Cristiano Ronaldo punishes Al-Fayha! CR7 pounces on terrible error to send Al-Nassr cruising into AFC Champions League quarter-finals

Cristiano Ronaldo scored late to fire Al-Nassr to a comfortable 2-0 win over Al-Fayha and seal a quarter-final berth in the AFC Champions League.

It was one-way traffic right from the start at Al-Awwal Stadium as Al-Nassr dominated possession, with Marcelo Brozovic pulling the strings from a deep-lying position in midfield. And they did not have to wait for long to break the deadlock as Otavio headed home an inch-perfect cross from Al-Khaibari in the 17th minute.

Although Ronaldo took his time to make his presence felt, once he warmed up he was right in the thick of things in attack. He was clamouring for a penalty after he was brought down inside the box by two Al-Fayha players, before being denied by the woodwork having risen highest in the penalty area.

Al-Nassr pushed on in search of their second of the night following the break and Ronaldo did find the net, but he was flagged offside after he mistimed his run by a fraction of a second.

However, with just four minutes from regulation time, the prolific forward put the tie to bed by finally getting his name on the scoresheet. A half-baked clearance from goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic ricocheted and fell kindly for Ronaldo, who simply rolled the ball into a gaping goal to seal a 3-0 victory over the two legs for the Knights of Najd against their domestic rivals.

A late goal was the icing on the cake for Ronaldo, who came agonisingly close on a couple of occasions on the night. After emerging as the difference-maker in the first leg with an 81st-minute winner, the 39-year-old once again proved to be a handful for Al-Fayha defenders throughout the 90 minutes. Despite being denied by the frame of the goal and the offside flag, he kept asking questions and was finally rewarded for his perseverance late into the night.

Getty ImagesTHE BIG LOSER

Al-Fayha goalkeeper Stojkovic must shoulder his fair share of blame after his team were knocked out of the continental competition. He could have done better with his legs to save Otavio's header and was again indecisive with the clearance that led to Al-Nassr's second of the night. A performance to forget for the Serbian shot-stopper.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Al-Nassr will now shift focus on their domestic commitments as they are set to host Al-Shabab next in the Saudi Pro League on Sunday. They are chasing leaders Al-Hilal, who are seven points ahead of them in the title race and can hardly afford to slip up.

‘The honour of a lifetime’ – Wrexham owner Ryan Reynolds receives Order of British Columbia award 2023 for his ‘service to communities’

Reynolds earns Order of BCAward given those who have gone "above and beyond"Actor owns Wrexham and boasts lengthy Hollywood careerWHAT HAPPENED?

The Wrexham owner was born and raised in Vancouver and is one of 14 inductees to the Order of BC. The award is given to "people who have gone above and beyond without expectation of reward in service to their communities". One can reasonably expect that Reynolds' ownership of Wrexham, as well as his work in Hollywood, has played a key role in him earning the award.

AdvertisementWHAT REYNOLDS SAID

Reynolds took to Instagram to express his delight at earning the award. He wrote: "Receiving the Order of British Columbia is the honour of a lifetime. I could have been born anywhere but I had the dumb and incredible luck to be made in Vancouver… Thank you, @lgjanetaustin and @davidebybc and everybody on the OBC selection committee. Also, huge thanks to my three older brothers, Patrick, Terry and Jeff as well as my mom, Tammy… we’re always there for each other. No matter what. Love you.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Reynolds was given the award at a private ceremony due to scheduling conflicts. The government biography of the Wrexham owner claims he is a "homegrown heavyweight" and say that his kindness and selflessness have benefitted those both in British Columbia and beyond.

Premadasa stadium set for massive upgrade

Sri Lanka Cricket is in the early stages of planning a upgrade to training facilities at the Premadasa Stadium, with indoor nets, a swimming pool and a dormitory for the cricket academy all being considered

