Tottenham make move to sign in-demand £25m teenager ahead of Arsenal

With Tottenham Hotspur set to use the summer transfer window to sign the next generation of stars in N17, the Premier League club have made an approach for a sought-after teenage talent.

Levy looks towards the future with new transfers

Whilst the arrival of big-name stars will no doubt dominate the headlines this summer, Spurs deserve plaudits for their clever business during the early passages of the transfer window.

One of the north London outfit's early moves saw them secure the signing of Archie Gray from Leeds United. The 18-year-old arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium off the back of a breakout campaign that saw him pick up the Championship's Young Player of the Season award.

It is likely that Gray could be striking up a midfield partnership with fellow teenager Lucas Bergvall. The 18-year-old was signed from Swedish side Djurgarden back in February and joined Spurs officially at the start of this month.

Spurs' search for young talents has also seen them enter negotiations for Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey. At 23 years of age, the Englishman is slightly older than Levy's previous signings, though Ramsey is still a player with a bright future ahead of him.

With Tottenham's pursuit of high-potential players showing little signs of slowing down, Spurs have now made an approach for a youth international from Serie A.

Spurs set to race for 19-year-old talent

As relayed by Sport Witness, the Italian press are claiming that Spurs are one of the numerous clubs in the picture to sign Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu this summer. The outlet states that the left-back is a target for Ange Postecoglou's side as well as their London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.

The report goes on to claim that Serie A side Napoli were the first team to submit an official bid for Dorgu, though the figure in question fell well short of Lecce's €30million (£25million) estimation of the player.

Patrick Dorgu for Lecce

Spurs are said to have now made an approach for the 19-year-old, but will likely need to match the asking price of Dorgu's current team to get the deal over the line.

Dorgu made 34 appearances in all competitions for Lecce last season, contributing two goals and one assist in the process. The teenager's domestic exploits saw him gain his first call-ups to Denmark's Under-23 side, earning five caps throughout the course of the previous campaign. Senior Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand labelled him as "very, very exciting" last season.

With Ben Davies' contract set to expire in the summer of 2025, it could be wise for Spurs to bring in a new left-back this summer to provide support for Destiny Udogie in the future.

Destiny Udogie

With reports also stating that Lecce are waiting for a bid from Chelsea for Dorgu, Spurs may need to move quickly to secure the Dane's services this summer. With Levy's efforts to sign young talents clear, it could be in Dorgu's best interests to move to N17 before the window closes.

Contact made: Leeds chase £2,000-p/w international who has "got everything"

Leeds United are stepping up their preparation for the new Championship season as they look to secure promotion back to the top flight after playoff heartbreak last season, and have identified a new midfield option for Daniel Farke.

The latest on Gnonto and Summerville

When Leeds failed to secure a return to the top flight in May, there was an expectation that they would lose Championship player of the season Crysencio Summerville and perhaps even Italian winger Wilfried Gnonto.

But midway through the transfer window, both are still at Elland Road, with Gnonto's potential move to Everton seemingly having fallen through and the elite-level interest reportedly shown in Summerville yet to materialise into anything concrete.

“We need to be there with smart decisions and, overall, no anxiety because there are many players who want to play for this Leeds shirt.", Farke explained when quizzed on the pair potentially departing in the coming month.

“If one or two players leave, I am pretty sure we will find some good solutions. I hope, at the moment, our best solutions stay.”

Now, they could have found one solution for Glen Kamara's departure, after the Finnish midfielder joined Rennes.

Leeds register interest in Wales starlet

That is none other than Birmingham City midfielder Jordan James, who has impressed for the Bluebirds in recent seasons. The Wales international is still just 20 years old but has already racked up 11 appearances for the Welsh national side, while he passed 100 Birmingham appearances in the final weeks of the 2023/24 campaign.

In 10 of those international appearances, he was stationed in midfield alongside current Leeds United man Ethan Ampadu, while he has also appeared nine times with Joe Rodon, meaning that were he to make the Elland Road switch he would have little problem settling in. Dan James is another member of Craig Bellamy's Wales squad currently playing football at Elland Road.

