including Tottenham Hotspur.

The North Londoners have already signed a plethora of talented players over the last couple of months, from Wilson Odobert to Dominic Solanke.

However, while the Lilywhites are unlikely to add any more big-name stars to Ange Postecoglou's squad today, they have been linked with a potential bargain in a signing reminiscent of Archie Gray's last month.

Tottenham's deadline day activity

According to a recent report from GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham are one of several clubs who have been offered Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.

Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report has revealed that Everton and Fulham are just a couple of the clubs who have been made aware of the 28-year-old's availability.

The good news for the North Londoners, who are interested in the player, per the report, is that he's available for a cut-price fee of just £5m due to his contract expiring next summer.

He wouldn't be a game-changing signing for Spurs, but given the price and his experience, bringing him to the club before the window slams shut tonight seems like a great way to improve the squad.

Why Brownhill would be a good signing for Spurs

Okay, so before we look at why Spurs should sign Brownhill, let's examine how his transfer would be reminiscent of Gray's last month.

Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.

Well, to get straight to the point, it would see the club dipping back into the Championship to sign an incredibly important player from a team who was recently in the Premier League and, while the Clarets ace isn't going to be as crucial to Postecoglou's squad in the long term, he could be a useful addition for the here and now.

For example, he made 33 Premier League appearances, mostly in central midfield, for Vincent Kompany's side last season, in which he scored four goals and provided two assists, equating to a goal involvement on average every 5.5 games, which is quite impressive for someone in his position in a team that was relegated.

Moreover, he had the captain's armband for the majority of those games and as Tottenham look to build a young and exciting team over the next few years, having an older head who's happy to play a supporting role and who also has leadership qualities can only be a good thing.

Lastly, across his entire career to date, the "fabulous player", as dubbed by former professional Lee Hendrie, has only missed 15 games through injury, meaning he could be relied upon to remain fit for the games in which he's called upon.

Ultimately, Brownhill is not a player who will change games for Spurs, and his potential transfer to the club would probably not even be picked up upon by fans of other clubs. However, he is a Premier League-proven midfielder with plenty of experience, a clean bill of health and leadership qualities, and he's supposedly available for just £5m.

Therefore, Levy and Co should look to bring him in before the window closes tonight, as he could be a dream squad player for Postecoglou.

Spurs could land Ange's own Gabriel with late bid for £25m star

The experienced veteran would be an incredible addition to the squad.

New Zealand allrounder Kyle Jamieson is wary of expecting too much assistance from the Dukes ball on New Zealand’s tour of England, saying that it could “hurt” their team’s chances if their pacers get carried away by chasing its fabled swing too much.”You don’t want to start trying to move the ball two sets of stumps and then get caught on the bounce,” Jamieson said in a media interaction. “We’ve found favourable conditions in New Zealand at times, albeit not with the Dukes ball, and we are mindful of the fact that if you start searching too much, you can get hurt a little bit.”The New Zealand players who were not at the IPL had trained with the Dukes ball before leaving for England. Jamieson too, it turns out, had Dukes balls in his kit bag at the IPL but eventually didn’t get the chance to train with them.”He [Shane Jurgensen, the New Zealand bowling coach] hid those two Duke balls in my bag but I didn’t get a chance to use them. There’s a lot of talk around how much the Dukes ball can move but it also doesn’t necessarily move all the time and it can take a while for it to start going.”I’m certainly excited by the chance of it moving around little bit. The part of the next few days [will be] to gauge around what the ball feels like and how much it’s going to move. We’ve seen in previous English summers the likes of [Stuart] Broad using the scrambled seam or wobbled seam ball. We’ll try and play around that and gauge the effective way to operate.”Related

Jamieson is up for opening the bowling if given the chance, but acknowledges that there are more established pacers in the line-up. One of those, Trent Boult, could miss the two Tests against England, but New Zealand also have the experienced Tim Southee and Neil Wagner, as well as the likes of Colin de Grandhomme, Matt Henry, Doug Bracewell and Jacob Duffy in the squad.”I’ve done it in domestic cricket, and it’s certainly something that I’d like to do if the chance came up,” Jamieson said. “Obviously you’ve got two of New Zealand’s greats with Tim and Trent there, and rightly so they take the new ball, and I’m the third or fourth in line, but if the opportunity came to take the new ball, I’d certainly try and grab it with both hands.”Jamieson has impressed in Test cricket following his international debut against India early last year. He picked up nine wickets across two games in that series and followed it up with 11 scalps against West Indies in December 2020. He bettered that in the series against Pakistan, where he picked up 16 wickets across two games, including a 11-for in the second Test in Christchurch in January this year. This will be the first time Jamieson will be bowling outside New Zealand in Test cricket, though. Bowling coach Jurgensen believes Jamieson can replicate that form in England.”I have no doubt,” Jurgensen said. “He has a really good opportunity to prepare. Once the guys coming from the IPL are cleared to get out [of quarantine] and start their preparation, hopefully, fingers crossed, they will have a really good run. If we were coming over here for one game, you would probably be a little bit worried about all the guys’ preparation. But we are here, we have got two really important Tests against England and a World Test [Championship] final. So plenty of time for Kyle to specifically prepare for what’s ahead on this tour.”