Andrew Fidel Fernando07-Sep-2014Sri Lanka Cricket is in the early stages of planning a substantial upgrade to the training facilities at the Premadasa Stadium, with indoor nets, a swimming pool and a dormitory for the cricket academy all being considered, CEO Ashley de Silva has said. The project is presently in the design stage, and is expected to cost around 100 million rupees (approx. USD $770,000).”We hope to embark on preliminary work before the end of this year” de Silva told . “Hopefully we can put the plan together so that it will be ratified either in the next executive committee meeting or the one after that.”Players and coaches have felt that a swimming pool has been overdue for some time at the Premadasa Stadium, which is the primary site for the national team training ahead of any tour. At present, the team largely carries out its nets and gym sessions at the Premadasa stadium, and those who require swimming-pool training do so a few kilometres away at either Nondescripts Cricket Club or Sinhalese Cricket Club. On wet days, both the Sri Lanka team and touring sides normally head to the indoor nets at NCC.The Premadasa stadium is also the epicentre for SLC’s Max Cricket Academy, and a dormitory which will house around 30 players is part of the proposed upgrade. On-site living quarters are largely expected to benefit cricketers from outside Colombo, who have become increasingly central to the nation’s top teams. A dormitory will allow those players to attend training from a convenient location, and prevent the need for frequent trips to their home towns.SLC does not yet have a concrete timeline for the project, with the executive committee expected to decide the exact nature of the upgrade.

Sangakkara 11th double flattens NZ

Kumar Sangakkara smashed his 11th double-century, one short of Don Bradman’s record 12, to transform the 143-run deficit at the start of the day into a game-changing 135-run lead

The Report by Devashish Fuloria04-Jan-20152:49

Arnold: Sangakkara always looking for ways to improve

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe closest New Zealand came to taking a huge first-innings lead – or, as it panned out, not conceding a huge one – in Wellington was off the first delivery of Trent Boult’s first over of the day, when the ball swung sharply past the outside edge as Kumar Sangakkara went for a drive. Twice, in Christchurch, Sangakkara had fallen for single-digit scores edging similar deliveries from Boult. The cover drive may be Sangakkara’s signature shot, but that early wake-up call was a sign he had to lock the shot in a safe, at least till Sri Lanka were out of danger.By the time the shot started making regular appearances, Sangakkara had cruised past yet another century – his 38th in Tests and his third in New Zealand – and lifted Sri Lanka to a position of strength. The last time he scored off cover drive in the innings, it took him to his 11th double-century, one short of Don Bradman’s record 12, and the 143-run deficit at the start of the day had been transformed into a game-changing 135-run lead. The New Zealand openers survived 11 overs before the close of play, reducing the deficit by 22 runs.Sangakkara’s was an innings of two halves. Gritty first, one in which Sangakkara was prepared to give the bowlers, and the conditions, due respect and bide his time, like the young Vito Corleone. Then, the matinee-show entertainment, as the second new ball was taken apart by an authoritative, Brando’s Vito-like ruthlessness. While the first 100 had taken 191 deliveries with seven fours, the second came off only 110 balls, with 11 fours and three sixes, lifting Sangakkara’s Test average briefly over 59, before dropping to 58.92 on his departure.Sangakkara had needed support in the first half, and that came through his fighting 130-run stand for the sixth wicket with Dinesh Chandimal. The partnership was critical. Sangakkara and Chandimal knew they had to survive an opening burst from Tim Southee and Boult to get any closer to New Zealand’s total. Sangakkara appeared in discomfort against Boult’s swing, playing out 29 balls to score eight runs in the bowler’s testing opening spell of six overs. During that period, he curbed his scoring instinct and focused on defending from the back foot. It was the kind of restraint and discipline Sri Lanka needed too. It also meant that Chandimal only faced seven deliveries in that spell from Boult, who had looked the most threatening of the pace trio. Only 20 runs came in the first eight overs of the morning.Chandimal showed more intent, both in his shot-making and his running between the wickets, to ensure Sri Lanka kept trudging ahead while Sangakkara held one end. He clipped Southee a couple of times to the square-leg boundary early in his innings. Chandimal had his fair share of plays and misses to deliveries wide outside off, but with time, his defence grew tighter. He reached his sixth half-century soon after lunch, and went on to complete 1000 runs in Tests with a paddle sweep for four. For New Zealand, the first objective for the second day was straightforward – break the stand between Sangakkara and Chandimal, and expose the tail to the seamers – but, as they found out, not simple. Sangakkara’s pedigree aside, even Chandimal has in the past shown a stomach for fight in overseas Tests. Still, New Zealand’s seamers and even the spinner generated enough from the pitch to keep the batsmen alert, but by the time James Neesham broke the stand – in the 70th over – Sri Lanka were only 13 behind. If New Zealand thought they could quickly clean up the tail, they were in for a rude shock. Sangakkara had just moved to 93 with his signature shot. The previous two times he had crossed 50 in New Zealand, he had gone on to score unbeaten centuries. He ensured he was not going to miss out on this start. Enter phase two.The new ball was due in 10 overs, so Sangakkara increased the pace of scoring, picking up two boundaries off Neesham in the 76th over, then charged down the pitch against Doug Bracewell, lifting him over mid-on. The lead was 37 when the new ball was taken, but by then Sangakkara was already in an unrelenting mood. He had given Boult his time under the sun, now it was his turn. Boult was greeted with a flashing cover drive, then sliced through point in the same over. He was driven for two more boundaries through cover, over the infield, before he was taken off. The scores, if anyone was keeping them, had been well and truly settled.Dhammika Prasad, Rangana Herath and Suranga Lakmal played their parts in rapid stands worth 34, 47 and 67, allowing Sangakkara to complete his masterclass.