Though his side were relegated to League One at the end of last season, James is considered a major future talent and former Wales boss Rob Page didn't hold back in his praise of the youngster.

"He reads the game well, he’s athletic, he likes a tackle, he can pass the ball, he can head it,’ said Page ‘He ticks a lot of boxes; he has got everything. He is a great lad and he wants to work hard. He has got potential and we’re going to help him achieve that."

He has previously been linked to Premier League side Ipswich Town as well as Europa League winners Atalanta, but Leeds will be hoping to steal a march on the pair of them with the offer of more consistent playing time. Previous reports have claimed that any move for James this summer will set the successful club back in excess of £10m.

Football Insider report that Leeds have "registered their interest" in the goalscoring midfielder as they look to replace Glen Kamara in Farke's engine room, and that Birmingham could be "forced" to sell him in order to balance their books after significant spending this summer with James down to the final 12 months of his £2k per week deal at St Andrews, though the club to have the option to extend his contract by a further year.

It remains to be seen whether they firm up that interest, but James would certainly fit the bill for signings at Elland Road this summer, with new faces added with an eye to the future as much as to the present.

Team rumblings are a 'wake-up call' which Justin Langer won't ignore

The defeat to India has brought suggestions that all is not well in the dressing room after a season that has tested everybody

Daniel Brettig01-Feb-2021Justin Langer believes rumblings within the Australian dressing room about its uncompromising environment are a “wake-up call” he cannot ignore, ahead of key meetings among administrators who have the ultimate say about how long he remains as coach of the national team. The CA Board are due to meet on Friday for the first time since the end of the series loss to India, while any concerns from within the team about Langer’s approach as a coach may well be addressed when the new Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) chief executive Todd Greenberg has his first formal sit-down with the governing body’s interim chief executive Nick Hockley later this month.A shocked Langer had fronted some of the concerns in reply to a piece published in the on Friday, seemingly adamant the anxieties raised are without basis. But the fact that a way was found for sensitive internal issues to be raised publicly underlines that numerous players have either not been comfortable enough to front Langer about them directly, fearing selection or other consequences, or do not feel that any feedback already presented thus far has had the desired effect.Speaking to ESPNcricinfo on Monday, Langer acknowledged that any issues could be a matter for discussion between Greenberg and Hockley, and described the episode as a considerable reality check for him between the end of a draining India series and the proposed tour of South Africa.Related

“I’m not going to ignore this, of course, and absolutely it is a wake-up call,” Langer said. “Whenever I finish this coaching career I hope I’m still calling myself a novice coach…I’ll see this criticism as a great gift in a few weeks or months.”My greatest mentors in life are the people who told me the truth and were toughest on me, and I’ve always needed that honest feedback. I might not enjoy it at the time, but it is so, so valuable.”The Test captain Tim Paine stepped forward to defend Langer over the weekend via , where he is contracted as a columnist, but others have been extremely hesitant to stick their heads above the parapet in public.”JL is a passionate guy, particularly when it comes to this team and Australian cricket,” Paine said. “He’s also the guy who kicks the bin over and then puts the rubbish back in. He wears his heart on his sleeve, is tough, fair and at times emotional, just as he was as a player and now as a coach. You would be worried if that wasn’t the case.”Justin Langer has a huge amount on his plate as Australia’s head coach across formats•Getty Images

