Newcastle interested in Kalvin Phillips

An exciting claim has been made regarding Newcastle United and Kalvin Phillips…

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Dean Jones has revealed that the club are looking at a move for the England international ahead of the summer window.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “They’re very aware of the fact that the players have to fit into that team. Something somebody said to me earlier on was that they are interested in Kalvin Phillips.

“Can you imagine Kalvin Phillips also now going into that Newcastle midfield and taking them to another level?”

Eddie Howe is surely buzzing

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe will be buzzing with this claim, because the prospect of the holding midfielder playing for the club is an exciting one.

The 44-year-old will be delighted with PIF’s interest in Phillips’ services and will be hoping that they can get a deal over the line for him in the coming months, as he would be a superb addition to the Magpies’ team.

The 26-year-old has proven himself at Premier League level with Leeds over the past 18 months. This season, he has made 3.8 tackles and interceptions per game across 16 league appearances, after managing 4.2 per match across 29 top-flight outings last term.

Phillips has shown that he can be a destroyer in the middle of the park by constantly breaking up opposition attacks to win the ball back for his team.

He has also caught the eye at international level, with England boss Gareth Southgate saying: “He’s been excellent. The way he has taken to international football, it hasn’t surprised us because what we’d seen with Leeds, even in the Championship, we felt could convert into our team.

“We felt he could play an important role with us. To play in the enormity of the matches he did in the summer and play as well as he did is massive credit to him.”

This shows that Phillips can handle the pressure of playing on the biggest stage whilst also readily adapting to playing different styles of football under Marcelo Bielsa, Gareth Southgate and now Jesse Marsch, which suggests that he will be able to cope with a switch to St James’ Park.

Imagine the 26-year-old throwing himself into challenges and being the defensive lynchpin of Newcastle’s midfield next season. It is an exciting prospect for the Toon Army, and that is why Howe will be buzzing with the club’s pursuit of the Yorkshire-born colossus.

Michael Clarke weighs up IPL stint

Michael Clarke’s desire to improve his Twenty20 skills has got him thinking about taking part in the IPL for the first time

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Oct-2010Michael Clarke’s desire to improve his Twenty20 skills has got him thinking about taking part in the IPL for the first time – but only if his body is right. Clarke, Australia’s captain in the shortest format, did not play in the opening three versions to spend extra time at home in Sydney. Each year he weighs up a decision between making more money or having a holiday, and he hasn’t always enjoyed a smooth relationship with Lalit Modi, the former commissioner. Modi is no longer involved in the tournament and Clarke is keeping an open mind about taking part.”It’s important for me to play as much Twenty20 cricket as I can but I’ve also got to sum up my body and my life when it comes to choosing between having that six weeks at home for a break or going to play IPL,” Clarke said in the Sunday Telegraph. “If my body feels great and I’m confident I can go out and play those six weeks of the IPL, I’ll put myself in the auction.”But I’ve also got Test cricket and one-day cricket for Australia to think about, our schedule is very busy. If I felt like my body couldn’t handle another six weeks of IPL, I wouldn’t play it. It would make sense that the closer we get to the next Twenty20 World Cup, the more I’ll want to play.”Clarke said the IPL had helped develop players, and not just in the T20 arena. “I would love, no doubt, to take part in the IPL,” he said. “It’s just a matter of when I might be able to play it.”In Matthew Hayden’s autobiography he wrote about how the Australian players realised they weren’t running the show and quickly learned that Modi was dismissive of excessive demands. “Michael Clarke found that out in a hurry,” Hayden wrote. “I remember him saying to Modi, ‘I’m worth X amount of dollars.’ Modi laughed at him.”

Celtic: Ange must unleash Jullien vs Alloa

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side face a break from their Premiership campaign on Saturday afternoon, when the Bhoys make the trip to Alloa Athletic in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.

And, with the Hoops’ opponents currently struggling towards the bottom of the Scottish League One table, the fixture presents the 56-year-old Celtic manager with a perfect opportunity to rest a number of his regular starters, as well as handing minutes to some of his peripheral squad members – in addition to those returning from injury.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/?post_type=web-story&p=664142″ title=”Check out the latest Celtic news!”]