Barkley signed by Ratcliffe at NiceIn fine form for relegation-threatened LutonUnited need midfield reinforcementsWHAT HAPPENED?

Barkley has been linked with a shock move to United by The Sun, having previously impressed new owner Ratcliffe during his time at Nice. When he was with the French club, reports suggested that Ratcliffe actually pushed manager Lucien Favre to play him more often for the Ligue 1 club.

The report suggests that United are looking to reinforce their midfield as they are willing to sell Casemiro and send Sofyan Amrabat back to Fiorentina. Barkley would not be a prohibitively expensive target, as Luton may well need to sell if they are relegated.

Barkley has made 20 appearances in the Premier League this season, scoring three goals and registering three assists. He is spearheading Luton's attempt to avoid relegation, with the club currently 18th, one point behind Everton, although another points deduction would dramatically alter the complexion of the survival race.

Lionel Messi vs Diego Maradona: Juan Roman Riquelme responds to GOAT question as ex-Argentina star admits he was 'lucky' to play with both footballing icons

Boca legend started out alongside 1986 World Cup winnerAlso played with eight-time Ballon d'Or winnerFinds it impossible to pick between two icons of the game

WHAT HAPPENED?

The former Argentina international stepped out of the famous youth system at Boca Juniors while 1986 World Cup winner Maradona was still on the club’s books. He would then go on to represent his country alongside eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi when a precocious young talent burst onto the senior scene.

While forming part of an exclusive club of players that have been team-mates of both Maradona and Messi, Riquelme is reluctant to pick between the pair when it comes to the greatest of all-time title. He has told when presented with that poser: “Maradona? He’s the greatest I saw on a football pitch when I was a child. Now when I grew up, the greatest is Messi. I was lucky to play with both of them, for me it was a very big dream.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Maradona inspired his country to global glory on Mexican soil, delivering the famous ‘Hand of God’ goal and a remarkable individual strike against England along the way. Messi emulated the efforts of his illustrious countryman when inspiring the Albiceleste to a World Cup crown at Qatar 2022.

Messi is still going strong at international level, while starring for MLS side Inter Miami domestically, with the iconic 36-year-old rewriting the history books with 180 caps and 106 goals to his name. He will form part of a Copa America title defence in 2024, but it is yet to be determined whether he will grace the 2026 World Cup finals that will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Bonmati was the runaway winner of this year's award after leading Barcelona to a famous treble as well as helping Spain overcome significant off-field strife and lift the World Cup. She received the trophy at a glitzy ceremony in Paris on Monday night.

Bonmati enjoyed her best-ever season for Barca, registering 15 goals and 18 assists as the Blaugrana won Liga F, the Champions League and the Spanish Super Cup. She also starred for Spain Down Under, playing a key role in La Roja's World Cup victory and being named player of the tournament.

GettyDID YOU KNOW?

After winning the 2021 and 2022 awards, Alexia Putellas has relinquished her crown as the best women's player in the world. An ACL injury suffered on the eve of Euro 2022 significantly limited her involvement throughout the season, with the midfielder only returning to play a bit-part role in the World Cup.

Bonmati is well placed to defend her Ballon d'Or in 2024. Pochettino’s caution should see Leeds keep hold of Clarke this month

January has been a worrying month for Leeds United supporters mostly for reasons off the pitch.

The whole spygate saga has had some feeling uneasy as they wait to see if the club are punished in any way, while Jack Clarke has constantly been linked with a move away from Elland Road this month.

According to Sky Sports, Southampton, among other teams in the Premier League, are keen on signing the 18-year-old winger in this transfer window. However, with deadline day fast approaching and a big player having seemingly cooled their interest, things are now looking good for Leeds.

The Breakdown

The Evening Standard reports Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is not fully convinced with Clarke, which will come as a huge relief to Leeds.

The Yorkshire club will undoubtedly fancy their chances of fighting off a side like Southampton but, with Tottenham, it becomes a different ball game.