Langer and his backers argue – with plenty of merit – that his methods, moods and propensity for the occasional outburst at players and staff have not changed over the course of nearly three years in the coaching job. He began amid the depths of the months after the Newlands scandal, through grueling but successful World Cup and Ashes campaigns to this summer’s draining cycle of Covid-19 bubbles and Australia’s third consecutive Test series loss to India. However, the counter view is that Langer should have changed more significantly, evolving his ways and loosening up slightly with a group of players he has now spent a lot of time alongside that is no longer the remorseful and less seasoned bunch he inherited from Darren Lehmann in 2018.The key question is whether Langer’s intensity – a tag that has followed him around across his whole playing and coaching career – can again be tempered as it was somewhat by the presence of Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh at considerable expense on the 2019 England tour.Anxiety about broaching sensitive issues with Langer has been a recurring theme from time to time over that period among players and staff, a dynamic captured quite frankly in the Amazon documentary The Test.Greenberg, as a former chief executive of the NRL and the Canterbury Bulldogs before that, is well acquainted with the difficult conversations around a long-term coach’s future. He was only a matter of months into the Bulldogs job in 2008 when he and the Canterbury board guided the late Steve Folkes to the exit after a period of underperformance at the end of 11 seasons as coach that had also reaped five premierships. There were sound judges of Australian cricket who felt, even as Langer was about to take the job in 2018, that the aftermath of Newlands was the only time when his ways would have suited the national team coaching role, given a set project to improve the team’s reputation and performance over a specific period. At other points, they reasoned, Langer’s methods were better tailored to domestic cricket, as he had demonstrated with the Perth Scorchers in the BBL in particular.Since the Newlands scandal, Justin Langer and Tim Paine have worked well together•Getty Images

Equally, Langer’s tenure has been marked by a gradual build-up of handpicked staff and support around him. The team manager Gavin Dovey stayed on in his role after Lehmann’s departure largely due to his closeness to Langer, while the head of national teams, Ben Oliver, had a long history of working alongside Langer in Western Australia prior to his appointment – alongside high performance chief Drew Ginn – to fill the large managerial hole left by Pat Howard and then temporarily occupied by Belinda Clark.Among team support staff, the likes of David Saker and Graeme Hick departed in 2019 and 2020, replaced by Andrew McDonald as senior assistant, while others such as Troy Cooley and Trent Woodhill have lent their support on a tour-by-tour basis. The former ODI captain George Bailey joined Langer and Trevor Hohns on the selection panel towards the end of the 2019-20 season, a deeply respected figure among Australian playing ranks.Paine and Aaron Finch, the national ODI and T20I captain, have formed effective working relationships with Langer during that time. Paine is set to lead the Test squad on the proposed tour of South Africa later this month, while Finch leads a white-ball squad on a short tour of New Zealand, where that team is to be coached by McDonald. Langer has always been strident in his belief that the national team coach needed to be in overall command given how much the game’s formats overlap.”I don’t see anywhere around the world where it’s worked well to split the roles between formats, and that’s stayed true since the first letter I wrote to David Peever and James Sutherland about the job,” he said. “I love the job, there’s nothing I don’t love about it, including the criticism.”

Martinelli upgrade: £34m Champions League star wants to join Arsenal

While they ultimately ended the campaign empty-handed, it would be fair to say that, on the whole, Arsenal took another step forward last season.

Mikel Arteta's side came within two points of Manchester City in the Premier League and put in a good showing in the Champions League.

However, for all the stars who saw their stock rise at the Emirates, a few players endured a disappointing year.

One of those was Gabriel Martinelli, who struggled to kick on from his impressive showing in 2022/23, and that could cost him a place in the team this season, as based on recent reports, Edu Gaspar and Co could be about to land an incredibly exciting winger who may be the perfect upgrade on the Brazilian.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Arsenal are interested in signing Bayern Munich's Kingsley Coman this summer.

Bayern's Kingsley Coman

Alongside the Gunners, the report claims that Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona are also interested in the Frenchman. However, the good news is that while he'd be happy to move to England or Spain, he is 'particularly keen on a move to the Emirates Stadium.'

The report has revealed that the German Behemoths value the 28-year-old between €30m and €40m, which converts to between £26m and £34m. Interestingly, they would also be willing to let him leave on loan this season.

In all, if Arsenal can secure Coman on loan, then this deal seems like a no-brainer, and even if they have to pay a fee, the reported prices aren't unreasonable, although his potential arrival could be bad news for Martinelli.