One player who falls into the latter category is none other than Christopher Jullien, the 28-year-old centre-back who last featured for the Bhoys all the way back in December 2020, with a recurring knee injury seeing the former France U21 international miss over a year of first-team football.

However, following the defender’s recent post on Twitter – in which Jullien shared a photo of himself in training at Lennoxtown alongside the caption “green light” – it would appear as if the Frenchman is now ready to make his long-awaited return to the pitch.

And, with the fixture against Alloa not likely to be the most strenuous game of the season for the Celtic backline, Barry Ferguson’s side could well be the perfect opponent for Jullien to ease himself back into the rigours of first-team football.

Game-changer

While the expression like a new signing is perhaps overused when describing a player returning from injury, should Jullien be able to refind the level of form he was in prior to his injury, the 28-year-old’s availability will undoubtedly be game-changing for Celtic’s title hopes this season.

Indeed, over his nine Premiership fixtures in the Bhoys’ 2020/21 campaign, the £4.95m-rated centre-back helped his side to keep five clean sheets, scored one goal and registered one assist, as well as making an average of 1.2 interceptions, 1.2 tackles, 3.6 clearances and winning 6.9 duels per game.

These returns saw the £20k-per-week defender average a rather astonishing SofaScore match rating of 7.43, ranking him as the Hoops’ second-best performer in the league last season.

As such, in order to help get the Frenchman back up to speed as quickly as possible, Postecoglou simply must unleash Jullien on Saturday afternoon, as the return of the player who Noel Whelan dubbed a “leader” could well turn the tide in Celtic’s favour regarding the Premiership race over the coming months.

Newcastle United still in talks for Hugo Ekitike

Newcastle United have been handed an encouraging transfer update in their quest to sign Reims starlet Hugo Ekitike…

What’s the story?

Speaking live on Sky Sports, Dharmesh Sheth revealed: “Talks are still ongoing between the two clubs, and there’s a will to get this deal done. I’m told today of some of the details of the proposed deal. It’s worth around €30m (£25m) – that’s €27m up front with additional add-ons making it around €30m.

“It will be spread over the proposed five-year contract. As it stands, there’s still a small gap over the valuation that Newcastle want to pay and what Reims want. Significantly, the player does want to come to Newcastle. He’s keen to make that move. I’m told that if he was to sign, such is his ability and how highly-rated he is, he would go into the squad for this season.”

Howe needs him

While saying Eddie Howe ‘needs’ a largely unproved 19-year-old from Ligue 1 might sound far-fetched, Ekitike could well be the kind of player who provides Newcastle’s attack with a sense of unpredictability heading into the second-half of the Premier League season.

In fact, writing on Twitter, journalist Graeme Bailey dubbed him an “outstanding talent”, and added that he would be a “huge signing for Newcastle if they get it done, many in France believe he could be the next Mbappe.”

Ekitike has scored an impressive eight goals in just 17 Ligue 1 games, while he’s also managed three assists too, showcasing a real ability to be a genuine finisher in and around the box and also be a intricate link-up player too.

While the likes of Chris Wood and Callum Wilson are tried and tested Premier League options who opposition defences will know all about, the X-factor that Ekitike could bring with him could add another exciting string to Newcastle’s attacking bow.

Whether it’s coming off the bench to provide a bit of spark, or catching other teams out by starting him from the off, the talented teenager is something Howe could really do with as he looks to rescue his side from relegation.

Meanwhile, Newcastle could save their season with this signing…

Liberated England turn the tables

Andrew Strauss was full of praise for his side as their winning momentum continue by taking a 2-0 lead against Australia