Given how well the developments of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Harry Winks among others have gone, joining the north London club, who now find themselves among the Premier League elite, will sound like an attractive proposition to another young, talented English footballer such as Clarke.

With a transfer to Tottenham now seemingly unlikely, though, Leeds supporters should be able to rest easy, or at least until the summer.

Whatever the case, Clarke looks set to remain at Elland Road for the time being and, at 18, there is no need for him to rush and force a move, especially when you are already getting a good football education from an astute coach like Marcelo Bielsa.

Nisarg Patel, Jasdeep Singh get USA call-ups

Nisarg Patel, who finished as Most Valuable Player in the recent USACA T20 National Championship, and 22-year-old fast bowler Jasdeep Singh have been picked in USA’s 14-man squad for next month’s ICC Americas Division One T20 tournament in Indianapolis

Peter Della Penna08-Apr-2015Nisarg Patel, who finished as Most Valuable Player in the 2014 USACA T20 National Championship, and 22-year-old fast bowler Jasdeep Singh are in line to make their senior team debuts for USA after being named in the 14-man squad for next month’s ICC Americas Division One T20 tournament in Indianapolis.Long-time veterans Usman Shuja and Steve Massiah have been passed over for selection, and USACA is yet to name a captain for the newly-assembled squad. After leading the run charts at last year’s USACA T20 National Championship, Patel finished second in this year’s event behind Steven Taylor. Jasdeep, born in New York City and currently residing in New Jersey, was the leading fast bowler at last week’s tournament and finished with 10 wickets in six games according to unofficial stats.”I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for a long time,” Jasdeep told ESPNcricinfo on Wednesday. “I’ve been working hard and now that I’ve gotten the opportunity I’m going to work even harder to make it count so I can have a long career and play for USACA for a long time as an attack bowler.”Patel and Jasdeep were two of seven changes made following USA’s fifth place finish at last year’s WCL Division Three in Malaysia. Their performance in that tournament saw them being demoted to Division Four after they only managed a pair of wins against regional rivals Bermuda, and batsmen Sushil Nadkarni and Aditya Thyagarajan announced their retirements upon returning from Division Four. The others to be dropped were fast bowlers Elmore Hutchinson and Jermaine Lawson and allrounder Srini Santhanam. With the exception of Santhanam, the other players who were dropped were absent from last weekend’s T20 National Championship. The five players recalled to the squad are allrounders Japen Patel and Barrington Bartley, wicketkeeper Akeem Dodson, batsman Nicholas Standford and fast bowler Hammad Shahid. The 23-year-old Shahid is one of four American-born players in the squad, along with Jasdeep, Dodson and Taylor – the first time the squad has so many American-born players since Taylor, Dodson, Mital Patel and Ravi Timbawala toured Canada together for the 2013 Auty Cup.Despite being the leading wicket-taker in last week’s national tournament, offspinner Pranay Suri was unable to break into the USA squad and instead was named as one of four reserve players. Suri took 12 wickets in five games, including two four-wicket hauls, at an average of 9.83 and an economy rate of 6.38.Incumbent offspinner Muhammad Ghous earned a reprieve despite poor returns in recent ICC tournaments. Ghous took four wickets in six games at an average of 41.50 in Malaysia at Division Three and had also struggled at the 2013 World T20 Qualifier in the UAE where he could only manage two wickets in six games at an average of 75.50 and an economy rate of 8.38. Ghous claimed just four wickets in four games at the USACA T20 but had a solid economy rate of 4.27.Suri’s North West Region team was the only one of the four semifinal teams at the USACA T20 that is not represented in USA’s 14-man squad. National runner-up USA Development XI and New York each had four players selected while Taylor and Japen Patel were selected from the championship-winning South East squad.Bartley and Timil Patel are the only two players over the age of 30 in the squad and five players are under 25, making this one of the youngest USA senior team squads to participate in an ICC tournament.USA will compete against Canada, Bermuda and Suriname in the ICC Americas Division One T20 event. The tournament will have a double round-robin format and takes place between May 3 and 10 with the top two sides advancing to the global qualifier in Ireland and Scotland, beginning July 6. The Americas qualifier will be the first time the new cricket complex at World Sports Park in Indianapolis will host a major national or international tournament.USA squad: Danial Ahmed, Fahad Babar, Barrington Bartley, Adil Bhatti, Akeem Dodson (wk), Karan Ganesh, Muhammad Ghous, Japen Patel, Nisarg Patel, Timil Patel, Jasdeep Singh, Hammad Shahid, Nicholas Standford, Steven Taylor (wk)