How Coman compares to Martinelli

Okay, so the first thing to point out is that while Coman has started plenty of games off the right of a front three in his career – 118 to be precise – he's spent more time playing off the left – 169 starts – so were he to make a move to North London this summer he'd likely do so with the intention of playing on the left.

Moreover, last season, Arteta made it quite clear that he was happy and willing to make changes on the left, whereas it's abundantly clear that Bukayo Saka's place in the starting lineup is practically guaranteed, although you can understand why, given his tally of 34 goal involvements in 47 games last season.

Therefore, one of the Bayern ace's main competitors in this Arsenal side would be Martinelli, but how do the pair stack up to one another?

jamie-bynoe-gittens-gabriel-martinelli-arsenal-opinion

Well, to be honest, when it comes to pure output last season, neither one had a particularly impressive campaign.

For example, the Gunners number 11 racked up 13 goals and assists in 44 appearances, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 3.38 games, while the former Juventus star produced eight in just 27 matches, meaning he maintained a marginally more impressive average of a goal involvement every 3.37 games.

However, when we look at their underlying numbers from last season, the difference is far starker, and unfortunately for the former Ituano gem, it is not in his favour.

For example, in practically every metric, the Paris-born dynamo, whom former Bayen Sporting Director Matthias Sammer once described as "one of the biggest talents in European football," comes out on top, such as non-penalty goals plus assists, progressive carries, passes and passes received, passing accuracy, passes and crosses into the penalty area, key passes and shot and goal-creating actions, all per 90.

Ultimately, while Martinelli is an undeniably talented winger and someone who could rediscover his form this season, the "formidable" Coman, as dubbed by former coach Patrick Gonfalone, massively outperforms him when it comes to the pair's underlying numbers, suggesting that were he to join Arsenal this summer, he'd be a far more useful player to have out on the left.

Therefore, if Edu and Co have the chance to sign him this summer, they should take it, even if they have to pay a fee upfront.

Lockie Ferguson signs Yorkshire deal for 2021 T20 Blast

Yorkshire have announced the signing of Lockie Ferguson, the New Zealand fast bowler, as an overseas player for the T20 Blast.Ferguson’s stock has risen in T20 cricket over the last six months, after he briefly starred for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2020 IPL, taking 3 for 15 and closing out a Super-Over win in his first appearance of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He also impressed in New Zealand’s home series against West Indies, taking combined figures of 7 for 56 across nine overs, before an injury ruled him out of the ongoing series against Australia. There is an element of uncertainty involved in his availability, given New Zealand will be playing Test cricket in the UK – against England and in the World Test Championship final – during the group stages of the T20 Blast. But Ferguson has not featured in the format since his debut against Australia in December 2019, and a Yorkshire press release said he was “expected to be available to play in all of the Vikings’ North Group matches” despite his involvement in the IPL.Yorkshire will be Ferguson’s second county, after he played 13 T20s and five County Championship games for Derbyshire in 2018. He was particularly impressive in the Blast, taking 16 wickets and conceding just 6.64 runs per over.”When Yorkshire comes knocking it’s obviously pretty exciting times as a cricket lover – it’s such a big county,” Ferguson said on Thursday. “[I’m] pumped to go back to the Blast. I have very fond memories and in many ways it kick-started my career a little bit, playing for Derby. I actually probably had one of my better games against Yorkshire so would be nice to play a home game – it was a pretty spicy wicket.”I enjoy playing in the UK. The wickets have been very kind to me. To go and play a T20 comp off the back of the IPL will be great [as will] getting constant cricket in. The experience you get is second to none. Leading into a World Cup year, that seems like so far away but that’s in the back of my mind and I want to make sure I’m firing for that World Cup.”Related