Andrew Miller in Cardiff24-Jun-2010When, in the aftermath of another one-sided contest, it was put to Ricky Ponting that England are now one victory away from being able to claim bragging rights in all three forms of international cricket, he bridled with the sort of indignity which suggested that the question was not as preposterous as it might have sounded six months ago. Much like the purported “rivalry” between England and Germany in football, the stats may not stack up when viewed in the fullness of time, but that has never prevented the here and now from assuming the most relevance. And right here, right now, England are hurtling towards the sort of ascendancy that looked inconceivable while Australia cruising to their 6-1 ODI triumph nine months ago. “We’ve only got ourselves to blame for the hole we’re in at the moment,” said Ponting after the match, but he was being disingenuous. With their liberated array of strokemaking batsmen, allied to a canny bowling attack with a priceless ability to think on the hoof, England have got the measure of the Aussies in this series, and it will take an incredible (and dare one say it, inconceivable?) collapse of resolve for a 2-0 deficit to be overturned in the remaining three fixtures.”Australia have had a very good 12 months or so, and they played well against us last summer, but ultimately that was last summer,” said England’s captain, Andrew Strauss. “Times have moved on, and I’m happy with where we are as a side at the moment. Ultimately, this series will be decided in five games not two, but that 6-1 defeat is still fresh in our minds, so we want revenge for that if we can.”There are a myriad of mitigating circumstances that will prevent England from claiming full satisfaction in the event of a series victory – not least the fact that Australia’s attack is down to the barest of bones, with Ryan Harris, their quickest bowler at the Rose Bowl, joining an injury list that already includes the likes of Mitchell Johnson, Ben Hilfenhaus, Peter Siddle and Brett Lee. But, whereas the first match was all about the batting exploits of Eoin Morgan, the Cardiff fixture showcased the second crucial string to England’s bow. Namely they are developing an extremely intelligent attack.Admittedly, it didn’t look too clever when James Anderson was clattered for 13 runs in the opening over of the match, and at 34 for 0 after five, Australia had a platform from which they might realistically have expected to set a minimum target of 280. But then up stepped Stuart Broad, celebrating his 24th birthday, and brimming with enthusiasm after his enforced absence from the Bangladesh series. In tandem with Luke Wright, another man whose confidence and tactical awareness has surged through his involvement in the Twenty20 set-up, he set about stifling the momentum of Australia’s top-order.”The most pleasing thing was the way we adapted as a bowling unit,” said Broad. “I think the first couple of overs didn’t go to plan, but we communicated about the best ways to go, and we tried to bowl as straight as possible because players thrive on a bit of width these days. We used cross seamers pretty much straightaway today, because there was no swing, and that aided us with a bit of extra bounce and a bit more skiddiness.”The communication side of things is massive in Twenty20s,” Broad added. “It’s such a short form of the game, you have to be speaking virtually every ball because one ball can win or lose you the game. That was all that was in our minds, as long as we didn’t give any width, and that helped us claw it back to a decent score after 20 overs.”Ponting, for his part, conceded that England’s tactics had been pretty smart. “They probably bowled 80 or 90% of their balls across the seam, and got the ball to leap from those deliveries,” he said. “I think they just adapted really well. It’s a good skill to be able to do that, and they put us under pressure. From 4 for 90, it’s hard to fight back into the game.”The ability to think on one’s feet is one thing – and Broad himself has long been credited, not least by his first Test captain, Michael Vaughan, as an intelligent cricketer. Having the confidence to put such plans into action, however, requires an extra veneer that is rapidly becoming the hallmark of this England outfit. And Strauss, whose own freeflowing half-century was a vital factor in the final result, credited the lesson he and his team had been handed by the Australians last September for transforming their outlook on one-day cricket.”When we got beaten by Australia last summer, that was an eye-opener,” he said. “We’d been playing okay up until then but it made us realise that what we were doing was not good enough and we had to find a way of being better. We came out to the Champions Trophy [in South Africa] and tried to play a more fearless type of cricket, but as well as being fearless and aggressive, it is very, very important that we are calculated as well. In the field we’ve been far better, the communication is better and the gameplan is clearer. We’ve stifled Australia with the ball and that’s been as important as anything.”It’s always important to learn from your mistakes,” he added. “You learn more about a side when you’re losing than when you’re winning, so in that respect [last year’s beating] was a good thing. For those of us who went through it, it was pretty horrendous, but what’s been good is that everyone realised we had to do things differently, and a lot of people have been putting in suggestions about where we can take things from here on in. It’s very encouraging, and we all feel like we are part of something that can grow, and grow, and grow.”