Andrew Gale, Yorkshire’s head coach said: “Lockie has got X-factor pace. Pace in T20 cricket is always a good thing, but also his death bowling in particular will be hugely beneficial.”We haven’t had somebody who is reliable and consistent at the death for a number of years. This is something that we have been working on with the lads in-house, but having someone who you can rely on at the death is a big plus.”We wanted a bowler with some experience because we felt with our young seamers, we want to keep them fit and protect them throughout the season. We had a number of injuries last year to our young seamers, so we want to look after them.”By bringing Lockie in, it means that the burden of workload for them should be a little bit smaller. It fits the bill and we are glad to get him on board. Having somebody available for the whole competition is also a big thing.”Ferguson is the club second confirmed overseas signing for 2021 after Duanne Olivier, the South African fast bowler. Olivier has moved to overseas status for the third year of the contract he signed in 2019, following two years as a Kolpak registration.Ferguson could be one of several New Zealand white-ball internationals to feature in the Blast this season, with Essex understood to be in talks with James Neesham despite the possibility of a slight overlap between the start of the Blast and the end of the IPL, where he is under contract with Mumbai Indians. The Blast is scheduled for a slightly earlier window in the summer to accommodate the inaugural season of the Hundred, and is due to clash with several international series. With the pandemic leading to complications and uncertainty regarding international travel, counties have found it tricky to find overseas players available throughout the competition, but a number of signings are still expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Forget Trippier: Dyche could land late Everton move for £12k-p/w ace

The right-back situation at Everton will be a cause for concern for Sean Dyche, with limited options available to the Toffees boss ahead of this weekend’s trip to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Ben Godfrey featured at full-back towards the end of last season, but after his departure to Atalanta earlier this summer, the club now only have a couple of options in that area of the pitch.

Ashley Young has been the most consistent figure at right-back, making 31 appearances in the Premier League during 2023/24, but made a horror start to the new campaign, picking up a red card in the opening-day defeat against Brighton.

Seamus Coleman is currently the club’s longest-serving player after arriving on Merseyside back in 2009, but the now 35-year-old has struggled with injuries over the last few campaigns, restricting him to just seven league starts last time around.

However, with just a week to go in the transfer window, Dyche may want to invest in a new talent at full-back, with another experienced option linked with a move to Goodison Park in recent days.

Everton's search for a right-back

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Everton have made contact with Newcastle United over a deal to sign 33-year-old right-back Kieran Trippier.

It comes after the England international lost his captaincy role at St James’ Park, with Trippier wanting to leave the club after being an unused substitute in the opening-day victory over Southampton last weekend.

He’s been an excellent option for the Magpies after his move from Atlético Madrid back in January 2022, helping the club reach the Champions League for the first time in over two decades.

However, he suffered an injury towards the back end of last season, looking a shadow of his former self with age starting to catch up with him – even admitting himself to a drop in his own "standards".

Any deal would likely be a loan move for Trippier, but it’s unclear how much of his £120k-per-week salary Dyche’s side would have to contribute to a deal – with the Toffees needing to explore other transfer targets, including one player who’s also previously been touted with a move to Merseyside.

Everton's ideal Trippier alternative

In recent days, Everton have been linked with a move to sign versatile talent Junior Dina Ebimbe from Eintracht Frankfurt before the end of the transfer window.

The Frenchman could be allowed to leave the Bundesliga outfit this summer, despite only joining the club on a permanent basis from PSG last summer.

With Ebimbe only being 23, he would provide a youthful option that is desperately needed in the right-back department, with his figures from last season showing why he would be a better option than Tripper for Dyche’s side.

The “fantastic” Frenchman, as described by scout Antonio Mango, may have registered slightly fewer goal contributions, but excelled with the ball at his feet, averaging more progressive carries and take-ons per 90 than Trippier.

Ebimbe, who only earns a reported £12k-per-week as per Capology, also bettered the Englishman defensively, winning more tackles per 90 alongside aerial duels – showcasing the defensive stability he can provide should he move to Goodison.

On the face of the deal, Trippier would provide experience and quality in the right-back position, but given his age, it would be a huge risk signing another player on the wrong side of 30.

Ebimbe would offer a youthful and versatile option, whilst having the potential to improve further down the line, with his abilities in and out of possession helping the Toffees at both ends of the pitch.

Bargain: Everton in the race for £8.5m starlet who can be Richarlison 2.0

The Toffees could still land more attacking reinforcements.