Warner and Carters take Australia to Sixes title

David Warner and Ryan Carters managed to belt 48 runs from the last over of the final to give Australia their first Hong Kong Sixes trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Nov-2010David Warner and Ryan Carters managed to belt 48 runs from the last over of the final to give Australia their first Hong Kong Sixes trophy on Sunday. Pakistan were on track to defend their total of 6 for 132 in five overs and needed to limit Australia to 46 from the last eight balls delivered by Imran Nazir.Warner (35 off 11 balls) and Carters (31 off eight) stormed the team to a two-wicket victory. “It was amazing,” Warner said. “We have that Australian passion when things are against us.”It is one of those things – we needed 46 in that last over, but it is cricket and we knew we were always a chance if we backed ourselves. I was given the opportunity to come here and lead the side as well and I am just stoked for the boys, they have done so well.” Glenn Maxwell, who scored 34 off 15 in the decider, was the player of the tournament.

Rangers in strong position with Doekhi

A crucial transfer claim has been made as Rangers plot their second signing of the January transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell, the Gers are in a ‘strong position’ to sign Vitesse Arnhem defender Danilho Doekhi on a pre-contract agreement this month.

His deal with the Eredivisie outfit expires in the summer and Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side are leading the interest in his services.

Fans will be buzzing

Rangers fans will surely be buzzing with this news, as it suggests that the club have a great chance of landing the centre-back at the end of the season. The Gers could be set to bring him in on a free transfer, which would be a coup for Ross Wilson as it would free up funds to strengthen in other areas instead of needing to splash out on a big transfer fee for a defensive signing.

James Sands has already joined the club on loan from New York City FC and this deal for Doekhi could be Van Bronckhorst’s second signing of the month, although he would need to wait until the summer to line up for the Scottish giants.

Last year, his current boss Thomas Letsch lauded his ability, saying: “Danilho is extremely important. He is one of the best center-backs of the Eredivisie.

“Of course there is more talk about Oussama Tannane, Riechedly Bazoer and the attacking players. But it is very important for the team that you are stable and prevent goals. Everyone is responsible for that, but Doekhi, Jacob Rasmussen and also Tomas Hajek do a super job.

“He already played fantastic last year and this season he has performed at the highest level in every game. Danilho makes almost no mistakes and is an absolute team player, a very calm player. flat developed. He coaches other players very well. He is calmer than other players and perhaps that makes him less noticeable, but he is the reserve captain for a reason.”

This highlights the Dutchman’s qualities as a defender and illustrates why Van Bronckhorst will be buzzing over this telling update from Campbell. The ex-Feyenoord coach will surely love to have a centre-back who makes ‘almost no mistakes’ and, at the age of 23, has potential to improve even further.

It is now over to Wilson to ensure that he can get a deal over the line for the defender in the coming weeks by pinning him down to a pre-contract agreement.

Andreas Skov Olsen could move to Rangers

Andreas Skov Olsen could join Rangers during the January transfer window, according to Bologna Sport News (via Ibrox News).

The lowdown

The 22-year-old, who is predominantly a right winger but can also play on the left, is currently with Serie A club Bologna.

The Denmark international is valued at £5.85m by Transfermarkt and Kasper Hjulmand called him up for last summer’s European Championship, substituting him on in their first two group matches. The Danes went on to reach the semi-finals, where they were beaten by England at Wembley.

The latest

The report from Bologna Sport News stated that Skov Olsen is ‘destined to leave’ the Italian club on loan this month, and Rangers are said to be competing with Serie A outfit Sampdoria for his signature.

The player will apparently decide ‘in the coming days’ where he wants to be playing his football during the second half of the campaign.

The verdict

Skov Olsen’s record for his former club FC Nordsjaelland was outstanding. He scored 27 goals and provided seven assists in 51 matches for the Danish outfit.

However, it’s fair to say that his career at Bologna has failed to ignite up to this point. In 69 appearances for the Rossoblu, he has only managed three goals and five assists, which probably explains why he’s available for a mid-season transfer.

Rangers will probably be more encouraged by his form for his country, with talent scout Jacek Kulig describing his performances in a Denmark shirt (11 goal contributions in 15 caps) as ‘simply amazing’. That sounds like a player who is worth pursuing.

Romano: Spurs close in on Amrabat

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the signing of Sofyan Amrabat this January transfer window…

What’s the word?

Italian journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano delivered a fresh update on Spurs’ pursuit of the Fiorentina midfielder, who is currently excelling for Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations, very early on Wednesday morning.

He said:

“Sofyan Amrabat to Tottenham, advanced but not a done deal yet. [Antonio] Conte and [Fabio] Paratici both want him – he’s also doing great at AFCON.

“But Spurs are waiting to complete [Tanguy] Ndombele deal [to Paris Saint-Germain] before Amrabat (loan with buy option). Player side, not a problem: he only wants Spurs.”

Closing in

At the moment, this would be the Lilywhites’ first signing this month as a swoop for Adama Traore continues to rumble on without much success.

It appears as if Conte’s attentions have quickly turned to sorting out the engine room because you don’t make the likes of Ndombele, Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso all available for an exit if you’re not going to try and reinforce such a key position, especially with less than five days of the window remaining.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-thfc-spurs-transfer-rumours-gossip-conte-paratici-levy-updates” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Amrabat isn’t a signing that is going to thrill much of the Spurs fanbase but if the Italian head coach wants him, then he must be backed.

The 25-year-old midfielder has been restricted to only 211 minutes in the Serie A this season but has featured in three full 90-minute games for his country in Group C and the round of 16 at AFCON.

Conte has lacked someone capable of driving the ball forward from midfield and he could well find that in Amrabat. Of the 39 players to have attempted 150 or more dribbles since the start of the 2019/20 campaign,  only one player (Ismael Bennacer, 79.6%) has managed a better dribble success rate than the Viola enforcer (70.3%), per WhoScored.

That is also above every single one of Spurs’ current central options with Oliver Skipp leading the way on 66.7% and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg not too far behind on 62.2%. Ndombele – who is supposed to be the ideal fit for the role – sits down at 55%, which is rather telling.

He is also solid at delivering long balls and is aggressive in the tackle, so whilst his lack of game time is a worry, there are certainly credentials there that make him fit for Conte, who must be absolutely delighted that a deal is very close. to happening.

Somewhat of a perfect signing for the Spurs boss, the north London outfit are in for one busy few days ahead of Monday’s deadline.

West Brom plot move for Elliot Anderson

West Bromwich Albion are one of several Championship clubs interested in securing the services of Newcastle United youngster Elliot Anderson on a loan deal next season.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to the latest reports from TEAMtalk, who claim that the 19-year-old’s performances on loan at Bristol Rovers have attracted interest from several Championship sides.

West Brom are among the quintet of second-tier clubs keen on the youngster, although, it will not be easy for the Baggies to tie this deal up – with the likes of Middlesborough, Coventry City, Reading and Stoke City all interested in signing the starlet.

Earlier reports also claim that Nottingham Forest, Queens Park Rangers and Preston North End are keeping tabs on the midfielder – making things even tougher from Albion’s perspective.

Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton understandably would like to keep Anderson if he can aid the club in securing promotion to League One, though it is understood that Eddie Howe wants the England U19 international to be playing Championship football next season.

Bruce’s goal-scoring solution

The £180k-rated talent has been a key player in the Pirates’ pursuit of promotion, with the 19-year-old establishing himself as a Rovers regular – finding himself in the starting XI 94% of the time.

Anderson, who has had manager Joey Barton waxing lyrical over his performances, has also notched up an impressive total of nine goal contributions in 18 appearances in League Two this season.

The attacking midfielder has since been described as a “superb” player who “gets you off your seat” by the Bristol Rovers boss:

“I think our fans have taken to him because he gets you off your seat. You would be really pleased for him to have the ball for ninety minutes because he’s got such quality.”

Steve Bruce would be right to move for Anderson who looks to be a supreme talent with his ability to score and create goals – something which could well solve the Baggies’ own scoring problems next season.
